English is often referred to as being a lingua franca, which is to say that it is an international

language, spoken by a wide variety of people. But, what has been the impact of such fact on
native English speakers?

First of all, it has become clear, in recent years that native English speakers have been
accommodating to the fact that English is spoken worldwide, which is to say that they expect
everyone to know the language and they look down on those who dont speak it correctly. In
fact, sometimes, they tend to disregard people who dont use the languages as well as they
should. Moreover, since English is considered an international language, native speakers feel
that they dont need to learn any other language, since they will be able to communicate
wherever they are.

However, this can be a mistake. In today society, most people can speak more than one
language and can switch between them on a regular basis. Therefore, if native English speakers
refuse to learn other languages, this could become a problem for them in the future. They might
find themselves being monolingual in a multilingual society, and, as a consequence, they might
be less prepared to face the challenges being put before them.

In conclusion, native English speakers must understand that, although their language is still
international, they must respect those who do not speak it and they must be open to learning
new languages.
