Colby Green:
Over the past week, a scenario was presented to the students of a PAP Biology class in
which they had to analyze the stomach contents of a murder victim. Below are their
results and observations from this experiment.
Conclusion:
This experiment taught these students about the job of a lab scientist whenever
detectives need answers after a murder or the like. These are the diverse multitude of
tests which the lab scientists use to analyze what the victim has ingested. These tests
can be used to either find lethal toxins (which would likely be the cause of death), or, as
in this case, determine where the victim had their last meal, and possibly where the
crime took place. This type of work occurs daily and is largely kept secret. This
experiment showed positive Sudan IV and Biuret tests. These tests hinted toward the
presence of proteins and lipids, although nothing is certain at this point. Negative tests
included both carbohydrate tests, hinting that carbohydrates werent present within the
stomach contents, although again, this isnt necessarily true. In all, these students
enjoyed the experiment, but must of all, learned to only speak for the evidence.
