Health and Physical Education

Course Description
Health and Physical Education is an essential and basic part of the total education
program. It is a process that contributes to the total development of every student through health
education and physical activity and recognizes the physical, mental, emotional and social
characteristics of students. The Health and Physical Education program provides a variety of
experiences to help all students develop the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary to function
effectively in society.

Objectives:
The student will apply health knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain long-term
health and wellness.
The student will explain the impact of health risks and identify strategies and resources to
limit risk.
The student will demonstrate skills to advocate for personal and community health.
The student will demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of the rules,
terminology, and safety measures for individual and team activities.
The student will demonstrate the basic skills to participate in individual and team sports.
The student will recognize activities that contribute to fitness and understand their value.
The student will perform more precise skills necessary to improve their physical fitness
level.
The student will demonstrate positive social relationships through participation in group
sport.

1 notebook or binder

Rules
1. Be respectful of all people and property. Includes but is not limited to:
Raising your hand to ask or answer questions
Treating others in a manner that you would want to be treated
Using all materials and equipment the way they are meant to be used
Properly disposing all trash

2. Be responsible and make good choices. Includes but is not limited to:
Being on time to class
Being prepared for class
Using safety precautions for all materials and equipment
Trying your best and having a positive attitude

3. Cell phones and other electronic devices should be put away unless otherwise stated by
the teacher.

Consequences
First Offense- Warning
Second Offense- Meeting with teacher outside of class
Third Offense- Written Write-Up
Fourth Offense- Meeting with the principle
Fifth Offense- A call/and or meeting with parents

Procedures
Entering the Classroom
Upon entering the classroom each student should take care of any classroom related procedures
that need to be taken care of. This includes: sharpening pencils, turning in homework, making
sure you have all the necessary materials for class, and using the restroom if you have time
before the bell rings. When the bell rings you should be in your seat. You should check the board
for any directions.

Exiting the Classroom


When leaving the classroom you should check to make sure your desk and the surrounding area
are in the condition they were when you entered the room. All trash should be properly disposed
of, your desk should be put back to its original location if moved and chairs should be pushed
in.

Illness/Injury
In the event of an illness, injury, or any other proper reason as to why you should not participate
in physical education please turn in a doctors note or a note from home explaining your
illness/injury and how long you will need to be dismissed from physical education.

Absences
In the event of an absence, you should check with the teacher to get any work that you missed on
the days you were absent. For every day that you were absent, you will have 3 days to complete
the work and turn it in. Every additional day that you take to turn in the work will result in a 10
point deduction.

Using the Restroom


Given the nature of this class, there will only be one set restroom break during this period. This
break will take place during the transition to the gym after the Health Education section of this
period. With this being said, students will not be given restroom passes during class time and are
advised to use the restroom before coming to class. In the event of a true emergency, the student
will be excused.
Transitioning to the Gymnasium
During the transition from Health to Physical Education students will have 5 minutes to change
into proper athletic clothing. Acceptable clothing for Physical Education includes:
Tennis shoes
Athletic shorts (no shorter than your fingertips) or sweat pants
T-shirt or athletic shirt that covers entire torso (no tank tops)

Each student must change into workout clothes every day. Layering or wearing your workout
clothes underneath your school clothes is not acceptable. If you do not dress out you will be not
be allowed to participate for the day and will be given a 0. Also, please practice good hygiene by
applying deodorant before and after class.

*If you are unable to provide these items for class please come and see me.

Grading
The grade you will receive for this class will be an average of the grade you receive for health
and the grade you receive for physical education. Your grades will be determined as followed:

Health
Class participation 10%
In class assignments 25%
Homework 10%
Projects 25%
Quizzes 10%
Tests 20%

Physical Education
Dressing Out 50%
Class Participation 50%

It is important to note that this document is subject to change or modification during the
semester.

Each student is expected to read this document in its entirety. Each student is also expected
to adhere to the above rules and procedures and to sign and date below confirming that
you are aware of what is expected of you. You are also expected to show this document to
your parents. Once your parent or guardian has reviewed this document, I would like for
them to sign and date as well. If you or your guardian have any questions concerning this
