Learning Experience: Art and Sensory Activity- Paper Clay Exploration
Programming Purpose:

On a previous placement day I created an activity that used paper clay as a material. The
activity was highly structured and this made it difficult for the children to truly enjoy the
material and explore their ideas about what they could create with it. For a new activity I
would like to allow the children to create their own unique creations with the paper clay and
allow them to use the material and tools in an activity that is as open ended as possible.
Objective:
The children will:

1) Practice fine motor skills when using plastic sculpting tools to create textures, holes
and other shapes in the paper clay.
2) Practice social skills when discussing their ideas for their designs with their peers and
staff.
3) Explore sensory materials when working with the paper clay and exploring its scent,
texture, shape, temperature, colour, etc.
Materials:

Plastic Sculpting Tools

Paper Clay
Cleaning spray
Paper Towel
Set Up:

Planned Implementation

1. I will set out a small ball of paper clay in front of each chair at the classrooms arts and
crafts table.
2. I will set out a variety of plastic sculpting tools used for play dough and other clay
mediums.
3. I will set out paint and markers for the children to use to create their paper clay
creations.
4. I will travel around the table to ask the children questions about their creations and
write down their summaries of their pieces to be recorded by staff or myself.
5. I will also ask children questions about their pieces to open a discussion about their
creations. Questions to open discussion could include:
a. What are you creating with your clay? What gave your this idea?
b. I see youre making a _____, have you learned anything about this in school
so far?
6. After the children have completed their creations I will support them in writing their
names on their creations and placing them in a safe area to dry overnight.
7. I will clean up the table area using cleaning spray and paper towel.
Additional Emergent Use of Materials:

The children used the sculpting tools to create different facial expressions in their clay.

Some children created different animals that they were unable to create with the
limited amount of colours and clay we had during our previous activity.

Some children created teeth as one child in the classroom lost a tooth earlier in the
school day.
Learning Strategy #1
Questions

While the children are creating their paper clay creations I will use questions to promote
discussion among the students and to help students think about what they would like to create
with their clay. Examples of questions for this activity include:
I like the design youre making with your markers, can you find a pattern in the
design youve made?
The last time we used paper clay we made turtles is their another animal youd like to
create?
I see youre making some sphere shapes with your clay, what are you planning on
building with them?

Learning Strategy #2
Sensory Engagement

While the children explore the paper clay they can use their senses to explore the material and
to add different elements to their design such as colour. Examples of sensory uses for the
material include:

Using tools to create different textures in the paper clay.

Feeling t he texture and temperature of the paper clay using tactile senses.
Using markers and paint to create visually interesting designs using a variety of
colours.
