What Governor Emmanuel should Invest in?

.Transform the economy of our state via industrialization and sustain public-private sector initiative,
thereby opening up opportunities for growth and improved living standards. These were the words of
Governor Emmanuel on May 29, 2015. It is noteworthy that the governor has swung into action with
the recent revitalization of the almost dead Peacock paints and other state-owned enterprises. However,
there is one area the governor can key into to decrease the unemployment rate in the state and increase
GDP.

According to the national bureau of statistics, in a 2009 survey, Akwa Ibom state is number 4 in terms
of unemployment rates by states at 34.1% and there is every possible indication of a rise in this figure
considering the recent downsizing by companies. At this point, there is an urgency to create jobs for
our teaming youth population. One particular area of focus should be TOURISM.

The tourism industry sustains an economy, provides employment for skilled and unskilled manpower
and promotes arts and culture. The industry is important such that it provides a chain reaction and
stimulates the growth of other sectors. For example, with the Ibom International airport in operation,
investing in tourism will trigger the transport sector by an increase in taxi services, hotels would
experience increased patronage, the raffia industry in Ikot Ekpene would also be affected by provision
of souvenirs and memorabilia for tourists.

Tourism boosts the demand for goods and services. With demand, there is increased spending and
consequently, a rise in GDP. For example, with a vibrant tourism industry, a minimum of 1000 tourists
per month spending at least N100,000 in Akwa Ibom, would add N100M monthly to the state and
N1.2billion annually. This amount of money is a significant addition to any economy.

As the popular adage goes you use what you have to get what you want. The beautiful long stretch of
white sand beach, oron museum, golf resort, raffia making, exotic and healthy food, festivals, serenity,
security and good hospitality are some of our remarkable assets which I believe should be marketed to
attract people to Akwa Ibom. Governor Emmanuel should engage the private sector to build a resort at
Ibeno and increase government spending in areas such as parks, game reserves.

Furthermore, there is need to create new programs and activities that would interest people. Sports
tourism can be harnessed by engaging the private sector to organize sporting activities. As one of the
few states and the only within the West African region with a magnificent golf course, corporate bodies
should be courted to sponsor an annual golf tournament with an attractive prize reward to attract
international players with a huge fan base. Other activities to consider include conferences, music
festivals, art, technology and book fairs. Organizing a calendar of events to ensure that every month
there are at least five major activities. This would keep Akwa Ibom on the minds of everyone as the
place to visit.

To reap the benefits of tourism, Governor Emmanuel has to sell Akwa Ibom to the world. This can only
be done by effective publicity and marketing. Social media has become the fastest way to reach out to a
wide audience within a short time. Let's Use it. Radio and television adverts, pamphlets cannot be
ignored. Infact, every means possible should be used to spread the message of VISIT AKWA IBOM.

There is no better time to invest in tourism than now considering the declining growth of the economy
and drop in oil prices. Governor Emmanuel should look into this area.
