Principals Report

Congratulations to the SRC on their organisation of Pink

Day at Gulgong High School. It was great to see all
students get involved and fundraise for this very worthy
cause. Thank you to all the staff who donated to have the
school de-flocked.

Transition for Year 7 students in 2018 commences next

Wednesday. Miss Greenwood has been busy planning all
of the activities and I look forward to meeting with all of
the students next week.

This Friday is World Teachers Day a day to recognise

the dedication and commitment of our staff to Public Education and your students.
Please take the time to thank them when you can for all the work that they do on a
daily basis.

This week and next week, I will be visiting schools in Newcastle and Sydney as part of
the External Validation process. On Monday and Tuesday this week, I was fortunate to
visit Kotara High School and participate in their validation process. It was a great
opportunity to develop networks with other schools and to deepen my understanding
of the process that Gulgong High School will be involved in at a future date.

Recently, a link was placed on our Facebook page to a school survey as part of our
planning process for 2018-2020. If you could take the time to complete the survey, it
would be greatly appreciated.

Year 8 VALID Science test

The Validation of Assessment for Learning & Individual Development (VALID) test for Year 8
students will be held between Wednesday 1 November and Friday 10 November 2017.
The test takes approximately 70 minutes. The VALID Science 8 test is an interactive,
multimedia test completed entirely on a computer.
VALID Science 8 contains multiple choice, short response and extended response tasks that are
grouped around real-world issues, including scientific investigations. This is a diagnostic test, with
tasks framed on Stage 4 outcomes and essential content in the NSW Science Years K10 Syllabus.
Students will be tested on their:
knowledge and understanding of science
understanding and skills in the process of scientific investigation
ability to evaluate evidence, make judgements and think critically
ability to access information and communicate scientific ideas.

Students also complete a survey about their opinions, attitudes and values about science. Since
students complete VALID Science 8 on a computer, each student needs to bring headphones or
earbuds that plug into a school computer. Earbuds for an iPod or portable player are suitable.
If your child has a disability that needs special consideration or has been educated in English for less
than one year, please contact your childs school to discuss special provisions or possible exemption
from the test.
Results of the test will be available during Term 1 2018. Information about each student is treated
confidentially and held securely to ensure that the right to privacy of all students is maintained. A
personal report for each student will be sent to parents/carers to describe the science knowledge
and skills demonstrated by the student in the test. There will also be information about how your
childs results compare with overall performance of all students in the test.
Ms Macleod is able to provide you with more details about the VALID program if you require
additional information.
Shining Success

Late last term, it was reported that Haylee Mullette, Makayla Rankin and Madison Turner were placed
3rd in their age division for an alum crystal grown at school. We have recently been informed that their
crystal will be one of only 7 across all high school age categories to represent NSW in the national
finals. Results should be available in early November. Congratulations again girls.

Kids Sport Tips

Max Potential (MP) is a community-based program aimed at growing young leaders in local
communities. It connects young people with other leaders in their local community. This means that
young adults have the opportunity to work with someone who genuinely cares about their future and
will invest in it. Your local club is supporting MP as a community initiative in your local area, giving you
the opportunity to get involved.

WHY GET INVOLVED?

Pink Up Gulgong High School

Staff and students decided to Pink Up Gulgong High School this week to participate in the local efforts
in raising funds for the McGrath Foundation. On Wednesday 25th October students were allowed to
dress in pink themed mufti and the school gardens received a surprise flock of flamingos. Monies were
collected by SRC students who also ran a raffle with a range of donated prizes. The school managed to
raise $500 which will be used to assist breast care nurses working around the state. Thank you to all
staff and students who assisted and contributed to the successful day.
