II. ABSTRACT

Hydration is imperative for optimal performance for all athletes. Athletes who develop a systematic method
of ensuring they are consistently hydrated have better recovery and higher energy levels. When an athlete is
adequately hydrated, their body is able to transport nutrients and oxygen to working muscles and aid muscle
repair, remove lactic acid build up, eliminate nitrogenous waste and regulate body temperature. Losing as little
as two percent of body weight through sweat can impair an athletes ability to perform due to a low blood
volume and less than optimal utilization of nutrients and oxygen.

Sports drinks have been researched extensively and generally provide an excellent alternative to plain water
for hard working athletes. During intensive aerobic exercise, the bodys preferred source of fuel is
carbohydrate (rather than protein or fat) due to the efficiency of energy transfer to fatigued muscles. The
majority of sports drinks are formulated to deliver carbohydrates, electrolytes and fluids in such a way that
will minimize stomach upset and maximize intestinal absorption for delivery of energy to muscles.

INTRODUCTION
Sports drinks are beverages whose stated purpose is to help athletes replace water, electrolytes, and energy
before and after training or competition, though their efficacy for that purpose has been
questioned,[1][2] particularly after exercise.
Sports drinks can be split into three major types: Isotonic sport drinks contain similar concentrations of salt and
sugar as in the human body.

Hypertonic sport drinks contain a higher concentration of salt and sugar than the human body.
Hypotonic sport drinks contain a lower concentration of salt and sugar than the human body.
Most sports drinks are approximately isotonic, having between 4 and 5 heaped teaspoons of sugar per five
ounce (13 and 19 grams per 250ml) serving.
