Semester Conversion Guidelines

Most of the quarter courses have direct equivalents in the semester system. However, some courses merge.
The following table summarizes merged courses and their equivalencies in the ECE department.

Semester Course Quarter Equivalent
(# of semester units)
1101 (3) All of 109 & first half of 207
1101L (1) All of 109L & first half of 207L
2101 (3) Second half of 207 & all of 209
2101L (1) Second half of 207L & all of 209L
2200 (3) All of 220 & part of 325
2200L (1) All of 220L & part of 325L
3101 (3) All of 306 & part of 307

The merged courses fall under three categories, Electric Circuit Analysis Sequence, Electronics Sequence, and
Signals and Systems Sequence. The following pages contain plans to help you navigate these sequences and
smoothly transition into the Semester system.

If you plan on graduating after semester conversion (i.e. during or after Fall 2018), you may use either the
Quarter curriculum you are currently following or the new Semester curriculum in effect the year you
graduate. The plans below apply to both cases.

Semester or Quarter, which one should I choose?
When making a decision, you should take in consideration the new required courses and the total number of
units needed. We have prepared draft equivalency tables to help you make an informed decision. Note these
are drafts.

2. Electrical Engineering 4 Year Semester Road Map with Quarter Equivalencies
CpE Majors
3. Computer Engineering 4 Year Quarter Road Map with Semester Equivalencies
4. Computer Engineering 4 Year Semester Road Map with Quarter Equivalencies

How do I use these tables?
If you are an EE major planning to graduate on the Quarter curriculum you are currently following, use Table 1
(EE 4 Year Quarter Road Map with Semester Equivalencies); this table lists the current quarter courses and the
equivalent semester courses you need to take to satisfy the course requirement. For example, if you need to
take ECE 341/L in Fall 2018, look for the semester equivalent in the table (ECE 3301/L) and register for it.

Similarly, if you are an EE major planning to graduate on the semester curriculum, use Table 2 (EE 4 Year
Semester Road Map with Quarter Equivalencies); this table lists all required semester courses and the quarter
courses they replace. For example, if you need to take ECE 3810, look for the quarter equivalent (ECE 310). If
you have passed this course, you have credit for ECE 3810 and you do not need to take it again.

EE & CpE majors
If you have started and not completed all of the courses and labs in the sequence (109/L, 207/L, 209/L) follow
the graphs and/or one of the options listed below.

Electronics Sequence (ECE 220/L, ECE 320/L, ECE 330, ECE 325/L)
EE majors
The following lecture and laboratory courses will be viewed as equivalents and can be used as prerequisites
for subsequent courses.
ECE 220, ECE 299 (Semester 2200), ECE 2200
ECE 220L, ECE 299L (Semester 2200L), ECE 2200L
If you have completed ECE 220 (or the 299 equivalent), take ECE 330 before semester conversion

CpE majors
ECE 220/L and ECE 325/L merge into ECE 2200/L, if you have started and not completed all of the courses and
labs in the sequence follow one of the options listed below. (It is possible that ECE 325/L might be offered in
Summer 2018)

Signals and Systems Sequence (ECE 306/L, ECE 307)
EE majors
You have to complete ECE 306, ECE 306L, and ECE 307 to get credit for ECE 3101/L.
If you have completed either ECE 306 or ECE 307 try to complete the other before semester conversion.
