Ancillary Task

Analysis 2

By Eden Hiles
Magazine Ad for Digipak Example 1
This is the first magazine advert for a
digipak that I am going to analyse. I chose
to analyse this magazine advert because
the it drew me in with the clear, bold
fonts they used and also because I am
aware of the artist and I once aspired to
be like her so I understand what it is like
to be influential and aspire to be like
someone who you dont know on a
personal level.
Who are the Institutions responsible for
creating the text?
This magazine advert was released in an issue of We Love Pop. This means that they
were responsible for creating the text seen on the previous slide. Along with the
magazine comes the publishers which for We Love Pop is Egmont. Egmont also
publish magazines/books/newspapers such as: The Christopher Robin Collection,
Mr Men Magical Treasury, Go Girl, Descendants and many more. Also, as the
magazine advert is about Beyonce and her album release, the record label who
manage Beyonce are also responsible for creating the text and they are RCA who
are under the power of Sony Music Group who are in charge of other labels such as:
Legacy, Syco Entertainment and these kinds of labels represent a lot of major artists
such as: One Direction, Chris Brown & many more.
How does the institutional context impact
on the audience, representations and use of
conventions?
As the text is created by a record label that is run by one of the big labels that
created Vevo, there will be a lot of impact on the audiences. This is because it will be
a trusted source of music which means if they are creating a text that influential
people (such as Teenagers) are going to read, then the audience will trust that it will
be a good style of music that they may enjoy because they have listened to the same
style before that is released by the same label so they are able to trust that labels
opinion and let that sway them to listen.
How does the institutional context impact
on the audience, representations and use of
conventions?
The institutional context impacts representation because it allows the media to
represent the artist in a way that will be most suitable for the particular target
audience. In this case, Beyonce is being represented in an almost angelic light which
shows that she is someone to look up to; to aspire to be. This is a perfect
representation for her target audience which is usually teenage girls- young adults
so aged between 15- 25.
How does the institutional context impact
on the audience, representations and use of
conventions?
The institutional context can impact the use of conventions because depending on
the institution, the context will be different styles. Also, if you have more than one
institution working together on one product, there is risk of miscommunication or
conflict if there are conventions of the text that cant be agreed on. This could lead
to the finished product not having the same conventions that the institution had
planned which could impact how the artist is represented and how the audience
react to the advert itself.
Magazine Ad for Digipak Example 2
This is the second magazine advert for a
digipak that I have chosen to analyse. I
chose to analyse this advert because it
features an artist that I believe everyone
knows something about whether they
are a teenager or a mature adult. This
means whoever reads this piece of
analysis will already have some
background knowledge and may be able
to understand the concept of the piece of
writing.
Who are the Primary audience?
The primary audiences for this magazine advert would be predominantly teenage
girls, however Ed Sheeran attracts a lot of male audience as well because of the
variety of music he produces such as: rap, pop. Ed Sheerans primary audience would
most likely live in the rural areas of cities as they are stereotypically the type to
listen to Eds style of music. They will most likely be aspirers as Ed is an artist who is
very idolising so he is someone to look up to; a perfect role model for children. They
will be in the socio-economic groups of D/E as his primary audience are most likely
to be students which means they will more than likely be unemployed. Eds music is
diverse and in no way discriminating which means that anyone of any gender, sexual
orientation, race and ethnicity can listen to his music and may enjoy it.
Who are the Secondary audience?
The Secondary audience for this magazine ad are most likely mature adults between
the ages of 28-50. This is because, this is the audience that are not prone to like the
kind of style music that Ed produces but they like Ed Sheeran as an artist because of
the way he sings or produces certain types of music. This audience could possibly
live in the suburbs of cities and the places that are a little more economically
developed. They could be Silver surfers (the older audience) which means they may
only like Ed Sheeran from that particular genre of music. Again, this audience could
be any gender, sexual orientation ethnicity and race as the music is diverse for
everyone. The socio-economic class of this audience may be class B/C as they may
be more financially independent.
How is the text attracting/appealing its
target audience?
The magazine advert is attracting its target audience by using the colour orange to
attract Ed Sheeran fans as orange is seen as his theme colour as he sticks with it
throughout most of his products. Also, by using Ed Sheeran himself as the dominant
image for the ad appeals to a lot of his target audience as he is easy recognisable and
it is an aesthetically pleasing image for the target audience because their possible
favourite artist is smiling and looking happy which will immediately make the
audience feel happy as well.
