PARAMETRIC STUDIES ON CABLE STAYED

BRIDGES

OBJECTIVE:
In the Parametric study on cable stayed bridges, aim is to investigate the
individual influence of different source of nonlinearity in bridges. The sources
of nonlinearity in cable stayed bridge mainly include large deflection, beam-
column and cable sag effects. The influence of such kind of effects on the
analysis and the structural behaviour of cable stayed bridges have to be study.
The nonlinear analysis of cable stayed bridges are perform using finite element
package and detailed parametric studies for initial shape analysis and static
deflection analysis of bridges have to be perform.

Jos J. Oliveira Pedro _, Antnio J. Reis.(2010).Nonlinear analysis of
composite steel_concrete cable-stayed bridges.

They performed the nonlinear analysis of composite steel_concrete cable-

stayed bridges. The composite deck and the concrete towers are modeled by
three node/7dof steel and concrete frame elements, shear connection of the
deck is modeled using continuous spring elements. Geometrical and material
nonlinear behaviours of both steel and concrete materials are considered.
Cable's sag and time dependent effects due to load history, creep, shrinkage
and aging of concrete are also considerd in the analysis. The main sources of
nonlinearity are evaluated for a 420mmain span composite cable-stayed
bridge, under service conditions. The failure load and the failure mechanism
are also analysed, both at the end of construction and at long term. The
influence of the following factors is studied: (1) deck load pattern, (2) time
dependent effects, (3) cables' yielding and ``cable-out'' effect, (4) existence of
intermediate piers at the lateral spans, (5) effective slab width, and (6)
flexibility of the shear connection.

Wadee.(2015) Dynamic behaviour of steelconcrete composite under-
deck cable-stayed bridges under the action of moving loads.

The dynamic response of under-deck cable-stayed bridges with steel

concrete composite decks under moving loads is studied. They identified the
vibrational modes with a strong contribution in the response, the key
parameters that control the modal frequencies, and those that reduce the
maximum accelerations registered on the deck in a cost-effective manner. In
the study they found that relatively high accelerations occur and that these can
be increased by large load eccentricities. It is also found that maximum
accelerations are conditioned by the amplification and cancellation speeds of
the loads. Increasing the depth of the deck is determined to be the most
effective way to reduce the maximum accelerations. Decks formed by I-beams
seem to be quite appropriate from the perspective of dynamic behaviour,
while box sections tend to increase the overall cost of the bridge. The findings
provide effective strategies to define the most efficient configurations that
satisfy the limit state of vibrations, which is critical for this type of bridge.

nonlinearities on the static analysis of highly flexible steel cable-stayed
bridges

They evaluated the importance of geometrically nonlinear effects on the

structural static analysis of steel cable-stayed bridges, by comparing the results
provided by a number of finite element based analyses of a cable-stayed
bridge. There are three main sources of geometrically nonlinear behavior of
cable-stayed bridges: the beam-column effect, the large displacements (known
as PD) effect and the cable sag effect. A finite element model is analyzed
using linear, pseudo-linear and nonlinear methods. The pseudo-linear
approach is based on the modified elastic modulus. The results confirm that
both cable sag and large displacement originate the most important nonlinear
effects in those structures. Beam column effects are irrelevant for service
loads.

Caia.(2013). Experimental and numerical investigation on the static
and dynamic behaviors of cable-stayed bridges with CFRP cables.

In this study, carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) cables in cable-stayed

bridges is studied in terms of their static and dynamic behaviors. both
experimental inspection and numerical simulation were conducted on an
existing short-span CFRP cable-stayed bridge to validate the reliability and
feasibility of the finite element model. The verified model was employed to
simulate an existing 648m-span cable-stayed bridge with steel cables and
replace them by CFRP cables for comparison. The results showed that the
static and dynamic properties of cable-stayed bridges are significantly
influenced by the nonlinear effects. The results of displacements calculated
between CFRP and steel cables are close to each other in case a when we
neglect the cable lagging effect and consider the effects of big deformation
and beam-column interaction. The differences are significant in one case
when consider the cable lagging effect and ignore the effects of big
deformation and beam-column interaction. The nonlinear effects on dynamic
performance of cable-stayed bridge is smaller than that on static performance.
The use of CFRP cables improves the fundamental frequency of bridge. The
fundamental frequency, torsional frequency and the ratio of torsional
frequency to bending frequency also increased significantly by use of CFRP
cables instead of steel.
