The novel that I have learnt is dear mr kilmer by anne scraff. There were several pognant scenes
throughout the novel but the event that taught me the most was richard giving up his role as
doughboy in the school play.

The event plays out just as hannah drops out of her role as Lady Liberty in the same play as she was
a victim at racism by classmates like harry and abner. They felt her portrayal of the role would be
unpatriotic as hannah comes from Germany lineage or a Hun as they call her. She had faced
racism at several points throughout the novel but it culminated in her being forced to forge the role
in order to prevent further conflict. Richrd tehn decided to quit his role as well and I found this
meaningful for several reasons.

The first lesson I have learnt fom this event Is to never succumb to prejudice and discrimation.
Richard understood that hannahs decision come from an almostresigned sense of submission into
the racist narrative. Richard also knew that by accpeting the role, it would mean agreeing to it as
well and allowing has moral principles to be compromised by his racist classmates. In a gesture of
defiance, he then also drops out of the role becouse stay silent meant to stand with the bigots in his
class and exile hannah simply because of her hertage. Richard sacrificed role he was vying for in
order to prove a point aboit accpetance and tolerance of all races. I think that is a very brave and
inspriring thing to do .

In addition to that, I hv learnt that the importance of supporting a friend when they are facing
difficulties. Richard and hannah had not been friends for long befire the even happened and had
spoken only a few times prior. How ever, this event marked a start of a blossomly friendship
between the two. This is because richard was the only person to have supported hannah in her
decision to hfdjd the role. Richard might have had his qualmes with the decision but ultimately, he
supported any decision his friend made in regards to the issue. Knowing her decision would cause
more gossip by his classmates, richard decided to stand in solidarity with her and help her through
the difficult period. This showed hannah the extent of richards royalty and kindness. This made
their friendship stronger than it ever was before. This kind of support is vital in maintaing a
friendship in life.

The last lesson I have learnt is not to conform to peer pressure. As a student, it is very easy to get
caught up in public perception and not have solid pronciples in life. However, richards decision
proves the importance of having our own mind irrespective of what other people may think.
Richard was called a hun sumpathizes by his brolter follow me his decision to drop out but knew it
was the honest and justifiedthisng to do. He did not care about what other ppl thought of him but a
sense inspired the readers to prevere and not give in to bullies and racist people, even if they are
your friends. Throught the event,I have learnt many valuable lessons that I will cherish throughtout
like. I now know the significance of standing up to what is right, to stand with my friends and not
give in to peer preesure. Ihope to pass on these lessons through my actions in school and imspire
other students to do the same.

Based on the novel dear mr kilmer written by anne scraff, there was many events that taught us
lessons abt life so that the readers can learn from the novel.

In my opinion, I think there was one main event that had taught me valuable lessons about life. The
incident when hannah and richard were chosen as winners for the essay writing competition and
got picked for the roles of lady liberty and doughboy.
First of all, I hv learnt that we should be brave to stand up for what is right. There was an evident
when richards english teacher, mrs hansen selected hannah and richard to play the rolw of lady
liberty and doughboy. She stood her ground when choosing them as winners for the essay riting
competitions knowing that there would be backlash from other people. Even after .. hannah and
richard gave up their roles, she chose mildred as lady liberty instead of peggy. She was fair enough
as she did not make the essay writing contest into a popularity contest.

2nd. We should not discriminate others because of their roots or background. For instance, hannah
had to gave up her role as lady liberty despite winning the essay writing contest fair and square.
This is due to the protest from her classmates saying that she was unpatriotic german, even the
parents of other classmates came to school to meet the principal as they were unsatisfied with mrs
hansens decision to choose hannah as lady liberty. Their acts should not be tolerate as it is not fair
to discriminate people based on their roots because we are still human.

In addition to that, we should always support our friends during their rimes of In need or
difficulties. Thisis evident when richard was the only one who cheered for hannah when she read
her essay in front of the classfor the essay writingcompetition. Also, richard showed his support to
hannah by declining his role as douhboy when hannah gave up on being lady liberty. Richard felt
that it was unfair to hannah. Eventhough, he was being critisedand accused of being unpatriotic by
doing that, he still supported hannah by backing down on his decisions.
