SERIES-R

PART 1 Subject: Aircraft Radio Equipment.

1)What does rule 57 and 9(3) state?

Aircraft Rule 57 requires that every aircraft shall be fitted and equipped with radio
apparatus.CAR Series I, Part II lays down the minimum radio equipment which is
required to be installed on an aircraft

2)What are the requirements to use radio equipment?

(i)It should be of the type approved by the DGCA

(ii)It should be installed and operated with a licence issued under the Indian Telegraph Act of
1885

(iii)It should be maintained at all times in good order and condition

(iv)It should be operated only by a person who holds an approved valid licence

(v)It should not tobe operated in flight(*except in case of flight test) unless it has been
inspected and certified as being in proper working order by a person authorised by the DGCA.

PART 2 Subject: Installation of Communication, Navigation and Radar Equipment.

*)Any new avionic installation or replacement of existing installation

shall be carried out after development of Supplemental Type
Certificate (STC). The developed STC shall be accepted or approved by
DGCA as appropriate.

1)What should be ensured by the operator before applying for approval

to the dgca?

For grant of approval from DGCA proposal shall be made through local Airworthiness Office
after ensuring the following.

(i) The proposed equipment is of the approved type

(ii) Necessary electrical power is available in the aircraft for the proposed equipment.

(iii)Required space is available at suitable location in the aircraft

(iv) C.G. should remain within the limits

(v) There is no radio interference due to installation of the new equipment

The operator shall prepare the schedule of the above tests based on the guidelines contained in
the BCAR Section R and FAA Advisory Circular AC 43-13 and forward it to the local
Airworthiness office for approval

After completion of proposed installation or replacement work testing of the system shall be
accomplished only after obtaining short term aero mobile license for operating radio apparatus
from WPC Wing of Ministry of Communications

*)Requirement to apply for license to WPC are four copies of

prescribed form,C of R and fees .

PART 3 Subject: Maintenance of Airborne Communication, Navigation and Radar Equipment

*)Based on the approved maintenance program, the operator/ AMO is

required to prepare inspection schedules including COSL, which are
approved by the Head of Engineering Department or a designated
person of the operator/ AMO

*)There are two types of inspections

(i)in-situ

(ii)bench check

*)All defects, reported by the pilot or engineering staff which are

observed during scheduled inspection, on aircraft communication,
navigation and radar system, must be properly attended and
endorsement made in the relevant Pilots defect report book / Off -Job
Sheet / appropriate Log Book.

*)The Ame shall issue Certificate of Release to Service in accordance

with CAR Section 2 Series F Part VIII and also make relevant entries
in the aircraft log book/ component history cards

*)Separate history card shall be maintained for all major equipment

having serial number, to indicate hours done, installation history
including major modifications carried out with proper reference to
manufacturers Service Bulletins/ airworthiness directives etc
*)In absence of manufacturers recommendation, all ELTs installed on
the aircraft shall be inspected within 12 calendar months

*)Equipments like Weather Radar, VLF, Omega NAV, GNSS, Radio

Altimeter, DME, ATC, ACAS / TCAS Processor, CVR and RNAV shall be
checked in-situ

*)Final test data (FTD-given by manufacturer)checks should be carried

out in accordance with the Component Maintenance Manual (CMM)/
Avionics System Manual

PART 4 Subject: INSTALLATION OF MODE 'A' / 'C' AND MODE S TRANSPONDERS.

*) Minimum Safe Altitude Warning (MSAW)

*)all aeroplanes shall be equipped with a pressure-altitude reporting

transponder which operates in accordance with the relevant provision
of Annex10,Vol.IV

*)Air Navigation Planning and Implementation Regional Group

(APANPIRG)

*)Air Traffic Control Radar Beacon System (ATCRBS)

*)Mode S Transponder is a source of reliable air space surveillance

*)refer definitions in series r part 4 pg 2

1)Explain the requirements of dgca to fit transponder in the aircraft?

(a) an aeroplane having a maximum certified passenger seating configuration of 20 to 30 or a

maximum certificated take off mass in excess of 5700kg, if such aeroplane is not equipped with
Mode 'S' transponder.

(b) an aeroplane having a maximum certified passenger seating configuration of 10 to 19 and a

maximum certificated take off mass less than 5700kg, if such aeroplane is not equipped with
Mode A / C transponder .

(c) a twin jet engined aeroplane having a maximum certified passenger seating configuration of
less than 10 and a maximum certificated take off mass less than 5700kg,if such aeroplane is not
equipped with Mode A /C transponder.

(d) a helicopter if it is not equipped with Mode A / C transponder

*)The addresses composed of 24 ZEROS or 24 ONES shall not be
assigned to aircraft

*)Aircraft fitted with Mode S transponder will be provided with Mode

S address by DGCA which consists of a total of 24 bits. The first six
bits indicate the country code and the remaining 18 bits give the Mode
S address. The code allotment shall be as given below:

<-- (6 bits) ----> <----- (18 bits) ---------

Country Code Mode S Address for India

*)The transponder shall be of approved type and meet the

specifications given in TSOC74 C for Mode A/C transponder and
TSO-C112 for Mode S transponder or any other specifications
acceptable to DGCA.

*)Engineers inspecting/certifying transponder should be licences

under category "R" or "V" or "B2".

PART 5 Subject :Control of Electromagnetic interference in modern aircraft.

1)what does rule 57(2) state?

2)Sub rule 2 of Aircraft Rule 57 states that instrument and equipment including Radio
equipment installed on aircraft shall be maintained in a serviceable condition

DEFINITION:

ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE (EMI) can be defined as undesirable

voltage or currents which affect a system.

*)When the susceptibility threshold level is greater than the

conducted or radiated emission level, electromagnetic interference
problems do not exist. This situation is called
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)

*)A very common unit in the measurement of electomagnetic

interference is the decibel (db).

*)(Fault Isolation Manual and BITE Manual)maintenance of EMC
