Assessment Process and Purpose

Quick Write Entry-level. Students will write a brief journal entry to begin
thinking of the topics presented in the unit. They will discuss
everything they know about gothic and horror fiction, and
things that come to mind when they hear Frankenstein. This
will be used to gauge what they have learned when they revisit
it at the end of the unit.
Class Discussion Formative. Throughout the unit, the class will have open
discussions led by the teacher. Analytical and evaluative
question strategies will be utilized to guide the discussions.
Participation and student involvement will allow the teacher to
evaluate students strengths and weaknesses in
comprehension.
Character Map Formative. Students will create a character map for Victor
Frankenstein and his creation. They will list appearances,
characteristics, quotes, etc. These will be collected, feedback
will be given, and they will be passed back in order to help the
students with their final papers.
In Class Debate Formative. Students will break into groups to argue why
Victor Frankenstein and his creature are sympathetic
characters. Half of the class will debate in favor of one
character, and the other half for the other character. This will
allow the teacher to evaluate whether the elements
surrounding sympathetic characters have been fully grasped
and understood.
Quiz Formative. Toward the end of the unit, a quiz on gothic
literature will be given to determine student comprehension
before moving on to group presentations and the essay.
Group Summative. Students will create presentations in small
Presentations groups of 3-4 people. Presentations will focus on how nature
and the pursuit of knowledge inform the plot of the novel.
They will be presented to the class with time to discuss each
groups project with their peers for feedback.
Essay Summative. The unit will end with an analytical essay
discussing the characters of the story. The students will use all
resources from the unit to help guide them through their
arguments. This will be the final assessment for the unit.
