PREFACE

For you always have the poor with you, and you can show kindness to them whenever you
wish; but you will not always have me (Mark 14:7)

I pondered on writing this story and for which reasons made sense. My rst
thoughts were to put in words the facts of a story that involved, in our opinion
and the opinion of many others-a total misuse of power by some governmental
entities and one particular insurance company. This story is about the Marvaso
family of Westland, Michigan who had a business of twenty years that burned
down on May 8th, 2013. I wanted to put facts in writing so someone in the media
might tell the story and or someone with power and authority might be bold
enough to take measures to right this injustice that you are about to hear. The
losses are extremely signicant both emotionally and nancially, that extend to
even include the loss of life. The collateral damages go far beyond our family
which may astound you considering what would be gained and by whom. As I
thought to myself, Why are you really writing this story? . Is it because you
want this to be an open conversation that might lead to awareness of insurance
companies that do business with poor integrity that operate for their own bottom
line performance? Is it because this story might also question the practice of
government leaders that may have misused their powers which seems to be ever
present in the news today? But, as I thought a little deeper I said to myself There
is more that you can do with this story---and its your responsibility to do so.
The story will be told in its entirety so you the reader will be able to create your
own opinion that if the young reman who died and the business of total loss
could have been saved, and was there a cover up?

FORWARD
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are
created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with
certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty
and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights,
Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just
powers from the consent of the governed. [The Declaration
of Independence]
For Americans, if not for all humanity, these words remain the
consummate statement of hope and at times a call to arms. Though the title of the
document says independence, its principles cannot exist without interdependence.
Though pursuit of happiness is deemed an unalienable right, it is not always
accompanied by a guaranteed successful outcome. Above all, The Declaration is a
statement of faith, in the possibility that we all work and live on a level playing eld,
that each person who brings their best has some chance of success.
While The United States of America is touted as the land of opportunity and has
more than its share of success stories, we sometimes gloss over the struggles that
precede the celebrated outcome. George Marvasos story is one of hope in the
American dream, a sometimes betrayed trust in governmental systems that can be
too political, a relentless optimism, a deep seeded belief that if you keep doing the
right thing for the right reasons good will result and nally an unfailing trust in God
that transcends even the darkest times.
I have known George and his family as pastor and friend for nearly a quarter of a
century. Over the years I have been privileged to celebrate their successes and
challenges. When things were going well, I have known George to be generous,
considerate and deeply concerned for the wellbeing of anyone he met. When met
with devastating downturns, he still extended himself to the best of his ability without
complaint, despair, loss of hope or loss of his dream for a brighter future for his
family and the public he hopes to serve. Finally, when times are at their worst,
there is always faith. George possesses an unwavering faith in God and a tenacious
condence in the America of possibilities.
In this book I expect you will come to know George as I have. You will have an
opportunity to join a quiet hero in the middle of his quest and to really know what
was on his mind and in his heart while the dragons were being confronted. It is my
hope that each reader will come to a time when we can collectively say We knew
him when, we shared in his struggles before we knew the outcome, we joined in the
adventure before it was complete and before anyone could know the conclusion.
Finally, we are called to witness a contest, a sometimes -not so civil- war between an
ordinary American citizen and a system now too often stacked against the little guy.
We are again invited to witness a test to determine if a nation conceived in liberty
and dedicated to the equality of all people can continue to endure.

DECEMBER 13, 2013-LITTLE MORE THAN TWO WEEKS FROM THE FAMILIES VOLUNTARY INTERVIEW WITH
THE MICHIGAN STATE POLICE:
The me was 7:30 A.M. early on a cold winters morn. Actually it was twelve days before Christmas and
the raid which was made up of an es mated 24 Michigan State Police Officers and Detec ves assembled
this well thought out plan. There were three homes to be raided which were located in three separate
suburbs of the Detroit Metro area. Warrants were pulled for the suspects that involved the en re Marvaso
family. The pre planning must have been early in the wee hours of the morning because they arrived in
mely fashion, split up in groups of approximately eight officers per home which was 7:30 A.M. in Novi,
7:30 A.M. Westland and 7:20 A.M. in Wayne, Michigan. They swooped in, in Hollywood fashion as the
hard pounding on the doors echoed throughout the homes saying Open up its the state police-we have
warrants. The homes were surrounded both inside and outside.

Mary and I were told to be seated at the dining room table un l the search was complete while one
officer stood with us as to guard our every move. Not having a police record of any kind and being of the
ages 67 and 71 Mary and I decided not to make a run for it. A rela vely small condo they swept through
the upstairs, and the downstairs with a fine tooth comb. By the me they le , no stone was unturned other
than the food and clothes we had. They took all keys that belonged to anything including the garage.
They took all computers, all phones, photos of business or family and any business records of any kind.
I had a blueprint of the two businesses that burned down taped to the living room wall. The detec ves
asked me what it was and I told them. Our plan is to rebuild. We had been watching Joel Osteen on a
Sunday morning of which he said if you have a dream post a reminder on the wall so you can be reminded
everyday. Before they le I approached the two lead detec ves and said I cannot fathom one piece of
informa on that you have pre fire-while the fire was happening, or post fire that would warrant you to
come to our house. They looked at me and said nothing in return. Mary asked the officers the ques on
Why is the Westland Fire Department inves ga ng their own fire? The officers responded Thats what
we would like to know. (Thats like Iran doing their own inspec ons).

The descrip on of how the raid was handled was consistent to that of Mary and Georges. Retrieving
and taking similar type items that also included the phone of a ten year old child. Computers, lap tops,
photos and photo chips for many personal family pictures were taken as well. Officers surrounded the
exterior of the home of which several neighbors came by later saying What the heck is going on? Is there

a murder or something? The responsibility of explaining the raids to so many became demanding as the
News on T.V. said Warrants had been served.
LOCATION #3 WAYNE, MICHIGAN 7:20 A.M.

This search was similar to the other two loca ons that also included autos being searched as were also
done at the first two residences as well.
The state police said they would return our belongings in around two weeks from the me they
confiscated them. It is now over two years and we s ll have not go en all of our possessions returned.
Le ers to Col Etue the Director of the Michigan State Police was helpful to get some items returned from
me to me but, two weeks versus two years? There are computers and items taken from the fire site as
well that have not been returned. When we have requested that our possessions be returned the answer
is always There is s ll an inves ga on going on
Once again the date of the fire was May 8, 2013. For the first six months post fire there were three
fire inves ga ng en es that handed in their final reports of the fire and they all read the same-NO
ACCELERANTS -NOT OF HUMAN CAUSE-NOT ARSON. Those three en es include the Westland Fire
Department, Herndon and Associates of Michigan and Engineering and Fire Inves gators Global Inc. In an
a empt to get our insurance company to pay off I had called almost anyone and everybody of importance
on the fire to see what it would take to get our insurance company to pay off. A par al list of who I made
contact with was Mayor Bill Wild, Fire and Police Chiefs of Westland, The Prime One Insurance Company,
Poli cal contacts, and the Detec ve in charge of the Michigan State Police-Sgt. Sunshine Ponze . I had
made every a empt to get help and offered help to assist with the inves ga on because the insurance
company was not being coopera ve with what they owed us by law. Fast forward to mid-November
of 2013 when I get a call from Sgt. Ponze and she said George do you know that the Westland Fire
Department changed the finding of the fire to be arson? My response was a very much befuddled What?
NOT ARSON was the SAME ANSWER we got every me we sat down with Capt. John Adams of the
Westland fire Department. We had been given the Westland eight page fire report that 100% absolutely
confers with Herndon and EFI. What is extremely important to note and REMEMBER is that both Herndon
and EFI, who are both world class fire inves gators; say they s ll maintain their original status and
conclusion today that the fire was 1. No accelerants 2. Not of human cause and 3. Undetermined. 4. Not
Arson
A er telling Sgt. Ponze that made no sense at all I asked, What do you need from us? She asked
Are you and Mary willing to come down to the police sta on and sit through an interview and possibly
make a statement. I said For sure. She then asked Can you bring the whole family Again I agreed. I
had insisted on doing this as soon as possible. She said You sure you want to do this that quick I replied
Yes, thinking that this insurance company had cost us six months of valuable me in which to rebuild
already. We were asked if we needed an a orney and the answer was No-what for? I remember the day
as clear as if it was yesterday. It was a Tuesday two days before Thanksgiving. The days when families
are home preparing for my second most favorite holiday-a day to get your family fix on. When we got

there we were greeted by a news reporter for Channel 4 News a Mr. Shawn Ley. Shawn was very nice
as he always has been and when we approached Shawn asked Do you want to make a comment. We
have dealt with Shawn on a couple of other stories and he is so professional but, at the same me we said
Comment for what?
Following a series of ques ons by the police that lasted a good length of me, and offering any piece of
informa on we could---we were asked that if we came up with anything we felt was important to let them
know of it. We were also asked if we would be willing to take a polygraph test of which we agreed. They
asked Will you want an a orney? and we answered No. It should be noted that a er leaving there
we were advised to get an a orney and so we did. The a orney told us not to take the polygraph test-so
we declined to take the test. Eventually our en re family did take the polygraphs and the details of that
ordeal will be explained in a chapter to follow. The date of the raids came two and half weeks a er the
interviews. The raid was illegal, unjust and costly.

IN THE BEGINNING
Once again this story is not meant to be a story of the life and mes of the Marvaso family. Nor should
it be construed in any way to be a business venture story. The reasons for the story have been previously
men oned with hope that these wri ngs will accomplish the three main topics that it is intended for.
Mary and I met at a wedding in the year 1966. Seven months later we were walking down the aisle.
With Marys father being an Italian immigrant and possessing a mafia type accent who killed pigs in
basements for supper, I felt the need to say I do rather quickly. Mary happened to take her shoes off
while we were relaxing having a picnic and ea ng some of her lasagna when I no ced that she had
purple colored feet. I thought to myself she must be squashing grapes while her father beheaded the
pig? I had no problem with that but, one foot was a darker shade purple than the other. I thought to
myself Maybe this chick is lazy on one side? 49 years later, I dont mind if I say so myself-I was right!
But, with the four children and fourteen grandchildren that she gave me- it is clear why she s ll makes
my heart go pi er pa er.
We moved to Westland, Michigan in 1967 of which was the same year as the birth of that city. We had
a very low profile life style but, it was an extremely happy life always surrounded by great neighbors.
Proud to be Westlanders, blessed to be Americans. In 1989 while si ng at a desk at my work I had
an epiphany come over me. I sat there and engaged in this most wonderful and confident feeling that
came over me while at the same me the words went through my head saying Leave today; there is
something more important for you to do. Four years later on July 21, 1993 the Electric S ck Billiard
Club had its grand opening.

The following four pages are a copy of a story I was asked to write in 1994 by S.C.O.R.E Chapter 18
of Detroit, Michigan. The request came a li le more than a year a er the Electric S ck opened for
business. The second half of the story will conclude in another chapter to come with all necessary facts
needed to be told.

ALIVE IN THE 90S - THE AMERICAN DREAM AND MY GOOD SHEPPARD
In America dreams can and do come true! If this story of one familys business venture can convince
just one other person to pick up on the formula and build their own dream then let it be wri en.
Would you call it a dream or a miracle if a man (age 47) and family were to build an up-scale billiard
center, restaurant and lounge with project cost of almost a half a million dollars star ng with absolutely
nothing? Nothing means no experience, no money, and no assets.
The formula is no secret! My shortened version of it is FAITH + HONESTY + THE ABILITY TO NEVER
QUIT, un l you have achieved your goal. It has been talked about many mes but, only a few get the
feel of it and use it.
The thought occurred approximately three years before the grand opening. At that me George and
Mary Marvaso of Westland, Michigan worked in the ham processing business for several years. George
in management and Mary was a quality control inspector. Involved in religion as much as one family can
transform itself to be-George had this most mysterious and comfortable feeling while si ng at a desk
one day. This feeling le me with the most posi ve feeling and the words came into my head Leave
today-there is something more important for you to do. Although I was 1000% sure I was going to
leave the job that day, it took two months to depart. I le a job that had me responsible for nearly 250
employees with salary and full benefits. Mind you I walked out with no money and no experience but,
I did have more faith than Donald Trump has money. Now as this story unfolds faith must be tested
for faith to exist.
Not knowing what to venture in a daughter suggested pool. She said pocket billiards had taken a
huge image change and became a night out rather than a hangout, like going to the movies. I was told
that any me a product comes in demand the compe on will surely grow. With that being in mind we
decided to stretch efforts and come up with the very best product we could.
Now any me you build something you make a plan, and that planning be er be complete. Reading
self-help books (Think and Grow Rich-by Napoleon Hill and Personal Power by Anthony Robbins-both a
must). Seeking knowledge from S.C.O.R.E. (Mr. Ed Cesarone), pool hall owners, and other businessmen
was a great way to gain knowledge. Traveling to billiard conven ons with seminars just for this product
was helpful. A complete business plan is the only way to succeed-Knowledge is Power- Right! The only
way you can get people or an ins tu on to invest in a project this size, (especially with our creden als)
is to convince them they will get repaid.
TEST NUMBER ONE----LOCATION---LOCATION---LOCATION! First: A try in a northwest suburb. I was
asked to show our plan to the townspeople and explain our inten ons. I showed up with drawings,
construc on materials and posi ve newspapers ar cles. I could not convince the people of the image
change that had been going around the country. This was a scary looking group. It had those ladies that
look over their half-moon glasses at you. I could have sworn one had a pitch fork lying on her lap. They
were very tough and basically said Pack you bag and hit the road Jack. But, they had such li le luck in
affec ng my spirit, I did just that walked off like John Wayne did in Rio Bravo. For a moment I felt so much
like John I thought I heard my spurs clinging. In fact I did even use the key to start my car when leaving. I
just shut the car door and said Giddyup and my Lincoln said Hee Hee.

A er looking at several loca ons I had no inten on of choosing a secondary loca on. Our present
loca on at 6581 n Wayne Road, Westland, Michigan has 38,000 cars per day traveling on Wayne road.
There are approximately 300,000 residents in a five mile ring and a quarter mile south of the large
Westland Mall. The landlord of our mall did not want to do business with us because we had no track
record. He said your financial records show you have nothing, you have never built anything before and
worse than that you have never operated any of the three businesses you propose. He said I have no
inten ons of cleaning up a beginners mess. A er four months of le ers and visits to his office on so
many early mornings he said lets do it. I think he realized-consciously or subconsciously the part of
the formula previously men oned DONT EVER QUIT. Although Mr. Sills agreed to do a deal he said the
people he gets his informa on from said the city will never let a liquor license go.
With a tenta ve signed lease its off to the city for approvals. With plenty of pre-planning and
materials the planning department comes first. Applica on to planning department was a success as
the vo ng resulted in a unanimous approval. With that being finished it is me to move on to the City
Council which makes the final decision.
TEST NUMBER TWO: Oh I know you have guessed it already---city council denies approval with a vote
of 3 for and 4 against. Reasons for denial, road traffic, parking, and not being suitable for that mall. Our
neighbors on the way out said What are you going to do now-just let this lie. We said first we are going
to find out what is right and wrong. If we are wrong we will leave and con nue on at another loca on
but, if we are right we will have found our site to build on. Odd thing is the city council approved another
billiard center site just one month earlier with the award of a free beer and wine license. There were too
many discrepancies. We were asked to postpone our council mee ng because the agenda was too full.
A er checking the records-the mee ng we were asked to postpone was the lightest in the last several
months. We were told by a prominent businessman that the owner of the other pool hall was a
prominent businessman with plenty of poli cal pull and maybe he does not want the compe on. You
cant spend a lot of me worrying about other people but, it did make you wonder. Being compa ble
to the mall was easy to explain. We provided the council with many other billiard centers in malls with
le ers from tenants in those malls saying they were not having problems. Records show that the other
billiard center just approved was six short on parking from the city code. Our center had 20 addi onal
spaces from code and we would have the benefit of open spaces in the evening when other tenants
would close. Traffic should have never been men oned. You cannot leave lease space empty when the
mall had been approved for the exis ng traffic and there had been no change in such traffic since. The
Detroit News reporter, named Said Deep helped, by making phone calls and willingness to write an
ar cle. A combina on of two ar cles from the Westland Observer, le ers and phone calls to the city
council convinced them to give a closed door mee ng. We showed up at the mee ng with the a orney
from Thomas Hearns the boxer-Brian Sullivan (now a judge in downtown Detroit. Brian did his job!
Once he slammed his hand down on the table and said Now tell my why my client cant do business
in this city?
We ended up with an approval but, the city would not give us the liquor license they had. They said they
were saving it in case they got a large hotel---ya right?
The license cost us 12,000 on the open market but, we were OK with that. A er opening, the business

and service from the police and fire department have been wonderful.
The financing was the final and toughest test of all. We obtained 100,000 in credit cards and addi onal
80,000 from family and friends. We sought as much help from businesses wan ng to do business offering
financing for their service and products. To complete the project we sought help from a local millionaire
businessman plus an applica on for a direct loan to the S.B.A... Vietnam Era Veteran funds were avail-
able. The businessman I previously men oned loved the plan but, he wanted to be a 50% partner. A er
telling him over and over we wanted to do this for our family alone-he said alright and Ill s ll sell you the
restaurant equipment with financing. At the same me the applica on for the S.B.A. seems to be in order
(applied to before the city council). The S.B.A. said we will hold considera on un l you get the liquor
license because the numbers relied too heavily on the license. Five months later we showed up with the
liquor license. While we were wai ng the S.B.A. approval we started construc on. That was not a wise
decision on my part because a er using up all of the funds the S.B.A. loan got denied because I did not
have enough ac ve service dates for the Vietnam Era Veterans loan. An a empt to get produc on going
again we went to the businessman who pledged help. When we got there he had a fast talking
accountant who said your dream can s ll come true but, Mr. Franco insists on being a 50% partner-his
only plan all along. Note: My S.C.O.R.E. officer told me about this man a long me ago and that I should
be aware of him. I am a pre y strong guy at mes but, I must admit this brought some tears to my
eyes. I just walked away taking full responsibility. That mee ng along with the news about the S.B.A.
loan not qualifying I just walked off with my head hanging down. Not like John Wayne and there were
no sounds of spurs in the air.
There I stood with all we had used up in construc on and a signed five year lease. You think the
Australians are down under? We were down under the under.
My S.B.A. loan contact (Mr. Larry Davis) made me feel this as only like a standing 8 count. He said get
yourself a bank to par cipate and this might pass under the guarantee program. I told him I had already
tried 7 or 8 banks with no luck. I cant tell you how many mes I had been told Youll never get a bank to
go for it banks dont want first me starters.
Back to the sidewalks and a er other 5 or 6 banks I met a man named Phil Toth, President of North
Atlan c Vending. He spends two hours with me a complete stranger-and makes a phone call. He calls the
First Independence Bank of Detroit located in Downtown Detroit. It is undoubtedly the greatest bank in
America. Without this bank-the S.B.A and S.C.O.R.E. we would not be standing today. Ill never forget the
day Felicia (the bank loan officer) said George, we are going to take this to the S.B.A. for loan approval.
I felt like a five year old child on Christmas Eve. As I le the building I think I floated across Griswold
Ave. because my feet were moving but, I couldnt feel the pavement. ELECTRIC STICK BILLIARD CLUB was
established July 21, 1993 by the Marvaso Family of Westland. The business employees 25 people and will
gross a li le less than a million dollars the first year of business.

This is the end of the beginning. The me is somewhere near the end of year 1994. The business
could not have go en off to a be er start paying off its debt on me and even early pay off came to
some investors.

THE FIRE
On May 8, 2013 there was a fire in Westland, Michigan at the Electric S ck Entertainment Center
and Marvasos Italian Grille. Within hours there was complete destruc on of a business of 20 years.
Smolderings and ashes lay dormant as the hard work and dreams of a place with so many employees,
friends and rela onships just vanish in midair. But, most important by far-was the loss of a life. The
failed efforts to save a young fireman whose future was cut short lays heavy on the minds of many with
prayers that ring out for what reason does this type of nightmare happen in life?
The alarm company called our residence at around 8:15 a.m. that morning. The dispatcher said
George your alarm is going off I asked Where in the building is the signal. She said There are
mul ple alarms going off. Do you want me to call the police? I replied Please do Ill be leaving for the
business right away. Mary arrived at the site before me so she called my cell phone and said George
our business is on fire. There were many fire engines there from a mul tude of surrounding suburbs.
There were T.V. news sta ons there doing reports for several days. The story has been revisited in the
news which also included every anniversary on the 8th of May each year and we are now going on
three years since the fire.
The business was a total loss. We are of 100 percent certainty that the fire department was down
and depressed almost as much as anyone. For sure with the loss of one of their own what could be
worse? And to add to that, the loss of a business that was so very close to the fire department staff itself.
The fact of how close the rela onship of the Marvasos business and to what mys cal sense it was will
present the ques on How did we get to where we are today a er understanding the fairytale that will
be told in the chapters to follow?

THE STORY OF THE BUSINESS
THE STORY OF THE BUSINESS IS TRULY A WONDER. When you consider it was just a pool hall. Yes,
there was an Italian restaurant added later on down the road plus a charity poker room was installed
over the last few years before the fire but, for all intense and purposes lets say It was just a pool hall.
The purpose of that request is just to create in the clearest fashion the mystery of the business and the
magnitude of its results. A previous chapter had the business current un l the end of 1994 that brought
in- in my opinion results that were spiritual. Once you have finished this chapter- you the reader- decide
for yourself. The accolades and the rela onships that were made far exceeded good luck and or are due
to the results of our efforts. Especially when you consider that our experience level was non-existent. The
good future allowed us to pay off the en re debt to investors rather quickly. In the following outline form
I will complete the list of business references and events that occurred of which I apologize due to the fact
that some have already been men oned:

The purpose of providing the accomplishments and happenings of the business is not in any way, by
any thoughts of imagina on to boast. We have all along maintained this business and its purpose was a
God sent. The story of the business and its rela onship to the community will stretch the imagina on to
wonder just how the events of the fire inves ga on and how it was handled could ever be allowed by any
person, leader or any organiza on with the slightest bit of a moral compass.
One of the kindest and consoling things anyone has ever said to me happened two days a er the fire
by an employee named Dan Mahan. Dan was a bar back/waiter kind of Ill do whatever you need to
get the job done employee. I can s ll remember ge ng out of my car at a residence home a day a er
the fire when Dan put out his hand and said That business you built a er a short pause looking me
straight in the eyes That family you built.
From where we le off with the business story from chapter two, late 1994, all of the business and
life itself was just grand and could not have been be er. We had an ini al surge of the need to enjoy the
fruits of our labor. We helped the children just a li le to ge ng into new homes. Christmas me became
so special with employee holiday par es and when possible there were some small bonuses. Immediately
following the employees Christmas party it became our family gi opening me. There were two large
fire places in the Electric S ck which set the mood right next to food setup supplied by the ladies and
the staff both. A large commercial music machine came in handy providing the best of Christmas Carols
which set the mood to reflect on what the real meaning of Christmas is all about. With this new found
success that had never been known before came the Christmas gi s. Only now we could afford bigger
and nicer gi s which brought so many smiles and good mes. The gi sharing me ended with a toss of
dollar bills in the air that had the kids scrambling every which way. A li le sadis c of me watching them
scramble even if it caused a bump on a knee or two but, so much fun.
Timing worked out for us with a good economy and the fact that billiards had become a na onal
crave. Like so many other Americans with a streak of luck -it was me to give back. First it was off
to help with the nonprofits. Annual events and contribu ons to groups such as Westland Community
Founda on, Westland Lions, Rotary, Goodfellows, Civitans were just a few. Going to all of the poli cal
fundraisers, golf ou ngs and sharing with the police, fire, schools was now not only affordable but,
extremely gra fying. Let me say with full clarity and gratefulness that the business brought back to us

from these en es came in tenfold. Allowing the nonprofits to do what they do best seemed the best way
to be produc ve in our giving back. But, we did create some ideas of our own of which one was the Free
Church Youth Group par es. We sent out mailers to any type church as long as they believed in God and
donated par es that consisted of pool, pizza, so drinks, salads, and the quarters to play the darts and
video games. We also provided funds for and did the construc on for the game room at the Westland
Senior Center which put a lot of smiles on the seniors of Westland.
The business did well from 1994 to the mid 2000s. We added Marvasos Italian Grille in August
of 2003. The theory behind Marvasos was to retain the overflow of customers on a wai ng list at
The Electric S ck. Simultaneously while running these two businesses there was another concept in the
works. This dream of mine was very aggressive, especially for who we were at the me. This project
has an es mated budget of $150,000,000 consis ng of retail, entertainment and restaurants-geared for
families without gambling! Its been done before right? Right! My plan is to make it BIG, extremely
glitzy and glamorous with an element of authen city to just straight call out for the people to come and
see it. We had spent somewhere close to $500,000 in concept, design and predevelopment that I am
slightly embarrassed to say. But, I am not one to look back and cry over spilt milk. I believe no ma er
how much crea ve talent and passion one may have been fortunate enough to be blessed with it is s ll
Gods plan. With that being said He also intends to bump you around with some heavy bruising to see
if youre a believer or a qui er. Really, it is for sure--a test of faith. This larger visionary concept is
named America Domani. It made the headlines on local papers several me and also a racted two
billionaires (Dick DeVos-Amyway fame and Heinz Prechter-the automobile sunroof). Mr. Dick DeVos Jr.,
who was kind enough to come to our li le humble business a er his run for the governorship for the
State of Michigan. He kept his word in saying he would come to see the project. When he first walked
through the door I started to cry- pre y hard actually. He came over to me at that me and said I told
you I was coming. Dick made us feel like were on the same playing field and that if he was no higher
up the ladder of social stra fica on. We had lunch, viewed the blueprints and discussed the plan. Dick
made no promise but, his words le a strong indica on of hope. He called me a couple of months later
saying George, I am coming down to see where you are at the new project. He came down like he said
he would and again it was great. He also invited me up to his office in Grand Rapids and we discussed
progress at that me. Domani never got good trac on due to my inability to let the original business be
handled by my family. The Great Recession had something to do with it but, in fact it was My Bad.
Somewhere in the mid 2000s there came along the Great Recession. Around that same me
people had slowed down on shoo ng pool. There we stood with a dying concept, an Italian restaurant,
and me the biggest dreamer since Christopher Columbus. We were proud of the Italian restaurant that
has provided so many good memories but, its loca on was wrong. The demographics for the City of
Westland remain fair at best plus the mall was not kept up very well. In my opinion, neither the economic
down turn nor the fact that shoo ng pool slowed down should be an excuse.
We entered into bankruptcy more than once. People who believed in us loaned us money and many
got hurt. From 2006 to 2010 I s ll dont know how we ever survived. There was a small debt that allowed
a debtor to obtain receivership which provided them the right to take control of the business for a
week. Our a orney said we would need to go into a chapter 11 to make them leave-so we did. Shortly

therea er we withdrew the chapter 11. There was another incident when the u li es shut us down for
a week and one other me the landlord came within 24 hours of shu ng the doors. The me with the
landlord brought an angel friend named Cathryn Neracher who bailed us out with a last hour loan of
$15,000. Today Cathryn who is a beau ful lady with a business called My Trivia Live, had a life changing
miracle happen to her health wise and has now become a preacher. She is doing so much good work
and remains so close to our hearts. She was just one of many wonderful people who went out on a limb
for our family and its business.
Somewhere around the year 2009 our business got introduced to what is called Charity Poker. Vendors
would come to us saying We will bring in the equipment and run the business of poker offering to
pay a rent for the space. We did a li le fact finding that we combined with some soul searching on
whether to do a business with gaming. Lunch with my priest and a very good catholic a orney/friend
sa sfied my conscience enough to try the charity poker. Dont want to put my decision making off on
anybody else but, I would prefer not dealing with a product that I believe can hurt people in the future.
No ma er how many mes I try to console my science-I s ll went ahead and got into the poker business
without a vendor.
We used the same business philosophy as we did when construc ng the Electric S ck Build it to be
the very best. We spent extra on the interior improvements including many new High Defini on T.V.s,
comfortable sea ng, etc. The new poker tables were the same ones found in the Vene an Casino in
Vegas. The poker business took off like crazy. We tripled our gross from 2010 un l the fire in May of
2013. On the weekends you couldnt find a parking space in a mall that had a total of 526 spaces. We
had pulled plans for new restrooms to be double the size of what we had. At the me of the fire we had
drawings and building permits completed and paid for with bids for construc on just about completed. In
total we spent an es mated 100,000 in improvements and had not started with the new restrooms.
The new found business success allowed us not only to be current and up to date on all bills but, it gave
us a chance to pay back some people who had chalked off their investment to the troubles around 2007.
Electric S ck, once again gets lucky with the press as the poker room made the center of Front page of
the Detroit News on February 6, 2012. At the me of the fire we were either number one in the state or
on a growth pa ern that would soon give us the number one ranking. This good fortune allowed us to
start back on the America Domani project. Life again was so much fun and filled with promise!
Es ma on during the twenty years of existence is that we were involved with or made contribu ons
rela ng to the community in the amount of 5.3 million dollars for chari es. Working hard to make the
private sector and the church community to allow us to be part of their family meant almost everything
to us. The new friends, love and smiles, without a doubt washed away any of the challenges. Thinking
back, just prior to opening the banker across the street at Comerica said to me Good Luck-everything
back there fails -you cant see it from the road. When considering all what happened at this site it is
good to remember it was just a pool hall.
On May 8th, 2013 two businesses and a fireman where lost in a fire. We strongly believe both should
have been saved and the labeling of the fire to be arson is wrong.

MAY 9, 2013 - ONE DAY AFTER THE FIRE
The inves ga on got a jump start the day a er the fire with an unexpected phone call that I received
while standing outside of the Marvasos/Electric S ck ashes. A call was made to my son Geo Marvasos
cell phone. The person making the call of whom I will not name in this book said Geo, give me the
cell number to your sister Sunday. So Geo did as requested. Two minutes later my daughter Sunday
Marvaso Gains called me over to say Dad someone wants to talk to you. This person who had a front
row seat with and was privy to discussions that took place with the City of Westland decision makers
felt compelled to share what was heard. This person a er iden fying its self said, George, make sure
you get an a orney before you talk to anyone. Somewhat puzzled I replied Whats going on? Then the
caller who I will refer to as an angel many mes over before this book has come to its conclusion said
George, what I just heard makes me sick to my stomach enough to where I actually want to throw up.
They are going to pin this fire on you or Geo. Geo a li le more than you. I replied I dont understand this
city is my family. The caller then said They will chew up their own and spit them out like nothing. I love
your family; you guys have done so much for this city. If they find out I called you they will kill me. That
is why I asked for Sundays phone in case they have a tracer on Geos phone. Get yourself an a orney
and protect yourself and your family. This caller who did such an unselfish act lays heavy on my mind for
more than just one reason. My repayment and gra tude for this most righteous gesture will be a lifelong
task for me. By way of the media and the United State Feds I will protect this person and do everything in
my power to repay this person one way or another.

DECEMBER 13, 2013 - AND FORWARD - STATUS OF THE INVESTIGATION IS STILL ON GOING NEARING
THE THREE YEAR MARK.
The inves ga on con nues and hones in on the Marvasos, the modern day Dillinger Gang. The state
police who are sworn to protect the innocent le behind a mul tude of persons that should have been
interrogated. Some who may have had a real mo ve to commit arson and others who just might know
something. Lets start with some of the Marvaso workers who closed the business the night of the fire.
The business closed approximately at 3:30am.

DWAYNE GAINS THE CLOSING MANAGER:


Dwayne was the last person out with the keys to the building and responsible for the closing and
security of the building, its employees and its customers. He was never deposed. He got two calls from
the police of which the first one asked about an electrical panel. The second call Dwayne said they spent
more me asking ques ons about Geo Marvaso than anything else. Reminder: the call made to me
the day a er the fire before any kind of facts could be assembled, a person entranced deep into the
establishment saying, of which is so much worth repea ng George, protect yourself. They are going to
try and pin this on you and your son. It makes me sick enough to where I want to throw up. They will
chew up their own and spit them out. They will kill me if they find out but, I love your family, you guys
have done so much for this city.

EUGENE ABDUL THE MALLS LANDLORD/OWNER:


I called Eugene at least a couple of mes to see if he had been approached by any authori es. His
answer has always been No. I dis nctly remember one call about a year and a half a er the fire, when
I called Eugene from the Novi library. I was working at the library because my computer was s ll being
retained by the state police. The same police who said they would return everything within a couple of
weeks. Now lets remember there is a death involved here. Should the landlord have been spoken to?
I cannot say I know Eugenes business numbers but, there were many vacancies for the most part and
always have been in that mall. To add to the point the economic developer Lori Fodale had men oned
the stress of the malls in the Westland Area more than once. There is no way that mall could have been
as strong as our business was at the me of the fire. How would the police not inves gate the landlord
when it is a known fact people burn down businesses for insurance claims when in stress right? --Oh
yes-right! In an earlier chapter The story of the Business there was a verbal descrip on of our business,
now lets take a look at the business numbers at the me of the fire:

Charity poker was the main reason for the increased business which also supplied improved sales
for food and beverage. We were aggressively reinves ng into the business! An es mated 100,000 was
spent on leasehold improvements six months before and con nuing up to the fire. We had architectural
drawings finished and paid for for new restrooms to be extended into the side parking lot. Also- applied
for, approved and paid for were the city permits to do the restroom construc on (total of 3,508 for the
drawings and permit). The business was growing so fast the employees were asked to park outside the
mall which had 526 spaces for every store in the mall. Friday and Saturday nights were a challenge for
customers to even get in the front door. Actually many got turned away. Our dream to build the large
1,000 employee concept had started to resurface again. Business mee ngs for such can be validated.
Yes, history has shown people do burn down businesses for selfish reasons but, why someone would
burn down a business that was there for 20 years, employed a husband and wife, three of their four
children, some grandchildren, and provide hopes that a business dream of which we had already spent
nearly a half a million dollars for predevelopment Im sure would perplex ANYONE?. One more me, why
not destroy something that so much hard work had been put into. Many years of sweat and labor for
my family and its future all down the drain. Sure disregard the most wonderful employees, the City
of Westland and just be that irresponsible for concern of collateral damages to others. Whatever fact
allowed the judge to permit that search warrant?
There was not a large amount of funds le in the bank at the me of the fire. As men oned we had
been spending on the site to keep the momentum we had been lucky enough to acquire but, we did pay

Bobby and Darren are two more key persons who were not inves gated. We gave Bobby Tatman to
the police as a poten al person for star ng the fire. (LET ME FIT THIS IN EVERY NOW AND THEN---THERE
WAS NO ARSON!). The very day before the fire several of the girls on the wait staff came to me and
said Did you know Bobby Tatman is a convicted rapist? He is really ge ng us kind of nervous by making
advances toward us, can you do something? I said Sorry that is something we should have checked into
ourselves. Be careful girls and let me do a li le research. I went online and saw that Bobby had served
five years for rape. When Bobby showed up at our business a couple of mes working for a refrigera on
company he really won us over with kind demeanor and good manners. He asked if he could work for us
and we said Yes without doing a background check. I told the girls I would let him go at the end of the
shi next day (day of the fire). Who knows if the word to release him didnt get out that day? It would
not be the first me someone didnt keep a secret. Lets set the stage. We have a known felon rapist who
is going to get fired the following day and it just so happens the building burns down that day. Darren
Noel the other cook that I men oned earlier called me one day a er seeing the story on the news that
the fire department had changed the cause of the fire to arson. He said, George did you know Bobby
was on the roof at least a couple of mes the week before the fire? He could not pin point when but,
he was sure it was just before the fire, at night, while Bobby was s ll on the me clock. Darren said he
would talk to the police without any hesita on. So I told the state police of this and gave them Darrens
contact number. Did the police talk to Bobby? I am not sure. But they never did talk to Darren. WOW!
Did they raid Bobbys house? Not sure but, if they did it didnt make the news on several sta ons like it
did for the Marvasos. The T.V. news sta ons blasted Warrants have been served. How damaging to
our character! When our forefathers created the 4th amendment it was to protect the American ci zen
from this very thing.

JEFF KAVANAUGH A WESTLAND POLICE OFFICER AND


BRIAN BROWN A VISION LANES POKER ROOM AFFILIATE:
Jeff plays a major role in this story. Jeff is not only a police officer he is an owner of the Vision Lanes
Poker Room and a once upon a me friend and loyal customer to our business/family prior to our going
into the poker business. Jeff once told me to my face, Marvasos is my favorite restaurant and I bring all
my private family func ons only to Marvasos. Once we became a compe tor to Jeff all things changed
much for the worst. It all sort of started with Jeff and Brian watching over our shoulders on every move
we made. Jeff called the Lo ery and the Gaming board trying to get us in trouble as o en as possible.
We had the best rela onship with the state though. When the inspectors would come down they would
say You have a compe tor calling on you so just try to keep things in order-ok. When the state gaming
board took over charity poker for the lo ery they came to us saying It looks like you have things in good
order and we the Gaming Board are just trying to make a smooth transi on---would you mind helping
us? My/our answer was Our home is your home let us know whatever you need 24/7. We will give
you labor, food and drink plus all our files are available to you. They stayed a few weeks and le very
apprecia ve and we maintained the best rela onship ever since. The calls from Jeff to the gaming board
were ongoing along with threats that we would hear from me to me. One threat that we would hear

over and over from Jeff and his affiliate Brian Brown is We are going to bring that business down. Again
in capitols WE ARE GOING TO BRING THAT BUSINESS DOWN. That statement was given to the state
police. Was Brian Brown inves gated-who knows? Was Jeff ques oned by the state police? If so to what
level was he pursued? As the story unfolds compare Jeffs mo ve with ours.

MIKE MCCARTHY POKER MANAGER FOR ELECTRIC STICK:


Mike came in to our back office a couple of weeks before the fire and said George, Brian Brown is out
there playing cards and he is saying to everybody that they are going to bring this business down again.
I talked to my son Geo about this and asked him what we should do and he said
Dad, Im not sure what to do-they have been saying that for quite a while. Is it
just a lot of rubbish? Im not sure nor what to do about it. Was Mike approached
by the state police?
Of all the employees that closed the business the night of the fire there
was only one who got ques oned by the state police, a waitress named Sarah
Mackey. Sarah, the great friend and employee she was/is was a person of just
limited responsibility. The police ques oning Sarah had us a li le puzzled. Why
not Dwayne the closing manager? Sarah told me they just asked mostly general
ques ons but only two ques ons stood out in her mind. Do you think the
Marvasos started the fire? She said No. Policeman then asked If it was arson who do you think
might have started it Sarah answered Jeff Kavanaugh.

As previously men oned in an earlier chapter once we became a compe tor with Jeff two things
happened. One, we did everything we could to build the very best charity poker room in the state
through hard work, a vision and on a legal playing field. The second thing that happened was Jeff and
Vision Lanes did whatever it could to destroy those efforts and our business no ma er what.

ROBERT MULKA OF WESTLAND MICHIGAN:


Let me introduce Robert Mulka to you? What part does he play in this most absolute worst nightmare?
Robert is an Ex son in law of ours going back more than 30 years from the me of the fire. Mulkas
home gets raided with similari es to the raids that occurred at our homes. He told me he was caught
totally by surprise when four police cars and eight state police officers showed up at his home one day in
the early part of the winter in 2014. Robs children said Dad the police are here for you. Rob, being very
much befuddled said Why are you here? The officers said We are here to arrest you. You have several
traffic warrants outstanding but more important your involvement with the fire at the Electric S ck. Rob
replied What? Policeman

we have your D.N.A. from the fire scene at The Electric S ck. Rob then said You dont have shit. They
went on to tell rob We have proof you have been hanging around with them and if you are willing to
cooperate we will not arrest you. Rob went on to say I have not seen the Marvasos in a very long
me-maybe ten or fi een years. The police then said Come on and get in the police car, the judge

will arraign you and that will be that. Rob said they ques oned him for over three hours. One ques on
he remembers them asking Do you think George would have started that fire? Rob, I remember
when my parents were alive all they talked about was how good a family I had married into and she
loved the fact they were ac ve Chris ans. There is no way George or anyone in his family started that
fire-count on it!
The story of Rob Mulka is extremely important as we a empt to put the dots together. You see Rob,
had a fire in his home a long me ago actually pre Electric S ck. Fast-forward to a me not long a er the
Electric S ck had been built I just so happened to be at the fire sta on and having a visit with the ex-fire
Chief Mike Reddy Sr. I dont remember the reason for the visit but, I dis nctly remember Mike Reddy Sr.
showing me some photos of Robs home fire and saying See this fire, we know it was arson because
there was gasoline inside the house I replied, Wow that is my ex son in-law. THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY
FOR THE POLICE TO GET TO ROBS HOUSE, THAT WOULD BE FROM MIKE REDDY SR CONNECTING THAT
DISCUSSION MIKE AND I HAD AT THE FIRE DEPARTMENT OFFICES! IT IS THE ONLY WAY! I had heard about
the police going to Robs house when it happened but, only got a report third hand from my daughter
Candy. Our whole familys response was no more than just WOW! So when I called him here recently to
get a firsthand version of Robs account of his raid, I let him know about the situa on of Mike and I and
thats how they got to your house. Rob told me he went to jail concerning his home fire for about seven
months wai ng on a jury trial that concluded in his release.

Two very important pieces of informa on to note:


1. Remember the phone call that I got from the angel who put their neck out for us just because it
was the right thing to do. GEORGE, GET YOURSELF AN ATTORNEY. WHAT I JUST HEARD MAKES ME SICK
TO MY STOMACH. THEY ARE GOING TO TRY AND PIN THIS ON YOU AND YOUR SON GEO. THEY WILL EAT
THEIR OWN, CHEW THEM UP AND SPIT THEM OUT. I cannot express how much I love that caller!
2. Mike Reddy Sr. is the father of the present fire Chief Mike Reddy Jr (known as Puff). Puff was the fire
chief at the me of our fire. And just as important is the fact that Fire Marshall Kelly Egger is the son of
Mike Reddy Srs second and present wife Lori. Note that fire Marshall Kelly was one of the team members
present the day of the Electric S ck fire when the fireman lost his life.

THE MARVASO FAMILY POLYGRAGH TESTS:


The polygraph tests took place in April of 2014. The inves ga on is going nowhere and the insurance
company has zero interest in living up to its policy. Sgt. Sunshine Ponze , the lead detec ve in charge
of this arson/homicide case says George, just take the polygraph tests and it will clear up everything.
By this me I had lost almost a year of business. Reflec ng back we agreed with no hesita on during
the family interview that took place just a er Westland changes its labeling of the fire to arson. As
men oned earlier a orney Stuart Sklar said, George, dont do it. There is a homicide here. Do you know
how many people go to jail while being innocent? Stuart wanted us to take a private one first. Ponze s
response to that was We wont accept it anyway So we agreed to take the test pu ng a orneys
advise aside. I had talked to a re red police chief and he recommended taking the test saying they are
very accurate. Further research with two other experts both said these new machines are so accurate

and pre y much right on. They added the person giving the test is very important because it is their
responsibility to not make you nervous. So lets get it done. A mee ng takes place at the Michigan State
Police office in Taylor, Michigan. Present are Sgt Ponze , her boss, my a orney Doug Young and myself.
By this me our funds are just about gone along with a orney fees running wild. I asked my a orney
Do you feel safe if we went for the tes ng without you? The tests were to be performed in Lansing,
Michigan and with Doug being on the hour we were trying now to save and survive. Doug asked the two
police officers What kind of ques ons are you going to ask? Ponze s response was Just three or four
ques ons like What is your name? What is the day of the week? Did you start the fire? Do you know
who started the fire? And thats about it. Short and simple. Doug replied, All right, but, provide me
with a list of your ques ons. My son Geo and I went to Lansing a day before the girls, my wife Mary,
daughters Sunday and Leslie. Geo went in to get tested first while I waited my turn. Before they could get
to my test, Geo and an officer came out saying he will have to come back the machine is reading not
truthful even on simple ques ons like What day of the week is it and what is your name? Geo and I
both thought that was odd but agreed to come back all together with the girls.

THE NEXT TRIP TO LANSING WITH ALL FIVE TO BE TESTED:

POLYGRAPH TEST-GEORGE MARVASO SR:


In all honestly I do not remember too many of the ques ons being out of line for what was intended.
The officer did not say anything to make me uncomfortable. When he returned a er the ques oning
he asked How do you think you did I replied You tell me. He said You failed. I said very calmly
Well I told you the truth. Do you think I started the fire? He responded OH WE KNOW YOU DID NOT
START THE FIRE BUT WE THINK YOU KNOW SOMETHING. I remained calm because I knew I had told
the 100% complete truth and was in no way nervous at all. Although my response to failing the test
one might say seemed poli cally correct and somewhat presiden al I wish I would have handled my
response more like my children did with a li le bit of Donald Trump with a connota on of Fight back
when you are falsely a acked.

POLYGRAPH TEST-GEO MARVASO JR:


Ill start this test with a reminder to the reader about the promises made by Detec ve Ponze before
taking the test- concerning what the ques ons were to be. Ponze s response to what ques ons Oh it
will be very short and simple, three or four ques ons like What is your name? What day is it? Did you
start the fire? Do you know who started the fire?
No sooner did Geo get in the interroga on room he was told We know you started the fire. Geos
reply in a harsh loud voice You dont know fuckin shit! The detec ve then said well we know that
you know something about the fire. Geos next response was You not only dont know shit you are a
fuckin liar. Geo, called me on his cell phone and said Dad they are trying to pin arson on me. What
should I do? I told him Tell them you want to talk to your lawyer and you are done with that test
What was told to me and Doug Young in the Taylor, Michigan State Police sta on was not true and
illegal. The final results of the test for Geo was labeled that he failed but, IT REVEALED HE DID NOT

START THE FIRE. Geo was the General Manager for both Marvasos and Electric S ck, his only means
of making a living.

POLYGRAPH TEST-MARY MARVASO:


Marys test ques ons were pre y much similar to mine. The results of her test were that she passed.
That means if I knew something I never told my wife whatever it is they think I know or truthfully
trying to just indicate that I know something. At the end of her test they asked How do you think
you did. Mary replied I know I passed. The officer said Yes you passed. Mary, are willing to talk to
the detec ves. She said Absolutely not you are trying to pin something on my husband and son we
cannot understand why?
On top of that Mary reminds me today that our family willing to talk at length to many detec ves in
Royal Oak and all that coopera ng got us was to get our homes raided. Mary was not only co-owner
she worked every day at the business.

POLYGRAPH TEST-LESLIE MARVASO RINTZ:


Leslie s a daughter of ours and was a supervisor on the Electric S ck side for the most part. The
ques ons that were asked of Leslie were not even close to what was promised to be asked. The police
had informa on from the City of Westland in order to come up with her ques ons. There were the usual
ques ons Did you start or know who started the fire? Another ques on: Do you get along with your
family and your workers? That is a loaded ques on that wont be explained in this book but, will be
explained to the Feds. Another ques on: Did you ever cheat on your husband? Leslie revealed an
important piece of informa on to our family while we were pu ng facts together and that was she
one me went on a date with the present fire chief Mike Reddy Jr (Puff). So lets figure out where that
ques on came from. There is another ques on being omi ed here on behalf of Leslies request that could
only have come from the Reddys. Leslie is a very high strung person and gets nervous very easily. While
sharing each others stories at a dining room table Leslie men oned just how hard that test was on her.
Now here is a clincher-when asked Do you think you passed? She said Yes and the officer said you
not only passed you had the best/highest score of all. Who knows our family be er then ourselves and
we all agree that is just a joke.

POLYGRAPH TEST-SUNDAY MARVASO GAINS:


Sunday was an assistant General Manager/Wait staff Whatever you need me to do employee and
family member who relied on this business as a means to feed her family. The usual fire ques ons
were asked combined with ques ons Sunday felt very personal of which she said they made her very
uncomfortable. She was asked if she ever lied to her parents. She answered Yes. She was asked about
an event that happened when she was about 20 years old that made her feel very bad. They asked about
Geos drinking as they followed whatever agenda they had. At the end of test she was asked, like all of
us were Do you think you passed Sunday said Yes. Then the Detec ve said You not only passed-you
passed with flying colors. Would you like to talk to the detec ves? She said No and then walked
directly into the lobby. On the way out Sgt. McArthur ran out saying Sunday you passed Sunday replied

I know I did!! McArthur Do you want to talk to the detec ves? Sunday said No because all you guys
are trying to do is blame my dad and my brother. What is the mo ve? McArthur, Some mes there is no
mo ve. Sunday and Mary just walked off in her wordsPissed.
SUMMARY OF THE POLYGRAPH TEST:

The tests were set up! The tests results for Geo and I are untrue! The tests were illegal and out
of compliance with the communica ons that took place with our a orney Doug Young and myself. The
damages of these tests and the inves ga on being conducted on a law abiding American family also
have high impact damages to the integrity of the many fine police in our country, the State of Michigan
and most importantly our American way.

SUMMARY OF THE INVESTIGATION:

The inves ga on according to the Michigan State Police is s ll on going. Todays date is March 18,
2016 less than two months short of three years since the fire. Facts of the inves ga on may show up and
or intertwine in a following chapter en tled The Cover Up.

Was there a cover up? The answer is Yes. What was there to cover up? A botched a empt to
ex nguish a fire. Who was at fault? The City of Westland and its fire department are. Was there arson?
We are beyond a shadow of a doubt there was no arson! Cover Ups are a part of history going back
forever. Will they ever end? Not un l all human beings figure how to tell the truth every me they open
their mouth. Sorry but, we are just not built that way. Who was involved in the cover up and why? We
believe the City of Westland officials and the Michigan State Police. The why of that ques on will be
answered in a later chapter to follow.
Father Gerry and I go for lunch from me to me to catch up on the issues and challenges for both
the church and for our family. Most of the me spent is Father Gerry helping me, especially since the fire.
Here about a month ago we met at Red Lobster and as I spilled out all the details on to his shoulders he
gave some instruc ons for me to follow. George, its movie going me for you and I want you to go see
three movies of which the first should be Spotlight. I am sure many of you have seen these movies as
Spotlight was voted by the Academy Awards as the best movie of the year 2015. The other two movies
The Big Short (housing market) and Concussion (The Na onal Football League) were similar in the
fact that all provide a product largely demanded by the public. All were involved in a Cover Up. Each
of these en es is so large and is in such demand that their decision makers chose to hide things that
were wrong, and may disrupt the good they do. The movie Spotlight is about the Catholic Church and
the issues it has concerning their own clergys involvement in their sex scandals. The Catholic Church
is a wonderful ins tu on that does so much good. But, with all its glory it should not deviate from the
teachings of Who the founda ons are built upon. Jesus Christ said I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
The cover ups in those stories and maybe just about any cover up are not of the truth Jesus spoke of.
The inves ga on and the cover up got started May 9, 2013 the day a er the fire but, a major incident
happened on Oct 25, 2013 nearly six months a er the fire. October 25, 2013 was the infamous day of the
Westland Fire Department changing the status of the fire:
Not knowing of any change at this me when I just happened to called Sgt. Ponze for an update with
the inves ga on. As men oned in an earlier chapter, I responded totally puzzled when she said George,
did you know John Adams is calling your fire arson?

WESTLAND FIRE REPORT THAT WAS GIVEN TO US, OUR LAWYERS AND TO MIOSHA CAUSE OF FIRE.

Not too long a er that call to Ponze I requested a luncheon with City Councilman Bill Johnson. Bill is a
rock to the community who is entrenched in many ways.

I asked him to meet me at Panera Bread to discuss the fire. I said Bill do you know they changed the fire
status to arson? Bill replied No George, I just talked to John Adams and he told me it was not arson
He said it was men oned during city council as well-that it was not arson. I want to shout out just how
much Bill does for the community but, he does not like boas ng. This man understands the value of the
truth and what it does for him and mankind.
The City of Westland was given a 55 page report from MIOSHA that included viola ons and fines for
their handling of the fire. Copies of that report are available by way of the FOIA-Freedom of Informa on
Act.

We had such a wonderful rela onship with the police and fire departments before the May 8, 2013 fire.
Not only did they all hang out at our business, they did a great job of protec ng our business and the
en re staff. I remember one day I made a le hand turn on a yellow light at the cross streets of Wayne
and Cherryhill and got pulled over by a Westland police officer. We pulled into a car wash lot so as not to
block Wayne road and the officer and I both rolled down our windows before ge ng out of them. Both
vehicles where a good distance from each other, when I first said to the officer Did I go through that
yellow light a li le late? The officer looked for a couple of seconds and then said George is that you?
I replied Yes, how you doing? I breathed a li le sigh of relief as his tone seemed very friendly in his
response. He then said in a very complimentary connota on You didnt do a darn thing wrong. I yelled
out Love you not even knowing who he was and did not ever find out who the guy was that showed
me so much respect.
Another incident that made me reflect on how much we have lost since the fire happened in the lobby
of the Wayne Westland Credit Union. On this day Mary and I were collec ng dona ons for the Westland
Lions during White Cane week. Mrs. Sharon Sco , a former city council person and a long me involved
person in Westland comes out of the credit union and we go into a spontaneous hug and How have
you been doing? type reac on. For three hours so many more people/customers etc. with the same type
responses like Hey, when are you guys going to rebuild? Weve been dying to get our taste buds on some
of that Cherry Chicken Farfalle. During this me I reflected on something so very important of what we
have lost forever and that was OUR FAMILY-WESTLAND. Even if the insurance company was to act right
and pay off, and we were to rebuild and become financially successful you just cant recreate all those
mes that were had. Living life and good mes are spontaneous. The en es and people involved in this
irresponsible ordeal-STOLE OUR FAMILY.
The police of today are taking it on the chin as we see in the news every day. It is only a small por on
of the bad cops that hurt the many who put their lives on the line for us every day. Not too long ago
while watching the events unfold at San Bernardino with those two terrorists and unfortunate losses
of innocent life, I was so impressed by how all authori es there handled that event. The state, county,
city, and Feds all did a great job.
BUT LETS LOOK AT A COUPLE OF RENOWNED COVER UPS:
Watergate tapes concerning a cover-up with President Nixon drew a response worldwide. Another
incident recently was the youth that got shot at with sixteen bullets and killed in Chicago, had informa-
on held up several months un l someone used the FOIA and exposed the story. Mayor seems to be
in some heat over it. Also, on that same case there was a Burger King that got a visit by the police
to look at their security tape. The next day the Burger King owner said on T.V. they had 90 minutes
of tape missing.
Speaking of Chicago and going back some me we all remember the notorious gangster Al Capone.
Cover up was everywhere as he had the police, the poli cians and most everybody on the clamp down.
So Nixon with the highest office in the world and with so much power was either forced to resign or
face inevitable impeachment. Now Al Capone with all those thugs, machine guns and money did even
worse-des na on was prison and an inherited sexual disease. What they were both missing was the
ninth commandment that speaks of truth. When Jesus men oned He was of the truth he didnt mean

every now and then. Not, every leap year. Or whenever you feel like it. He meant every day every me
for eternity.

I will end this chapter with the very important mee ng that has been already men oned in the chapter
en tled The Fire Inves ga on. If you the reader will recall the mee ng that took place at the Taylor,
Michigan State Police Sta on in April of 2014 which was scheduled to discuss the polygraph tests for the
Marvaso family. During that mee ng with Sgt. Ponze , her supervisor, a orney Doug Young and myself
Ponze said to me in a very firm voice George, you said Jeff Kavanaugh was at the site right a er the
fire started, well thats not true. He was not near the site and he has his log in sheet to prove it. Plus,
his partner will tes fy that he was not there. My response was Well that will be easy to prove there
are plenty of witnesses that saw him there. When I got home I dug up an overwhelming amount of
informa on showing that was a lie and in my opinion Blue covering Blue. Already in this book have
been photos and e-mails from Jeff himself saying he was there (again in his own words) at the site at
816am in the morning. The alarm did not go off un l 817am, but he says he arrived at 816am. Ponze
says she can prove he was not there. Remember, you need a mo ve-right? Inves ga on 101 will tell you
that. Did Jeff have a mo ve? Remember he was the compe tor who, along with his partner said We
are going to bring that building down. Jeff is the same person Honigman/Miller warned to stay away
from Marvasos and their business. I keep this part of the conversa on that took place at the state police
office separate for a reason. The por on of that mee ngs conversa on that was men oned in The Fire
Inves ga on chapter was to show that the police just kept on the Marvasos no ma er how clear a
mo ve from us was just absolutely inconceivable. That business was all we had to our name. It was
performing with numbers and growth that were almost unmatchable per square foot.

I will look at the information. George believed he arrived in uniform and found it odd
then said he was in plain clothes doing an investigation. He was definitely there at the
scene and we have known that he responded. George believed he was there on scene
in uniform as one of the first people on scene by himself, like he discovered the fire on
his own. We identified the person George heard rumors about and it was not Jeff
Kavanaugh. George believes Jeff Kavanaugh is a suspect because of the competing
poker room. We are investigating that as well. He has never denied any presence in my
investigation. We have known since the fire that he was there. However George's
account of rumors do not appear to be true. He believed people saw him at the scene
when the fire started by himself. I have not discovered that in my investigation. I was
trying to explain to George that he was here but not as George originally thought. I have
the report from Westland Police and have known he was there since I was briefed on

George has also provided me the emails in person and by email and I discussed them
with him in person. I am aware of the email from Jeff Cavanaugh.

Good Morning Charities,


I understand that some of you may not be connected to the charities anymore, but I
wanted to reach out to everyone. It is with sadness that I write to you today. I have
received alot of phone calls and emails, which prompted me to write this letter or I would
not address this issue in this manner. Most of you are probably aware of the unfortunate
accident that occurred at the Electric Stick and the tremendous loss to our Community.
As a Sgt with the Westland Police Department, I was one of the first Ofcs on the
scene and was there, when Firefighter Woehlke was pulled from the building, It indeed
is a very sad day for Westland. Not only for losing a Brave Man, but also a great
establishment that has been very supportive to the community for over 20 years.
After the numerous groups calling me and emailing me yesterday to move their license
etc, I wanted to reach out to everyone and let you know that if you do continue to use
charity poker as a fundraiser we have a few openings. We have adjusted our schedule
to accommodate any who may still want to use Charity Poker as a means of fund
raising. You may not be aware that Trip Kings in Canton closed there doors
permanently on Monday of this week also. So we are the only Charity Poker Room in
the area. Northville Downs and Doc's are still operating, but at full capacity. We at
Krazy Kopz, are saddened by the way that we had to come to this decision, of
extending our operating days. But due to the tremendous loss to our community, we
feel that we need to explore this option with all of you, to again service your fund raising
needs.
We have spoken to Gaming Commission. If you currently have a license that was
approved at the Electric Stick, they will expedite a change to your license. If this is your
group, call me today so we can make the transition for you. We anticipate a majority of
the players will come to us for there gaming needs. We are also planning a fundraiser
for Firefighter Brian Woehlke, The Brian Woehlke Charity Poker Tournament, is

In recent presiden al debates there has been said more than once The insurance companies control
the poli cians. Lord Actons world renowned quote Power tends to corrupt and absolute power cor-
rupts absolutely. Please remember those two quotes while you read this chapter. Be er yet remember
them long a er you read this book.
Governor Rick Snyder, Billionaire Manoj Bhargava and businessman George Marvaso all have a
definite connec on in this story. Lets put together some details connec ng those three and how they
might play a part in this story of Christ in Fire.

1. Governor Snyder and Billionaire Bhargava Connec on:


Bhargava is the founder and owner of 5 Hour Energy and also a large donor into the Republican Party.
Online see an ar cle by Ben Wieder called The Poli cal Kingmaker Nobody Knows from The Center
for Public Integrity. This ar cle gives in detail to some extent of how much Bhargava has given and for
what. An excerpt from this ar cle reads Few people have given as much to poli cs at the state level as
Bhargava and his companies have in the past five years, and donors of such generosity are typically well
known and aggressively courted by poli cians who need favor to pay for their campaigns. Yet Bhargava
avoids the spotlight, both in poli cs and life: he said in a 2012 television interview that fame puts a
bulls-eye on your forehead. And hes gone to great lengths to obscure his poli cal ac vity, even as his
signature product, 5 Hour Energy draws more scru ny from some of the same poli cians he supports.
Bhargavas investment firm ETC Capital gave 2.5 million to the Republican Governors Associa on. Since
2009, ETC Capitol has given nearly $4.9 million to state candidates and poli cal groups across the
country, which helped it become one of the top 50 donors to state races in 2014. It is unclear why
the giving has come in ETC Capitals name or who in the company decides which poli cal groups merit
dona ons. This ar cle can also be found when going online to Time.com/Bhargava.
So this means Bhargava is a poli cal donor, right? What does that have to do with Gov. Snyder?
Well for starters there was the story of an a orney with affilia ons to Snyder and Bhargava who got a
DUI pardoned by Gov. Snyder. This story got much scru ny and coverage on TVs Flashpoint Channel 7 on
March 29, 2015 and with the associated press March 27 2015 (writers David Eggert and Ed White). The
DUI pardon was for an Oakland County a orney named Gocha who was at one me a $250,000 a orney
for Bhargavas 5 Hour Energy. On the applica on for the pardon Gocha was asked to list charitable or
civic ac vi es of which he listed his church, a law school speech and board membership at the state
Chamber of Commerce. HE DID NOT DISCLOSE THAT HE WAS A 2011 SNYDER APPOINTEE TO THE TALENT
INVESTMENT BOARD (Reference Associated Press). Flashpoints Devin Scillian said there were only 11
pardons given out of 750 applica ons. On the panel that day was a columnist named Nancy Kaffer who
men oned that the 5 Hour Energy people gave 26 million to the Republican Governors Associa on and
What the Governor did by signing the pardon may have been legal,but it sure was not right. Gocha

said the police had no reason to stop him, but that was a losing argument. Hes got half of his car
in the oncoming le lane, Judge Kimberly Small said a er watching the dash-cam video. This isnt
even close. The references men oned here are easily obtainable to the seeker. For whatever it may be
worth Geoffrey Fieger spent a fair me in the news and on T.V. concerning the problems created by the
Governor pardoning this DUI and how unfair it is to ci zens who cannot afford to be in the governors
contribu on arena.

1. Billionaire Manoj Bhargava and George Marvaso Businessperson:


The connec on between Manoj and me is that I am the insured and Bhargava is the owner of my
insurance company-Prime One Insurance. Prime One has done everything and anything so as not to pay
for our fire. This chapter will end up explaining just how many ways but, for now lets discuss a me not
long a er we could see Prime Ones reluctance to pay.
I met in Panera Bread with a gentleman named Mr. Larry Fucinari who is with Global Midwest
Fire Adjusters. The mee ng was to see if a company like Global Midwest would help make a stubborn
insurance company pay off for their policy. Before we started any nego a ons like for their fees, work
scope etc. Larry glanced at the policy in my hand and said George, you know you are not going to get
your money for a long me. My reply was Why not? Larry then said That company you hired (Prime
One) pays nobody. They will do whatever they can to delay and or not pay. You really have to give Larry
a lot of credit being he was there to obtain a new business account. Compe tors of Larrys sell their
services with Once you hire an adjuster-we have ways of making stubborn insurance companies pay off.
By this me I am running out of money. Prime One claims they are not ge ng the informa on from me
and my accountant that they are reques ng. We sent them everything they asked for and their response
We never got it. We went to Global Midwest because they are the largest and the best in the state for
what they do. It should be noted Larry has over 40 years of experience.
A er spending around $35,000 with Global and not ge ng any results we put in a law suit. Fast-
forward to a deposi on of Larrys that took place in the Global offices that included my a orney Doug
Young, Prime Ones a orney David Berkal and the insurance agents a orney Tom Costello. Under oath
Larry says Yes, I did tell George, right from the start that Prime One would do whatever they had to
do not to pay. He then added while looking at their a orneys straight in the eyes WHAT YOU PEOPLE
ARE DOING IS A SIN. YOU ARE HURTING AND COSTING SO MANY PEOPLE. Youre ruining it for the good
insurance companies, a orneys, tax payers and whoever. The story of the insurance company and how
many ways they tried not to pay will con nue at the end of this chapter.

2. Governor Snyder and George Marvaso Connec on:


The connec on between the governor and I goes back to the business of charity poker. For some me
now the Governor has been doing his best to either shrink or stop charity poker. It has been in the news
and in court rooms being a ba le between the chari es, room owners and the state for who should have
the right to do business. The rumors and or thoughts are that the casinos dont want the compe on and
like the insurance companies they have their way with the poli cians. Who knows? An opportunity to
speak on behalf of the chari es and room owners in Lansing came to frui on so I did - twice. Our business

like so many others was setup to do business according to the laws of the state. We spent a lot of money
to perform under those set of rules and laws. Not long a er our fire all the laws changed drama cally.
Charity poker was on a serious downward spiral.
Chari es provide so much for our community like The Lions, Goodfellows, Rotary, schools, churches and
way too many to men on. In fact Father Gerry announced last week the parking lot repaving was being
paid by charity poker. Each me I spoke at the capitol there was a panel of 5 state house reps and 5 state
senators. I asked the panel to consider all the good the chari es do and at the same me let the room
owners operate under the premise of equal opportunity for all Americans. I asked them to remember
what is recited every day before their sessions- One na on under God with Liberty and jus ce for all. I
truly believe the governor has held my speaking out against me. No doubt he will deny that.
Senator Rick Jones proposed bill 878 that with modifica ons was fair to the state, the chari es and
the room owners. It passed the senate with a vote of 37-0. It never got to the house. Many thought
it would never get to the house because it was not what the governor wanted. Either way 37-0-why
didnt it get to the house?
The Governor knows who we are. He knows who I am. Not only because of reports from his staff
concerning those mee ngs in Lansing-remember how big The Electric S ck had grown in a very short
me with charity poker. If we did not become the largest in the state we would have become very quickly
if the fire had not happened. We made the front page of the Detroit News on February 6, 2012 right in
the center of the paper just below Madonna, Clint Eastwood and Eli Manning. Another reason he knows
of us for sure is that the fire we had, made way to his desk. He named a street in Westland a er the
fallen fireman Brian Woehlke. There is no way when he was briefed on the loca on of the fire did he
not hear the name Electric S ck owned by the Marvaso Family. The connec on of Snyder, Bhargava and
I will present a theory beyond comprehension for how rich and supposedly responsible people consider
Americans not in their social circle.
Four ways Prime One a empted to form a reason not to pay:
1. First six months-Prime One claims we were not giving them informa on requested.
2. Arson Theory.
3. We were financially pressed and so we burned the business down to get some extra cash-or?
4. Understanding none of their theories were true they tried a last ditch a empt claiming applica on
misrepresenta on.

See applica on where it asks have you been in bankruptcy in the last five years. No ce the applica on is
marked Y for yes with a comment. We have so much material from previous applica ons that reveals
we NEVER tried to misrepresent any applica on.

Judge Oxholm of Wayne County ruled in our favor in the case against Prime One Insurance and
second case against the insurance agent, Kaplani Insurance Agency for failure to increase coverage when
instructed to. The Judge wanted us to try and se le with a facilitator so we did. The claim was for an
es mated 1.1 million and they asked me to make an offer so I proposed a decrease of a li le more than
10%. Their counter offer was $31,000. Let me repeat-a claim of 1.1 million they offered 31,000. When
we told the facilitator They are just playing with peoples lives so we will be leaving now. He replied
Oh they have more money to give you, let me try them again. We agreed. He came back and said
they agreed to something like $131,000. I became very disgruntled and said Everybody here is making

a orney who shared an experience on a case he had against Bhargava in the past. I would love to share
the details of that case of which Bhargava lost and what he supposedly did a er the loss but I wont.
I wouldnt betray the trust in his story but, a er reading about the story it seemed very close to fact. I
believed him whole hear ly knowing what we know now. . The Prime One inves gator at the me of
the fire was a Mr. Gerald Sco . . Mr. Sco had many years of experience that included licenses to work
in several different states. In Mr. Sco s deposi on he expressed many nega ve comments about Prime
One that led him to leave the company.
I wrote le ers to so many people seeking help. I sent le ers to Bhargava several mes to both
his home and his business. I asked him to meet with me face to face so as to understand his posi on.
Bhargava was a religious monk in India for 12 years before making it big with 5 Hour Energy. I was going
to ask him to fall back on those beliefs of his which I hope would be to do the right thing by helping
others-not hur ng people. Many have told me he will make you suffer un l he gets an advantage. A
le er to Governor Snyder went out on April 17, 2014 and again got no response. Seeking assistance from
news sta ons, the state insurance board, and the a orney generals office are just a few a empts we
made. Most gave some sort of response but, nothing to help.

The date today is March 30, 2016 and we are scheduled to move this Friday April 1st, 2016 via
evic on from our rental condo of 11 years. First months rent and security deposit donated from St.
Vincent DePaul (St. Simon and Jude Catholic Church Westland, Michigan) and Holy Family Catholic Church
in Novi, Michigan. Rent for May 1st somewhat unclear. We have a nega ve monthly living expense of
1,200 and have been receiving help from family, friends, Veteran organiza ons and an ungodly amount
of do gooders of which a book by itself would be required in order to men on and thank all of them.
The month prior to the fire we had a net of $30,000 and climbing fast. This was over and above all
family salaries.

and a small business family presents such a ques on. A reminder of just how small and humble this

by the court of appeals for considera on to overturn Judge Oxholms decision that she rendered in our
favor. From what I understand the court of appeals for the most part will not even look at most cases
once a judge has rendered a decision. What even makes it more of a mystery is that if the court of
appeals would look at a case that if over turned for applica on misrepresenta on it would be the first
me in the history of Michigan that an applica on marked Y for yes in the box requested. Makes

Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature

I will start this chapter with a prayer. Being a selfish natured person I will proclaim that prayer is for
me. Dear Lord, give me the strength to serve you properly. Ins ll in me the passion and convic on to
fulfill My Greatest Responsibility Mark 16:15.
In the preface of this book I had expressed my reasons for wri ng this book. Yes, to tell our story
with hopes that somebody with authority would hear the facts, listen and help. I pondered further and
said to myself What can you do with this story to help yourself beyond an insurance claim and the need
to obtain jus ce within the system? Can this story help us and possibly help others at the same me?
Maybe a li le but, it seems so small amongst the world news today. Is it too small to make a difference?
Lets create a theory that the answer to that ques on might just be No.
The key to the future of the world, is finding the op mis c stories of the world and le ng them be
told

Following Petes lead along with considering how many stories are told each and every day in school
rooms, churches and elsewhere let us revisit a few renowned stories worth hearing again and again. I
have chosen the lives and accomplishments of Mother Teresa, Abraham Lincoln, and Walt Disney. Three
people who have made history with their morally correct agendas. It is upli ing and encouraging to cling
to their results in life but, what needs to be understood more importantly is what they started with, feel
their journey along the way and what is it they all had in common to rise to such heights.

MOTHER TERESA August 26, 1910-September 5, 1997


Mother Teresa unknown by some was not born poor. She was born the youngest of five into a family
whose father was successful in the construc on business. She was called to serve, in her words, The
Poorest of the Poor. Her comfortable life style while growing up was not enough to detour this amazing
life journey. Most of us know she se led in the town of Calcu a, India. The poverty rate there is no secret
but, I just happened to get a good glimpse of this town when there was an unfortunate bridge collapsing
in the middle of town here recently. CNNS cameraman did a good job of showing the many sites near
the bridge that came down. It was sad to see how poor the condi ons of the buildings were inside
and out as they conducted an interview showing the apartment for one family. The crowded streets
of Calcu a with their es mated 14 million people looked so not clean and it made me feel extremely
lucky to be an American.

Mother Teresas driving goal was to provide aid to those that society forgot. She brought aid to
orphans and the homeless, cared for the sick and dying, and even worked with lepers and those with
diseases that made it difficult to find a place in society.
In 1952, she founded the first Home of the Dying, a hospice that allowed those with terminal illnesses
to spend their last days with dignity and surrounded by compassion. Notably, these establishments were
not dedicated to the catholic faith; allowing those who followed other paths to receive rites and rituals
appropriate to their beliefs.
Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She refused the usual banquet and
ceremony tradi onally given to award winners and requested that the $192,000 prize be distributed
among the poor and sick in India. This is quite amazing being the people of India on her first entry into
their country told her to Get out; we dont want to hear about your Jesus. Going as far to even spit in
her face and humiliate her to beyond approach.
There is a recent movie made of her life which I highly recommend en tled The Le ers. This movie
will show how li le she had to start her mission with and just what type of challenges she had that
most of us cannot even imagine. With absolutely nothing but her 90 plus pound body, one dollar, the
normal body parts given to her when exi ng her mothers womb she went into the poorest of the poor
and built her Missionaries of Charity established in 1950 star ng with 12 members and today is located
in 100 countries with 4,000 members that has received over 100 million dollars per year for the poorest
of the poor.

WALT DISNEY December 5, 1901-December15, 1966


Walts story is another that starts with limited resources given to him. He quit high school when he
was sixteen to join the army but, eventually got turned down because he was too young. Not long a er
that he volunteered for the Red Cross and spent a year in France at an early age. Always a hard worker
he was known to have paper routes as a young man in the size of 600 to 700 customers making for very
long days. The biggest thing that we can learn about Walts story is his faith and the understanding not
to quit un l you have reached your goal. Before we review his gargantuan success which most of us
know about, lets touch base on some of the setbacks of which included financial nightmares that put
him millions of dollars in the red.
1. Walt formed his first anima on company in Kansas City in 1921. He made a deal with a distribu on
company in New York, in which he would ship them, his cartoons and get paid six months later. He
was forced to dissolve the company and at one point could not pay the rent and survived by ea ng
dog food.
2. Walt created a mildly successful cartoon character in 1926 named Oswald the Rabbit. When he tried
to nego ate with the distributor, Universal Studios, for be er rates for each cartoon, he was informed
that Universal had obtained ownership of the Oswald character and they hired Disneys ar st out from
under him.

3. When Walt tried to get MGM studios to distribute Mickey Mouse in 1927 he was told that the idea
would never work---a giant mouse would just terrify a woman.
4. The Three Li le Pigs was rejected by distributors in 1933 because it only had four characters, it
was felt at the me cartoons should have as many figures on the screen as possible. It later became
very successful and played at one theater so long that the poster outside featured the pigs with long
white beards.
5. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was sneak previewed by college students in 1937 who le the
hallway during the filming causing Disney great despair. It turned out the students had to leave early
because of dorm curfew.
6. Pinocchio in 1940 became extra expensive because Walt shut down the produc on to make the
puppet more sympathe c than the lying juvenile delinquent as presented in the original Carlo Collodi
story. Walt poured extra money into it with the install of Jiminy Cricket. By the me it got done Walt
lost a million dollars.
7. Walt never got to see Fantasia become a success. 1940 audiences were put off by its lack of story.
Also the final scene, The Night of Bald Mountain sequence with the devil damning the souls of the dead,
was considered unfit for children.
8. The sen mental Pollyanna in 1960 made Walt cry at the studio screening but failed at the box
office. Walt concluded that the tle was off-pu ng for young boys.
9. Walt was once fired from an employer early on in his career saying that he had no imagina on.
10. Walt had tried 302 banks before one bank took a chance on his first theme park-Disneyland. I
would have to think that the first 301 banks, that use sophis cated criteria to define what a poor risk is
just could not see any logic in the mouse.
Walt was human just like you and I. I am sure when he exited his mothers womb he had a similar start
in life equal to Mother Teresa. He suffered through many fits of anger and depression through his many
trials. Yet he learned from each setback, and con nued to take even bigger risks which combined with the
wisdom that experiencing failure can provide, led to fabulous financial rewards.

WALT AND HIS FAMILY RELIGION:


WALT DISNEY ON FAITH, CHURCH, BIBLE STUDY, PRAYER AND GOD
In these days of world tensions, when the faith of men is being tested as never before, I am personally
thankful that my parents taught me at an early age to have a strong personal belief and reliance in the
power of prayer and Divine inspira on. My people were members of the Congrega onal Church in our
home town of Marceline, Missouri. It was there where I was first taught the efficiency of religionhow
it helps us immeasurably to meet the trials and stress of life and keeps us a uned to Divine inspira on.
Later in DeMolay, I learned to believe the basic principle of the right of man to exercise his faith and
thoughts as he chooses. In DeMolay, we believe in a supreme being, in the fellowship of man, and the
sanc ty of the home. DeMolay stands for all that are good for the family and for our country.
Thus, whatever success I have had in bringing clean, informa ve entertainment to people of all
ages, I a ribute in great part to my Congrega onal upbringing and my lifelong habit of prayer. To me,
today, at age sixty-one, all prayer, by humble or highly placed, has one thing in common: supplica on for

strength and inspira on to carry on the best human impulses which should bind us together for a be er
world. Without such inspira on, we would rapidly deteriorate and finally perish. But in our troubled

these privileges only by being on guard and figh ng off encroachment of these precepts. TO TREAT ANY
OF THESE PRINCIPLES HANDED DOWN BY OUR FOREFATHERS, WHO SHED THEIR BLOOD FOR THE IDEAS
WE STILL EMBRACE, WOULD BE COMPLETE VICTORY FOR THOSE WHO WOULD DESTROY LIBERTY AND
JUSTICE FOR THE INDIVIDUAL.

Despite business failure, great personal loss, rejec on, poli cal defeat, tremendous emo onal stress,
family crises and severe financial difficul es, Abraham Lincoln ascended to the highest posi on in this
country: President of the United States.
From log cabin to the White House, from poverty to the presidency, Lincoln faced many obstacles,
poli cal and private, but overcame them by faith and determina on to never give up.
Lincoln has long been remembered for his endurance in the face of adversity. President Roosevelt once

The Author
I read the Proclama on by Lincoln kind of quickly. I then read it a second me. And then I read
it again this me studying this Na onal Day of Fas ng and Prayer. It says so much. I can see why
Lincoln is referred to by many as our greatest president to date. This proclama on, plus so many other
examples during his lifes journey was his understanding of his Greatest Responsibility. He understood
that responsibility, and knew this work would bring him the self-serving things all humans crave for. If
I was a school teacher, a poli cian, clergyman or any type of leader, I would use Lincolns Proclama on
as a valuable tool to teach.
As we review the accomplishments of Mother Teresa, Walt Disney and President Lincoln we can hardly
breathe as we try to gather in such enormous feats. All children of God are born with this innate choice of
Faith, and the ability to rise up to such heights--exceeding all scien fic theory.
The Greatest Story Ever Told
This is a tle of a movie released in 1965 telling the story of Jesus Christ from the me of His infancy to
His resurrec on. The movie was nominated for five academy awards, had a run me of 3 hours and 58
minutes and has been discussed in length for the large size of its cast. Although many religious movies
have had financial success, this movie did not. It had a budget of 20 million dollars and brought in
revenues of only 8 million. My deepest condolences to the producers and George Stevens the director, but
one thing that it did have correct, that it is THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD!
The greatest story ever told you say-why? Going back to a li le about myself, I was raised in the
intercity of Detroit by a single parent (aunt, but always called her mother and always will be mom un l I
meet back up with my birth mother). Sorry to say, but that environment molded me to be very suspicious
in nature. A er surviving 18 years with my homies, ge ng in fights along the way just to protect my $.50
lunch money, I can tell you, I need to see to believe. I was raised in a Muslim house hold with a family
that was American as apple pie. People, who would go to work every day, pay their bills and love their
neighbor. I brought that fact into play because of some of the worldwide issues of today mixing religion
and poli cs. The Marvaso, Italian side of my heritage did well, but unfortunately I never spent much
me with them. I was always drawn to religion and while growing up I would stop at Holy Redeemer
Catholic Church from me to me just to pray. I became Catholic when I was thirty years old because
I wanted to a end a church weekly to pray and show respect for God. I really didnt know anything
about Chris anity, I just wanted to live an American life style and have a place to go where people
worshiped a Supreme Being.
Again, I am pre y much self-centered. I want what I want and I have needs to be met. Ill believe
in something if you can show me results. I gravitate towards things or people, who love me, who will
shelter me, and give all the tools I need to produce RESULTS. Turning to Chris anity was the best thing
I have ever done. Ive come to know Christ, His teachings and understand the value of them and those
results I guarantee.

We have discussed three world renowned Chris ans whose lives have soared far beyond a human
beings natural abili es. How many stories are out there? How many more to come? Yes, we are amazed
when we see the results beyond comprehension. I wonder what Walt is saying now about the 4 billion
dollars Disney just paid for the rights of Star Wars? Maybe hes passing me with the bankers who
said The Mouse Idea will never work by saying You guys want to rethink that now. As amazing as
the stories of Mother Teresa, Walt and Abe are they pale in comparison to the results of Jesus Christ.
To reveal and or remind people of the results of Christ, and what li le he started with, one might say
Ive heard the story before. We hear it every Christmas, Easter and on Sunday mornings. We see it on
television so o en during spor ng events such as the winners and the losers forming a circle kneeling
with prayer a er a football game. Baseball players crossing home plate, jockeys a er finishing a race will
o en use the media tool to express what they are clear to be Their Greatest Responsibility. Steph Curry
of the Golden State Warriors displays his talent while his team a empts to break the all- me most win
record for the NBA. As his 61 body flies through the air amongst the 7 foot giant compe tors, he spins
and shoots. As the basketball falls in the center of the net and scores, Steph lands flat on his feet while
tapping his heart and poin ng to the heavens. He does my soul so much good. America, like so many
other countries that make up the 2 billion Chris ans today live and grow on the teachings of a man who
started and died with so li le. (That was visible).

Father Gerry of St Simon and Jude recharges my faith every Sunday with the Greatest Story Ever Told.
With no hand notes he roams the center of the church telling the stories of the bible in a way that is
so effec ve. He has assisted our family and so many others with his life me commitment to Christ.
Although his homilies remain crea ve, I tell him from me to me You are really good, but youre
ge ng help from the Lord----just like Mother, Walt and Abe.

Again, its just about results! Can you see them? Can you explain them?

The Marvaso connec on for my family goes back years to a me when my three brothers and I would
get together for a guys only birthday dinner.
The Birthday boy was given the honor of picking the Restaurant.
Marvasos became a regular event for us and our families since we came to feel like they were our
extended family.
The passion to please the individual diner was obvious as well as observing how connected to the
Community George and Mary were.
Debby , my wife enjoyed the variety as well as the tradi onal Italian dishes, commen ng that their

Chamber of Commerce where George was an ac ve member. Over the many years I have known George;
his strong personal character has been evident every day. His personal priori es of Family, Faith,

his ac vi es, associa ons and conversa ons.
George is a pillar of the community and reinforces that the descrip on every day. He operated his
business with the same integrity that was always present in his many friendships.

Our friend George Marvaso and his family we have known for many years. He is a very honorable
man with a lot of integrity, what he says he will do-he does. This man will help you when youre down
and out. He always goes out of his way for people. You talk about a true friend, this is the man. He
loves the Lord God and Jesus.
One thing about George he walks it and talks it. He always works in his community. He belongs to our
organiza on (The Westland Lions). The Marvasos help in our fundraising and George has chaired five of
our golf ou ngs which have been very successful. It is an honor to be a friend of his and his family. One
day we feel George will be a great President in our club.
Our hearts go out to him and his family since the fire happened. The struggles and the ba les with
the city and the insurance company are now pushing three years. No one should have to go through this,
but we know they will persevere and rise up.

Ive had the privilege of knowing the Marvaso family for 25 years. I met them while working for a
direct compe tor back in 1991, and by watching them, thats when I started to learn what serving the
community looks like. Over the years, I have watched the Marvaso family give to the community through
not only their business, but any means they had available to them. To me, the Marvasos have always
demonstrated what family really looks like and not just flesh and blood! To be a part of the Marvoso
family is to simply be known and loved by them.
When the fire destroyed their business in 2013, I along with thousands of other people was just heart
broken. To know that the issue has been resolved and to see the family struggling through this 3 years
later is unacceptable. The strength this family has demonstrated and their resolve to get through this is
unprecedented. They are humble, generous people who simply have the desire to be made whole again
and I have faith that they will. I take comfort in knowing they have that kind f faith too!
I believe in my heart that the Marvasos will rebuild in some capacity. I believe this because I believe
God has big plans to prosper them. I know that more than anything, George and Mary want to pass on a
legacy to their children and grandchildren and whether they rebuild or not, I think they already haveA
legacy of love, hope and humility.

I first met George Marvaso in November of 1995. He and I were both nominated for First Ci zen of the
Year in Westland, MI. George received the honor and I was runner-up. I well deserved honor for him! His
gracious treatment of me that night, endeared him to me from that point on.
We became golfing buddies and spent many hours, over the years, discussing life, family, ci zenship
and business. It was during these conversa ons that I got to know George as a kind and wonderful man.
He put service to his community above all except his family and God.
In July, 2010, my son, Ben, died of cancer. The first day at the funeral home, some people showed up
with boxes and boxes of food. George had sent it. It was great food from a great friend, and provided
much comfort to us at a very difficult me. George has always had a knack for being there when people
need him.
I miss seeing the joy in Georges face as he welcomed people to his restaurant, Marvasos. I held
several mee ngs there, over the years, and people s ll talk about the excellent me, great food and
excep onal service they had there. I hope that one day I can again be a guest at Georges restaurant!
