Internal Conflict
The Republic of Korea is concerned with the insufficient efforts of the United Nation
Security Council to eliminate the global threat we are currently facing. Just recently, North
Korea had launched its sixth nuclear weapon which is more widely known as the hydrogen
bomb. This action is not only a threat to our nation but to others as well. The Democratic
Peoples Republic of Korea had also increased its military presence along the 38th parallel, and is
poised to strike against the small US garrison, and overwhelm South Koreas defenses. South
Korea asks UN to impose penalties against North Korea for their continued nuclear threats. We
also ask the increased presence of the US fleet and continue its patrol near the waters of the
Korean Peninsula, to avoid any North Korean submarines to infiltrate our territory and commit
any attacks against our marine force. South Korea now yields the floor to the Chair.
For these reasons, South Korea will maintain its sanctions on North Korea and will
respond sternly against any provocations by maintaining a strong South Korea-US alliance and
improving our own military capabilities, including the development of Korea Air and Missile
Defense System. We seek to approach the North with pressure along with engagement, which is
what all the current sanctions are ultimately striving for, the isolation of North Korea and to
engage in talks and negotiations. South Korea now yields the floor to the Chair.
North Korea, are you aware that your nuclear tests had caused a 6.3 magnitude
earthquake in your country? A man-made earthquake. An event that should have been caused by
a natural phenomenon but instead was triggered by your nuclear ambitions. Please be reminded
that our country may be separated from yours but we still stand on the same land. Therefore, any
trouble that would arise from your country will affect ours. South Korea now yields the floor to
the Chair.
Three options are possible in dealing with the North's nuclear program. One is to
continue the current policy where South Korea continues suspecting, vilifying and sanctioning
the North, which, ironically, seems to encourage the production of nuclear weapons. On the other
hand, a more feasible option would be to resume dialogue with the North in a principled but
flexible way, with the ultimate goal of freezing its nuclear program. While this goal may take
some time, an immediate goal could be for North Korea to agree to stop its nuclear test. Finally,
the last option would be to sign a peace agreement that would replace the truce accord signed in
1953. South Korea now yields the floor to the Chair.
