The alarm and control system is shown in Fig. 2-4. The functions of the
alarm and control circuit are as follows:
Loopback control
MS-AIS generation
Alarm indication and reporting functions are provided with the IDU.
Summary alarm indicators using LEDs are provided for the ODU and
IDU, separately. ODU alarms detected by the alarm detection circuit in
the ODU are sent to the CTRL module in the IDU. This causes the ODU
alarm indicator on the IDU front panel to turn on. Similarly, any IDU
related alarms that are detected will cause the IDU alarm indicator on the
IDU front panel to turn on. External reporting of alarms is also provided
through closed relay contacts accessible via the front panel interface (see
Table 2-3).

ROI-S03895 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The IDU is provided with the automatic laser shutdown (ALS) function
that can be enabled or disabled. If the ALS function is enabled, the laser
output is periodically turned ON and OFF when the optical cable carrying
the STM-1 signal is disconnected inadvertently, or internationally during
maintenance. If the ALS function is disabled, the laser output is always
ON even if the optical cable is disconnected.
Fig. 2-5 shows a block diagram of the ALS function. If a fault occurs at
point A and the absence of the optical input signal in the RX 2 lasts for 550
50 msec (STM-1 LOS alarm condition), the optical signal bound for the
RX 1 (MUX equipment) from the TX 2 (OPT INTFC module) is
interrupted by a control signal generated inside the OPT INTFC module.
The MUX equipment detects the loss of signal at RX1 and the ALS
function in the MUX will, subsequently, turn off the laser output of TX1.
When the fault at point A is cleared the system can be restored by
controlling the laser output of TX2 through one of the following modes:
Automatic control

The loopback function is provided for checking the system quality during
maintenance and/or to quickly isolate a fault location. The control is
performed by the LCT, the PNMT or the PNMS.
Note: In system using 10/100BASE-T INTFC module, it cannot isolate a
fault location by Loopback.

ROI-S03895 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
Far-end link down control provides two kinds of functions for 10/
100BASE-T INTFC. One is to automatically stop the output from the
LAN port to alert the equipment connected with the LAN port when the
system has been disconnected by the fault in the radio section. The other is
to transmit the information for cutting the link interconnected with the
LAN port in the opposite station when the link between the LAN port and
equipment is faulty. This function can be selected by setting
Provisioning on LCT to Enable or Disable .

For example, at the station A, when the Pasolink+ equipment detects the
STM-1 input loss of signal (LOS) and/or loss of frame (LOF), the
information is transmitted to the station B by using RFCOH. When the
station B detects the information, Pasolink+ equipment stops the STM-1
output signal. Similarly, it is the same even if a receiving input level down
or loss of radio frame (LOF) appear in station B.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION ROI-S03895
When both the No. 1 and No. 2 channels are in normal operating
condition, the STM-1 data stream from the associated MUX equipment are
sent to the receiving end through the No. 1 and No. 2 channels. At the
receiving end, the output data streams of the No. 1 and No. 2 channels
MODEM enter the HL SW. The data signal selected by HL SW is fed to
associated MUX equipment.
At the receiving end, when the low bit error alarm (LOW BER ALM) is
detected in the MODEM of the No. 1 channel, the alarm signal is sent to
the switch control logic circuit on the CTRL module. The switch control
logic circuit send the HL SW control signal to the 150M INTFC, OPT
INTFC or 10/100BASE-T INTFC module. Then, the HL SW selects the
data signal from No.2 channel. The switching condition is shown on the
RX1 and RX2 STATUS indicators on the IDU.
2-38
ROI-S03895 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
When both the No. 1 and No. 2 channels are in normal operating
condition, the STM-1 data signal from the associated MUX equipment are
sent to the No. 1 and No. 2 channel ODUs through the No. 1 and No. 2
channel IDUs. Here, either of the No. 1 or No. 2 channel signal is selected
at the TX switch on the ODU and fed to the receiving end. At the receiving
end, the output data signal of the No. 1 and No. 2 channels MODEM enter
the HL SW on the 150M INTFC, OPT INTFC or 10/100BASE-T INTFC
module. The data signal selected by HL SW is fed to associated MUX
equipment.
The following explains the protection switching function in the 1+1 Twin-
path and HS system.
(a) TX Switching
TX switching in HS system is accomplished by muting the TX
output power of either No.1 or No.2 channel ODU. Two types of
TX switch controls are provided: automatic switching that is
initiated by detection of a failure in the transmit section of the
MODEM or ODU, and manual switching that is initiated by the
operator using the LCT. TX switching, either initiated manually or
automatically, may cause a short interruption of the data.
Automatic and manual TX switching have the following
operational characteristics:
Switching Mode: 1. Manual switching
2. Automatic switching
Switching Priority: 1. Non-priority (Non-homing)
2. Priority No.1
2-39
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION ROI-S03895
(b) RX Switch
RX switching in 1+1 Twin-path/HS system is performed by the HL
SW on the 150M INTFC, OPT INTFC or 10/100BASE-T INTFC
module.
Two types of RX switch controls are provided: automatic
switching that is initiated by the quality deterioration of the
received signal and manual switching that is initiated by the
operator using the LCT.
The switching mode and switching priority for automatic and
manual switching are identical to those of TX switching.
However, the switching priority is only valid under automatic
switching control. This is because automatic switching is
implemented by hardware logic and manual switching is
implemented by software logic. That is, automatic switching and
manual switching are completely independent and separate
operations. Thus, when the operator reverts to automatic
switching after performing manual switching, the channel will be
re-selected by the switch control logic circuit.
Operational conditions for the automatic and manual switching are
same with those for the TX switch. System quality deterioration is
set to "LOW BER FOR RX SW" in the provisioning configuration.
Setting values are as follows (default setting is 3 10-7):
3E-6 (3X 10-6)
3E-7 (3X 10-7)
3E-8 (3X 10-8)
3E-9 (3X 10-9)
3E-10 (3X 10-10)
3E-11 (3X 10-11)
3E-12 (3X 10-12)
The power to the ODU is supplied through the coaxial cable which is also
used for the IF and other signals. The DC-DC CONV module of the ODU
produces +7/+9/+10 and 15 V DC power for the component modules
from the 43 V DC power supplied from the IDU.

SUBSYSTEM DESCRIPTION ROI-S03895
10/100BASE-T Interface
The 10/100BASE-T INTFC module is an interface board with two
independent bridge functions. The IEEE802.3 frame signal (10BASE-T/
100BASE-TX) received from external equipment enters the 10/100BASE-
T INTFC module. By a bridge function, the destination (media access
control (MAC) address) in the 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX signal is
identified to determine whether it is relayed. Data signal passed after this
judgment is once stored in the frame buffer circuit. Then, data stored is
read from the frame buffer circuit, and mapped* into STM-1 frame. Data
mapped is multiplexed with RSOH byte such as frame synchronization
byte, B1 parity byte, etc. to generate the STM-1 frame. STM-1 data
generated is fed to MODEM module.
3-6
ROI-S03895 SUBSYSTEM DESCRIPTION
Modulator
At the Modulator, input data signal from 150M INTFC, OPT INTFC or 10/
100BASE-T INTFC module is speed converted to give time slot for the
redundant bits such as radio frame complementary overhead (RFCOH)
and forward error correction (FEC), which are to be added in the next
stages. Then the RFCOH bits are inserted to the pre allocated slots.
RFCOH is a signal multiplexed with OW, 64k SC and SV for monitor/
control. Error correction FEC bits for the radio link are inserted, and
coded, then string-converted to obtain data stream required for
modulation. Data signal string-modulated will modulate the 340 MHz IF
signal, then fed to the ODU INTFC module.
The 140 MHz IF signal and the control signal that are contained in the
composite signal received from the ODU are separated at the MPX section
of the ODU INTFC module. After correcting for characteristic
deterioration and signal level degradation that may have been introduced
by the cable connecting the IDU and ODU, the 140 MHz IF signal is fed to
the MODEM module.
The 140 MHz IF signal from the ODU INTFC module is demodulated at
the demodulator section, then regenerates the baseband signal composed
of the radio frame. After the radio frame synchronization is established,
detection and correction of errors that may have occurred at the radio link
are performed in the error correction section. The STM-1 signal is
regenerated after separating the RFCOH bits and then fed to the 150M
INTFC, OPT INTFC or 10/100BASE-T module.
3-7
SUBSYSTEM DESCRIPTION ROI-S03895
10/100BASE-T Interface
The STM-1 signal received from the MODEM module enters the 10/
100BASE-T INTFC module. Signal received is established the STM-1
frame synchronization, and RSOH byte multiplexed in the transmit side is
detached to extract frame synchronizatiion byte and B1 parity byte. Also,
B1 parity is detected for performance monitoring in the radio link. Data
signal detached is once stored in the frame buffer circuit. Data signal read
from the frame buffer circuit is formatted to the IEEE802.3 frame signal
and output from each port.
OUTDOOR UNIT
The composition and functional operation of the ODU are described in this
chapter.
3.3 Composition
The ODU is classified into high grade (HG) and super high grade (SHG)
types. HG is used for 32 QAM system and SHG for 32/128 QAM system.
The label attached to the side of ODU indicates ODU type (see Fig. 3-3).

ROI-S03898 CORRECTIVE MAINTENANCE
5. CORRECTIVE MAINTENANCE
Corrective maintenance done in the field is described in this chapter.
Corrective maintenance in the field covers fault isolation, module/unit
replacement and alignment. The fault location procedures describes how
to isolate module-level/unit-level faults.
The faults that cause deterioration in the transmission quality are primarily
originated by changes occurred in the state of propagation. Therefore, if a
decline in the transmission quality or similar fault takes place frequently,
the link design will have to be reviewed.
The following 3 methods are available for checking the details of a fault:
Meter readings
Loopback.
5-1
CORRECTIVE MAINTENANCE ROI-S03898
(c) Loopback
When there is an interruption of signals, use the STM/SONET
analyzers and isolate the faulty part by checking the passage of the
STM-1 signal by loopback. Locate the fault by using the
following diagrams.
Enter Selection : 2
5-2
ROI-S03898 CORRECTIVE MAINTENANCE
Control
Control items can be selected only under maintenance mode. As this
Control is likely to cause disconnection of signal, take care during
operation.
RF Frequency
Sets the transmitting and receiving RF frequencies.
TX mute
Turns off/disables the transmitter output.
CW
Used for outputting a clean carrier wave (CW). Used to confirm the
transmitting output power and frequency stability.
IF loopback
Used for localizing equipment failure to ODU or IDU. The input
STM-1 signal from MUX is looped back at IF stage. If no
abnormality is found in the signal after IF loopback, it is assumed that
the ODU has a problem.

A maximum of 11 relays can be defined to provide parallel
alarm outputs. The alarms that would cause RL1 to RL3 to
be triggered are pre-assigned while the alarms that would
cause RL4 to RL11 to be triggered can be selected for each
relay. It is also possible to define RL8 to RL11 as HK CONT
outputs instead of alarm outputs as shown in the table below.
If RL8 to RL11 are not assigned as HK CONT outputs, they
may be used as alarm outputs (see Table 2-2, chapter 2 in
