information on a graphic organizer and chose a memoir from Teenink.com to analyze.

Description and Teacher/Trainer Directions

This lesson in an introduction to the memoir unit. Students will use the internet
to conduct research on memoirs and record their information on a graphic
organizer and complete an analysis of a memoir. This lesson is student-centered
and allows for differentiated instruction (strategy groups and student choice).
Prior to this lesson, instruct BYOD students to download the QR reader i-
nigma on their device. Also, make sure each school iPads have the i-nigma
app downloaded.
Begin by issuing iPads to students without their own device.
Next, give each student a copy of the Memoir Scavenger Hunt research
assignment sheet that contains the QR codes for various websites (see Memoir
Scavenger Hunt below) and the memoir graphic organizer to help them stay
organized as they work through the series of research questions for each website.
Inform students that this research assignment will help them learn about memoirs
and help them analyze a memoir.
Next, give each student a copy of the Analysis of Memoir handout for them to
complete their analysis of the memoir they choose to read.
Next, instruct students to complete the graphic organizer before analyzing the
memoir.
Finally, give students a copy of the Scavenger Hunt Rubric.
*The teacher will monitor students progress, work with small groups as needed, and
assist with technical issues.

Setting
The setting for this activity will take place the classroom where student desks are
arranged in groups of four (six groups total). The teacher uses round table in back
of classroom for small groups. Each student will have a mobile device (BYOD or
school iPad) and the assignment handouts.
Learners
The learners for this lesson include 8th grade regular education and learning
disabled students. The students range in ages 13-15 consisting of males and
females. The ethnicities represented are White, African American, Hispanic and
multiracial with majority being economically disadvantaged. This lesson will be
repeated in four different class periods throughout the same day. Two of the
classes consist of only regular education students with multiple ability levels. The
other two classes consist of regular education and learning disabled students along
with a regular education and an interrelated teachers as well as a paraprofessional.
Students in all classes are proficient in speaking English.
Memoir Scavenger Hunt

The purpose of this scavenger hunt is to help you research memoirs so that you can apply the
information learned when writing your own memoir. The QR codes will take you to websites that will
provide information for each section on the graphic organizer. Record your responses for sections I-IV
on the graphic organizer.

I. Use the QR code to learn the differences and similarities between memoirs and
autobiographies. Explain the differences and similarities between memoirs and

II. Use the QR code to learn why you should write a memoir. Give 5 reasons to write a
memoir.

III. Use the QR code to learn about the characteristics of a memoir. List at least 5

IV. Use the QR code to learn tips that will help you when writing your memoir. List at least 5
tips to keep in mind when writing a memoir.

Follow these steps to help you find a memoir to read:


First, go to MENU.
Then, type memoirs in the search box.
Next, click on Teen memoirs on a variety of experiences.
Next, select a memoir on the first page to read and complete the Analysis of Memoir handout.
Finally, you will turn in your completed memoir analysis handout and put your graphic organizer in your
reading/writing notebook for future reference when writing your own memoir.
