Abstract. In this report, we studied about a properly functioning occupational health


& safety (OHS) system is necessary to ensure the long-term deployment and
productivity of the workforce of transportation, storage and logistic field. The OHS
system should prevent situations in which individuals suffer an injury or illness and are
forced to call in sick due to their work or working conditions. This is particularly
important because people will need to work for a longer period of their lives run.

We studied about roles of an engineer related to safety and health, comprehensive


literature review, diverse group of stakeholders, roles of OSHE, ethical behavior, and
moral issues and counter measure to solve problem of Air Asia Berhad.

The result of the studied that we got through Air Asia website page and Wikipedia that
give us more information about the topic that we researched. We put all together that
we archived in this report.

INTRODUCTION

AirAsia Berhad is part of the AirAsia Group, a world-famous low cost airline that
operates extensive networks both domestically and internationally. AirAsia pioneered
low cost airfares in Asia and is now currently the largest low fare, no-frills airline in
Asia. It is also one of the largest airlines in all of Asia in terms of passengers carried.
AirAsia has also been voted the Worlds Best Low Cost Airline in 2009 and 2010.
AirAsia Berhad is currently based in the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT), Kuala

Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Sepang. Its associate airline - AirAsiaX, is also
located at the LCCT and shares operational facilities with AirAsia Berhad.

ROLES OF AN ENGINEER RELATED TO SAFETY AND HEALTH

Every day, people (including ourselves) entrust their lives and their possessions
to our hand. Everyone in AirAsia plays a big role in creating a safe environment.
Creating a safety conscious environment means that we adhere to the rules and
regulations on how to manage people, follow the processes and maintaining
equipment safety to ensure everything as it should be. This also means that we also
make the necessary effort to learn on how to continuously improve the quality of
safety of ourselves as well as that of others in the company.

Engineers shall hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public. If
engineers' judgment is overruled under circumstances that endanger life or property,
they shall notify their employer or client and such other authority as may be
appropriate. Engineers shall not attempt to injure, maliciously or falsely, directly or
indirectly, the professional reputation, prospects, practice, or employment of other
engineers. Engineers who believe others are guilty of unethical or illegal practice shall
present such information to the proper authority for action. Engineers shall not permit
the use of their name or associate in business ventures with any person or firm that
they believe is engaged in fraudulent or dishonest enterprise.

Engineers shall not offer, give, solicit, or receive, either directly or indirectly, any
contribution to influence the award of a contract by public authority, or which may be
reasonably construed by the public as having the effect or intent of influencing the
awarding of a contract. They shall not offer any gift or other valuable consideration in
order to secure work. They shall not pay a commission, percentage, or brokerage fee
in order to secure work, except to a bona fide employee or bona fide established
commercial or marketing agencies retained by them.

COMPREHENSIVE LITERATURE REVIEW

The report is about the airline company in Asia which gives the air line services
to the passenger namely AirAsia airline. Air Asia company is established in 1993 and
firstly commenced operation on November 18, 1996. It was originally founded by a
government -owned conglomerate DRB-Hicom.

Asia's well reputed and leading airline established with the dream of building
flying possible for everyone. Since 2001, Air Asia has very rapidly broken the travel
norms around the world and has become the most leading and innovative airline in the
world. Air Asia also invited the low-cost aviation through our innovation solution.
With a route network that spans through more than 20 countries and it continues to
cover the way for low cost aviation, efficient processes and an obsessive approach to
business. Air Asia is set to take low cost flying to an all new high with our believe.

Air Asia operate with the world's lowest unit cost of US$0.023/ASK and the
passenger breakeven load factor of 52% and world fastest growing airline in the world.
It has hedge 100% of its fuel requirement for the next three year. Achieve an aircraft
turnaround time of 25 minutes has a crew productivity level that is triple and achieve
an average aircraft utilization rate of 13 hours a day.

Air Asia focuses on different major issue first, it is partnering with the world's
most renowned maintenance providers and to comply with world airline operation to
guarantee the passengers safety. Second, implementing the regions fastest turnaround
time at only 25 minutes, to assure lower costs and higher productivity. Third, low fare
without compromising on quality and services. Fourth, streamline operation and lean
distribution system. Fifth, applying the point-to-point network to keep operations
simple and low costs.

Air Asia keeps improving their supportive and their constructive management,
and also has won many awards and recognitions in 2008 and 2009. The recent award
of the Air Asia is the best airline of the year by Center Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA),
best Asia low-cost carrier by TTG Travel Awards 2009, and world more best low-cost
airline by Skytrax.

Focusing on the low cost, long haul segment -AirAsia X was established in 2007
to provide high-frequency and point-to-point networks to the long-haul business.
AirAsia X efficient and reliable operation are fully licensed and monitored by
Malaysian and international regulators. AirAsia X-tra ordinary in fight and service
experience to all our guests, spreading the amazing AirAsia experience to exciting
destination in Australia, China, India, Middle East and Europe.

Their vision, under the slogan "Now Everyone Can Fly", is "To be the largest low
cost airline in Asia and serving the 3 billion people who are currently underserved
with poor connectivity and high fares.

Their mission is, under the banner of 'Affordable Airfares', "To attain the lowest
cost so that everyone can fly with AirAsia," without any compromise to Flight Safety
Standards, as well as, creating a worldwide recognizable brand with a 'family'
atmosphere within working conditions for employees. AirAsia's mission statement is
to be the "Asia leading low fare no frills airline and first to introduce "ticketless"
traveling, Air Asia will be unveiling more incentives in the future to encourage more
air travel among Malaysians." Now everyone can fly clearly describes AirAsia's value.
Cost advantages created by Air Asia through operational effectiveness and efficiency
go directly to the customers. The customer now enjoy much more surplus than before
as the fare falls dramatically and Air Asia captures some of the dead weight losses by
capturing segments of customers that previously cannot afford the airlines' fare.

ROLES OF OSHE

The main objective of this act is to foster the commitment of employers and also
employees upon occupational, safety and health.

Therefore, the enforcement of this act is one of the Governments efforts to curb
events accidents and occupational disease in the country is increasing over the last
few years. This act enacted is complement the law of Occupational, Safety and
Health already existing, such as Factories and Machinery Act 1967 (Act 139) and it
has been enhance legal requirements relating to Occupational, Safety and Health by
creating a system of enforcement based on combination of the provisions of the act,
regulations and code of practice-industry, code of practice provided through the
cooperation of government, employers and workers.

In accordance with the provisions in this act, the primary responsibility to ensure
the safety and health at workplace is located at those who work with the risks. As
such, the main groups in the workplace who have the duty of general under this act
are the employer. Those who self-employed and employees as well as those who
design, manufacture import and supply of equipment and materials used in the
workplace.

This act has outlined a number of steps to be taken by the employer, to the extent
practicable, to protect Health, Safety and welfare of those who work with them.
Among them are hold and maintain plant and systems of work that are secure,
organize measures to ensure the safety and health in the use, handling, storage and
transportation of plants and materials, providing information, instruction, training and
supervision necessary to ensure the safety and health its employees, ensure the work
promises, as well as the entrance and it is safe and without risk to the health of its
employees, as well as to prepare and maintain a safe work environment and healthy
for its employees.

In addition to the general duties, the employer is also required to provide a


written statement about the policies, organization and order of stop to safeguard the
safety and health at work as well as required to disseminate the policies the employees.
A part from the occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (Act 514) and Factories and

Machinery Act 1967 (Act 139), other acts related to the duties and responsibilities of
the environmental unit, Occupational Health Safety (OSHE) is the environment Act
1974 (Act 127), the fire services Act 1988 (Act 3410, Poison Act 1952 (Act 366), the
electricity supply Act 1990 (Act 447) and other.

ETHICAL BEHAVIOUR

At AirAsia, we obey all applicable laws and regulations, both in letter and in
spirit. We treat all stakeholders our shareholders, guests, suppliers, employees and
the community around us with respect.

We believe all our employees, directors, agents and representatives must share
and pursue the same beliefs. We cannot be part of AirAsia if we are not prepared to
follow the same standards, or if we breach any of these conditions. We have specific
policies with more details in the respective areas. Please check them up.

Whats important then? These are important:

1)That we do our business fairly, impartially, ethically, and with the

utmost regard to safety.

2)That we obey all applicable laws and regulations.

3)That integrity be the basis of all our relationships whether with guests, suppliers
communities and with each other.

4)That we respect the environment and are aware of, and minimize our impact on
it.

5)That we do not do anything that may raise questions about AirAsias honesty,
impartiality, reputation or ability to conduct its business.

And that we do not get other parties to carry out any tasks prohibited under
AirAsias policies and practices and Terms & Conditions of employment.

MORAL ISSUES AND COUNTER MEASURE TO SOLVE PROBLEMS

Issues of corruption and bribery

We do not offer or accept illegal or inappropriate gifts or money or other things


of value to get business or personal advantage to ourselves or others. And we do not
use middlemen to do what we know either is a corrupt practice, or something that
could be interpreted as one.

pay, paying, promising to pay, or authorizing the payment of money or anything of
value to anyone in order to influence any act or decision or to secure any other
improper advantage in order to obtain or retain business.

Disclosure of information

AirAsias reporting shall in all material respects, comply with applicable laws
and regulations; and be full, fair, accurate, timely and easily understood.

If we are involved in AirAsias disclosure process we must be familiar and


comply with AirAsias disclosure controls and procedures and internal controls over
financial reporting, to the extent relevant to our responsibility, so that AirAsias
public reports and documents filed with the relevant authorities and other public
communications comply in all material respects with applicable laws and regulations.

We must also prevent access to such information and/or unauthorized disclosure


before it has been received by the stock exchange and released by them (or before the
information ceases to become sensitive).

Harassment and intimidation are unacceptable and wrong

Harassment and intimidation (such as verbal and physical abuse, racist or sexist
remarks, unwelcome sexual advances or inappropriate sexual contact,
sexually-oriented gestures, pictures, jokes, remarks) are ugly and wrong and often
make the workplace a very unpleasant place to be in. Basically, any conduct that is

unwelcome or unreciprocated by the other person could be deemed as harassment and


intimidation. We would not be part of it, and will not tolerate it.

Money laundering is illegal and dangerous

Money laundering is when people use legal means to convert illegal money into
legal money. We must prevent money laundering in AirAsia. It is illegal, dangerous
and could have a very serious impact on AirAsia, its directors and officers as well as
negative repercussions far beyond AirAsia. We must also prevent AirAsia from being
used by others for this purpose.

Political activity

Political activities are okay but only if done outside of AirAsia, and in our own
time and not in the capacity of an AirAsia staff. AirAsia does not give support to
political parties, either through direct financial support or paid working time. And you
shall not let your involvement in such political activities create issues or
embarrassment to AirAsia.

CONCLUSION

As a conclusion, the Guidelines on Occupational Safety and Health in Courier


Services Industry provide information and recommendations on the management of
Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) in the Courier Services industry in compliance
with Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994, Act 514. Employers are required to
read these guidelines in conjunction with the Occupational Safety and Health Act
1994, Act 514 in order to fulfill the relevant requirements in a comprehensive
approach and integrated manner.

Employers and employees must understand the rationale and the importance of
managing risks at their workplace. This will minimize or help eliminate occupational
illnesses due to hazards associated with courier activities such as road accidents.
Having read and gain general knowledge in safety and health also aim to promote a
safer and healthier workplace for employees and to reduce work-related illnesses and
hazards as employees health is directly linked to organizational productivity.

Thus, comments and suggestions from those in the courier services industry such
as Safety and Health officers, Safety and Health Committees of courier companies,
occupational health doctors, employers, employees and others concerned, are
important for future reference and guidance for a better and safer workplace.
