BARNABAS AND SAUL ARE SENT OUT
Acts 13:1-12
While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, Set apart
for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them. (2)
First, the Holy Spirit calls Barnabas and Saul (1-3). Chapter 13 marks
a turning point in the book of Acts, focusing on the spread of the gospel
to Gentiles more than Jews. Not surprising then, this work began at the
church in Antioch, the first Gentile church. It was there that the Holy
Spirit called Barnabas and Saul for this important task. Notably, this call
came while they were worshiping the Lord. With their hearts right before
him, they were ready when he spoke. It also teaches us an important les-
son relevant even today, that is, Gods best workers are first worshipers
of him.
Second, preaching on Cyprus (4-12). Not far from Antioch was the
island of Cyprus, which is where Saul and Barnabas began their mis-
sionary journey. Although they started preaching first in the synagogues,
there is no recorded fruit of this endeavor (5). However, despite opposition
(8), they were successful in preaching the gospel to the Roman proconsul
in Paphos (12). This was no small matter, since he was in a position of
great influence. With this one act, the ministry to the Gentiles began to
grow and move forward.
Lord, give us hearts to worship and serve you that we may hear your voice and
answer your call.

First, Jonah prayed even when angry (1-3). Jonahs ministry was fruit-

Second, the lesson of the vine (4-11). God taught Jonah compassion

people may be blessed. God provided a worm, which killed the vine in

MAKE A COVENANT BEFORE OUR GOD
Ezra 10:1-44
Now honor the LORD, the God of your ancestors, and do his will. Separate
yourselves from the peoples around you and from your foreign wives. (11)
First, there is still hope for Israel (1-11). Ezra was not the only one
who wept because of his peoples unfaithfulness. A large crowd gathered
around him and also wept. Shekaniah believed there was still hope in
God. He suggested sending away all the foreign women and their children.
Ezra agreed and put the leaders under oath to carry this out. A national
assembly was called. Anyone who failed to appear would be expelled. The
people all gathered and were greatly distressed because of the occasion
and the rain. Ezra called on the people to honor the LORD and separate
themselves from their foreign wives. Their destructive sin required radical
repentance and commitment to God.
Second, we must do as you say (12-44). Most of the assembly agreed
and was ready to repent. A few opposed. Within several months, they
finished dealing with this. The priests descendants who had married
foreign women were listed. The sin was widespread and because they
were the spiritual leaders, their influence was particularly bad.
Lord, please raise spiritual leaders who are fully devoted to you and obey you.
Give us a repentant and humble heart.
