Learning Objectives: Success Criteria


By the end of the lesson, students are able to I will be successful if I can:
write a recount of a recently celebrated identify simple and compound sentences in the texts given
festival identify verbs in the present tense in the texts given
identify sequence connectors in the texts given
write and evaluate at least one simple sentence and one
compound sentence to describe a festival

9Duration Differentiation
STARTER
2 mins 1. Tr shares Learning Objectives and Success Criteria with the students.
5 mins 2. Ss are shown pictures of festivals on the slide, one at a time.
3. Ss are given 1 minute to write down as much information as they can
about each picture.
5 mins 4. Tr asks the students to use Stand and Share, students share their
responses. Each student who contributes must give something new.
2 mins 5. Tr collate all responses on the board for the class to see how they already
[14 mins] know.

MAIN ACTIVITIES
Activity 1 (Find Me a Partner) :
2 mins 1. Students display their groups Graphic Organiser around the room.
2. Each group selects two representatives to stay at their groups Graphic Organiser
2 mins to the visitors (strays) from other groups.
3. The other members will visit the other groups and listen to their presentation.
2 mins 4. Remind the visitors to give feedback (suggestions & questions) on Post it notes
8 mins and place the notes on the groups graphic organisers.
5. After the given time is up, call the students to return to their table group.
6. Ask the visitors to share findings from other groups Graphic Organiser.
7. Instruct the groups to read the feedback and improve on their Graphic
Organiser.
1. Ss are given a card with either the name of a festival or the activities
8 mins during the festival
2. Ss mix with each other to find the match to their card. They need to
match the festival with the activities while moving around in silence.
3mins 3. Ss are to form pairs and discuss their card content.
4. Ss are grouped according to their festival and try to arrange the sentences
into a paragraph correctly. Ss paste the cards on a poster sheet.
5. Ss are asked to return to their table groups.
6. Ss are to display the complete text for the 2 festivals.

8 mins 8. Tr shows a table to the students and instruct them to draw it in their
exercise books. Assessment for

from the text.
10. Ss write the sentences they have identified in the table.
11. Tr distribute a peer assessment checklist to each student.

3 mins Activity 2 [Allwrite Roundrobin (Kagan 2009)] :

3 mins 3. Students B,C and D continue the activity.
1. Tr asks the students to write the following table in their book.

2. Ss are given thinking time to complete the table on their own with one
festival.
3. Give one, take one:
i) Tr plays music and get students to mix around.
ii) Tr pause the music and instruct the studens to High Five and
pair up with the person nearest to them.
[16 mins] iii) Pairs share using the structure Give One, Take One:
- Partner A shares one festival, food and activity
- Partner B writes down what is shared.
5 mins - Partner A & B switch roles.
- Tr repeats this for 4 times.

Activity 3:
1. Show an example of a journal entry.
2. Get the students to write a journal entry recounting the celebration.
[20 mins] 3. Tr asks the students to be creative with their journal entry and may include
personal pictures of the festival they celebrated.

1. Tr instructs the students to return to their table groups. Ss compare the
information from the previous activity with their group members
2. Tr asks students to choose one festival.
3. Tr instruct the students to present the information they have gathered in
a graphic organiser.
4. Tr reminds the students to include two sections (suggestion / questions)
for peer feedback in their graphic organiser.

PLENARY
5 mins 1. Ss write the following on their exit slips: Exit Slip
-2 things that they have learnt
