Module Overview
This course is designed to learn the basic functionalities of Bentley AECOsim
plumbing Building Designer for Building Information Modeling (BIM). plumbing
Building Designer allows users and system administrators to customize the
delivered data so that you can apply your own company standards, project
Company: Mott-MacDonald
Module Prerequisites
A fundamental knowledge of MicroStation V8i
An understanding of Plumbing design
Basic knowledge and understanding of three dimensional design
DO NOT DISTRIBUTE - Printing for Student Use is Permitted
Module Objectives
After completing this course, you will be able to:
Create three dimensional models of Plumbing systems
Route pipe around the floor plan
Use AccuDraw to accurately place piping within a model
Demonstrate how to use auto fittings
File Organization
Exercise: Create New Design File
1 From the File Manager, set the Workspace to the following:
User: BuildingDesigner
Project: BuildingTemplate_GB
Class Date: 13-Nov-2013
Interface: default
2 Create a new design file - Plumbing.dgn.

Piping
You will now begin to model the Plumbing for the ground floor level that we have
been working with. During the design process, you will use many different
plumbing components to complete the model.
Round Pipe
Flex Pipe
Once the Building Primary dialog has been set you can then select the type of
pipe you wish to place and set its size.
Hint: Remember that the pipe is always placed at the current ACS level when the
locks are active. Different ACS planes can be defined in each view, so ALWAYS
check the active ACS in each view.
Pipe Parameters
When placing piping, the DataGroup Instance Data dialog has the information

needed to control width, depth, end type, and other property information, such
as material and insulation.
When changing a pipe to a smaller or larger size during your routing, Building
Designer will automatically place a transition piece. Fittings, such as elbows, will
automatically be placed when routing pipes at angles.
When placing a pipe, the Tool Settings allow you to match attributes of existing
pipe work.
Part/Family - When on, part and family definitions of the selected component
are assigned to the new component.

Size - When on, the new component aligns with the end of the selected
component.
Shape - When on, the new component is automatically sized to match the end
of the selected component.
Exchange - When on, replaces an existing component with the active
component.
Use Fence - When on, all existing component in the fence are replaced with

the active component. The option menu sets the Fence (Selection) Mode.
Apply Slope - When on, applies the last set slope settings to the component
being placed in the route.
You also have the ability to set the placement position (Justification) of a pipe
when placing them in the model. Selecting the Justification Button will reveal the
available placement points.
3 Note that you can adjust the size or shape of the pipe while in the
command and any required transitions will be inserted automatically.

You can set the properties for the default fitting that Building Designer uses when

inserting an elbow or transition onto a pipe. The default fittings can be set to a
specific radius as well as the end lengths.
To set the Default AutoFitting option for pipe chose the Elbow tool from the
Plumbing Design Task.
In the DataGroup Instance Data box, right click and chose Set As Default
AutoFitting Option. Any properties you have set (radius, Length 1, End Type,
etc.) will be used next time an Elbow is inserted in a run of pipe.

Place more pipe. Notice that the elbows that are automatically inserted are
using the autofitting options defined above.

You can define the end type for pipe as an AutoFitting as well.

Stretch Pipe
The Stretch Pipe command works similarly to the Building Designer Extend Line
command. You can add length by extending an existing member or by adding a
new member adjoining an existing member.
Break Pipe
Break pipe is very similar to the Building Designer Partial Delete tool; it will break
a length of pipe into two sections. Each pipe becomes its own individual element
and retains its own intelligence.
In addition to breaking a pipe into two sections, it can also break a long run of
pipe into standard lengths. This is especially helpful when laying out exact lengths

Join Tool
This is commonly used to join two previously placed pieces of piping. Depending
on the circumstances, individual fittings or a combination of fittings can be
inserted when the pipes are joined together.
Join pipe can also be used to join 2 pipes of different sizes. A take off will be

Move Component
This command gives the user the ability to dynamically move a plumbing
component and all connected components, while maintaining their connectivity.
Modify Component
DO NOT DISTRIBUTE - Printing for Student Use is Permitted
The Modify Component command is found in the Main Building Tools. It is used
to modify pipe fittings and fitting instance data. DataGroup System information is
modified in the heads up display view or in the DataGroup Instance Data dialog
during the modify operation.
When modifying a pipe length, you can change the size, type and the justification.
2 The DataGroup Instance Data box will appear along with an isolated
Heads-Up Display view of the component being modified.
Class Date: 13-Nov-2013
Company: Mott-MacDonald
3 You can make changes to the dimensions of the pipe in the DataGroup
Instance Data box or by directly selecting the dimension in the Heads-Up
Display.
4 Left click in the view to commit your changes.

5 You will notice that the rest of the branch line needs to be resized to
match the new pipe dimensions. To do this Use the AccuDraw shortcut RS
to resize the entire branch line.

When placing a fitting you may edit any of the DataGroup parameters; examples
are if you need to change a manufacturer's name, an elbow angle, or a transition
size.
When placing a fitting such as an elbow, the fitting tool will automatically launch
the Modify Fitting tool during the placement workflow. After a parameter has
been entered, and a datapoint accepts, the tool will reset.
The DataGroup Instance Data dialog allows you to control the size and properties
of the object that you are placing as well as all properties about the selected
object.

Modify Component
The Modify Component command is used to modify any plumbing component.
Modify Component is found in the Main Building Tools. DataGroup System
information is modified in the heads up display view or in the DataGroup Instance
Data dialog during the modify operation.
To view a report of the existing items in our model we will use the DataGroup
Explorer.
Class Date: 13-Nov-2013
The DataGroup Explorer allows the user to sort the Catalog Types by All, Used
and Selection Set.

Selecting the individual Catalog Types will bring up a list of those components
currently placed in the model.
