CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA
Monthly Report
Public Works Department
September 2017
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Members
Carmel Beach:
Several smokeless fire pit devices replaced larger, caldron fire pits on Carmel Beach under the Citys Pilot
Fire Program while maintaining a total of nine (9) units. Staff continued with weekday cleaning, monitoring, and
data collection of all City-provided wood fire pits along the beach, and cleaned up remnants of illegal fires.
Note: The City removed the wood fire pits in early October due to high tides and air quality concerns related to
the northern California fires.
North Dunes:
In the North Dunes habitat restoration area, biologist Joey Canepa watered new native dune plants, removed
weeds, and counted the population of endangered Tidestroms lupine. This was a robust year for germination
of Tidestroms lupine with significant increase in population from last year.
Trees:
The Rotary Club of Carmel by-the-Sea planted a New Zealand Christmas tree (Metrosideros excelsa) in front
of the Carmel Youth Center on 4th Avenue between Junipero and Torres. Public Works/Forestry staff and on-
call contractors removed seven (7) dead trees, and staff issued work orders for an additional 37 trees and
associated stumps. John Leys Tree Service continues to water 86 trees planted by the Friends of Carmel
Forest. In addition, West Coast Arborists was awarded a $122,000 contract for additional tree work, and they
will begin tree removals in October.
The Friends of Mission Trail Nature Preserve cleared trails and pruned intruding willows around the Liaolo
Grove and the Rio Road entrance during their monthly work day on September 9th. Contractor, Greenscape,
mowed annual grasses and removed vegetation in the Preserve. Staff consulted with State biologists on
working near dusky-footed woodrat nests to facilitate removal of invasive trees and other vegetation.
Public Works implemented a request from the Friends of Mission Trail Nature Preserve by cleaning, testing,
and relocating a 750-gallon fiberglass water tank. The tank was abandoned long ago in the Lester Rowntree
Garden. By re-using and placing the tank near the Mountain View entryway into the MTNP, it will be put to
good use as a source of non-potable water for watering new vegetation in that area.
