George Herbert o algo entendido

G eorge Herbert (1593-1633) es un poeta estricta-

mente devocional del que T. S. Eliot, en el ltimo
de sus grandes ensayos, afirma que, al igual que su-
cede con san Juan de la Cruz, ningn tema menos ele-
vado podra haber evocado su genio. Perteneca a una
de las familias ms influyentes de la Inglaterra isabelina
y jacobea. Su madre, lady Herbert, mantuvo una larga
amistad con John Donne, que le dedic varios de sus
poemas y que, con el tiempo, se convertira tambin en
amigo de su hijo George. Tras su paso por Wensminster
School, ingres en el Trinity College de la Universidad
de Cambridge, de la que fue nombrado orador en 1620.
Vivi rodeado de los mayores intelectuales de su poca.
Fue admirador y amigo de Francis Bacon, a quien ayu-
dara a traducir al latn The Advancement of Learning, y
del obispo Lancelot Andrewes, principal traductor de
la King James Bible (1611). Al final de su vida mantuvo
una estrecha relacin con Nicholas Ferrar, el fundador
de la vecina comunidad de Little Gidding, a quien envia-
ra en el momento de su muerte el manuscrito con sus
poemas para que, si crea que los conflictos espiritua-
les que en ellos mostraba podan ser de ayuda a algn
alma afligida, los hiciera pblicos y, si no, los quemara.
De carcter altanero y temperamental, su mayor
tentacin quiz fuera la ambicin pero, a la muerte de
Jacobo I, en 1625, se desvanecieron todas sus esperan-
zas de lograr un puesto de mayor relevancia. Dos aos
ms tarde, al morir su madre, renunci al prestigioso
puesto de orador y abandon la universidad en la que
haba permanecido desde 1609. Comienza entonces
un perodo de crisis que concluye cuando, a la edad
de treinta y siete aos, es ordenado sacerdote y se re-
tira a la pequea parroquia de Bemerton, entre Wilton

y Salisbury, que haba recibido de manos del conde de
Pembroke. Fue all donde, alejado del gran mundo y ro-
deado de campesinos iletrados, escribi durante los tres
aos que le quedaban de vida gran parte de los poemas
que, bajo el ttulo de The Temple, public pstumamen-
te su amigo, y primer lector conocido, Nicholas Ferrar.
De haber muerto slo tres aos antes, su nombre no
figurara en ninguna antologa de poesa inglesa.

Una cuestin que inevitablemente se plantea en torno
a la obra de Herbert consiste en cmo puede interesar a
un lector no creyente una obra potica ineludiblemen-
te devocional. Cernuda ofrece una posible respuesta
cuando, respecto a san Juan de la Cruz, afirma que la
poesa acta sobre la mente del lector sustituyendo o
contagiando, en cierto modo, su pensamiento y per-
cepcin por aquellos del poeta []. Porque es necesario
que exista cierta afinidad entre ambas mentes, la del
poeta y la del lector, aunque en ste ltimo el proceso
espiritual sea nicamente pasivo, dejando obrar sobre
ella la mente activa del primero. Despus de todo no
es necesario estar enamorado para que nos conmueva
y produzca un goce esttico un poema de amor, ni tene-
mos por qu compartir la pasin del poeta por el objeto
de su amor.
Quiz sea la primaca del amor sobre los aspectos
teolgicos la que explique la vigencia de la poesa de
Herbert en los lectores actuales. Quien lo lea sin pre-
juicios sentir la intensidad y transparencia de sus sen-
timientos, que no contradicen su aguda inteligencia,
su suave ingenio, su humor y unos hallazgos formales
que, a diferencia de los de John Donne, extraen toda su
fuerza de la sencillez. Mas no se trata de una sencillez
meramente verbal sino de un modo trabajado de ser, de
una depuracin espiritual que constituye el ncleo fun-

damental de sus poemas y que ha hecho que su obra se
haya mantenido presente en la conciencia potica co-
lectiva de los lectores ingleses. As parecen confirmarlo
el inters que despert en Eliot o, aun antes, el redes-
cubrimiento que hizo Coleridge de su poesa en la edad
madura.
A pesar de la sutileza y variedad formal de sus poe-
mas, la precisin de su diccin y la inmediatez con la
que presenta sus sentimientos, Herbert escribe y pien-
sa con lo que tiene a mano; es decir, en un marco de
referencias bblicas. No es necesario ser creyente para
comprender que la vida de Cristo es tambin una posi-
ble interpretacin de la vida y de la muerte; ni creer en
su carcter sagrado para apreciar el valor esttico y hu-
mano de unos poemas construidos con unos materia-
les que, para Herbert, no eran simblicos sino en gran
medida literales. Sus poemas son, en ltima instancia,
palabras de alguien que habla con una voz no imposta-
da, el testimonio de quien ha vivido su vida potica sin
concesiones al engao ni al lugar comn, soslayando el
artificio de quien confunde lo que siente con lo que de-
sea sentir, lo genuino con lo falso, algo especialmente di-
fcil de evitar en el terreno de la poesa religiosa. Y Her-
bert es consciente de ello cuando alude a sus propios
sermones escritos en latn en los que, como orador de
la universidad, empleaba con gran maestra los recursos
retricos de la oratoria (Jordn (2), p. 63):
[] buscaba
palabras singulares, elegantes ficciones;
brotaban en mi mente inflamados conceptos,
metforas rizando la ms llana intencin
y adornando el sentido como para venderlo.
Herbert no slo busca un lenguaje sencillo, sino tam-
bin el acorde del alma con los versos. sa es, en sus
propias palabras, la finura del poema (Un himno ver-
dadero, p. 103):

Mortificacin
