Lesson Plan Reflection

1. Lesson Objectives and Student Outcomes: Meets Standards

1.1 - The objectives and outcomes were clear, concise, and measurable. Instruction and

information was put into simple forms to ensure the objectives were covered thoroughly. The

objectives were not exactly to what I was teaching but certain aspects of the objectives matched

parts of my lesson plan successfully.

1.2 - I believe if anything could have been improved, it would be the alignment. I think the

objectives and outcomes were aligned in some aspect but could have been improved. I feel as if

alignment is one of my weak points when creating a lesson plan.

2. Design of Lesson and Pedagogy: Exceeds Standards

2.1 - This lesson plan was one of the more organized lesson plans I have made. I believe if there

was a substitute teacher then they would be able to follow the lesson and still be successful in

teaching the lesson. This lesson had all the components of introduction, body, and closure. The

flow of the lesson was also smooth and easy to transition from and to different topics.

2.2 The strategies I used in my lesson had a variation of activities to engage all students with

different types of thinking and problem solving. In the introduction, we played a Kahoot game,

this game was difficult for them because they had never heard of some of the terminology. They

only had a certain amount of time to answer so they had to think and decide quickly. After the

Kahoot game we watched a overview video, this video was quick and in depth. After the video,

we had a short discussion of what they had learned simply by playing the games. After we took
notes, an assignment was given for individual practice. I believe all the components promoted a

different type of learning and thinking making this lesson successful.

3. Content Knowledge Exceeds Standards

3.1 The content knowledge was reflected and fully described by playing a game in the

introduction to reflect what content knowledge they already had. The assessment at the end also

reflected the content knowledge that they learned during the lesson. MY lesson was the first

lesson of the unit so during the power point notes I added small bits of nutrition information and

let them know they would learn more about it with Coach Estel in the next lessons the next

couple of lessons. At the end of the class I also acknowledged what they would be covering the

next class, and class after that.

4. Understands Characteristics of Students Exceeds Standards

4.1 My lesson had a variety of activities for students to do during the lesson. I believe this

engages all the students in one aspect or another. The different activities all had a clear

explanation of what was to be taught and presented to the students.

4.2 The lesson was developmentally appropriate I believe because all students seemed to be

challenged at one point or another during the lesson. I did not write a full explanation on this,

and that I believe could have been improved on.

4.3 The instruction was appropriately differentiated for students of different learning style.

When I designed the lesson, I wanted to include as many different learning tools as I could. I

incorporated a visual game, a video with a clear description, power point, then hands on

assessment work sheet. There were no students that finished early but if they did finish early they
had other food labels to choose from for extra practice. Again, there was full explanation on how

each section was to be presented with specific questions to ask.

5. Assessment - Exceeds Standards

5.1 I described the diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments. Each assessment was

fully described with how to present the assessment, what exactly I was trying to assess during

each, and any additional questions or information I planned on including as well. Providing links

for my diagnostic assessment provided anyone looking at my lesson plan exactly what I was

using and where it was coming from. I do believe the formative questions I presented throughout

the PowerPoint could have been a little more developed.

5.2 The assessments were aligned with my objectives/outcomes. Each assessment was

described but also aligned with at least one objective. I believe the alignment was not ideal and

could have been better developed to better meet the connection between assessment and

objectives/outcomes. This has always been a lacking part of my lesson plans that always needs

improvement. I believe brainstorming assessments that directly align with the

objectives/outcomes before I develop my lesson plan could possibly help make my alignment

better.

5.3 The informal and formal tools were included with a plan of implementing them. I attached

each assessment I included in my lesson. I provided links to my Kahoot game, and YouTube

video, but made a print out of the power point slides so I could still present the material even if

the technology failed. My teacher made assessment was also printed off and included with an

answer key.
6. Management of Classroom Time Meets Standards

6.1 In my lesson, I had a time frame to follow. Each part of my lesson had a designated time I

would allow for that activity, after that allotted time I knew I needed to move on to the next part

of the lesson. I did not include possibly structural challenges, I believe there was a few

distractions but overall no major distractions conflicted with my schedule.

6.2 Each activity had a time frame to complete in. While students were completing my teacher

made assessment I reminded them that they had a certain amount to complete the activity so we

could still check our work during class time. I believe this helped to keep students focused and

on track. Again, I did not include any possible structural challenges. During the power point,

there were some instances where students wrote slower than others and some students also talked

more. I believe adding more time for the power point would have gave me more of a relaxed

setting so I did not feel rushed to get through all of the information.

6.3 I included my extended activities in my lesson plan. I do believe they were thoughtful and

helpful to students so they could achieve more practice with food labels. The activities could

have been more thought out or differentiated but other than this I believe they are good.

7. Technology Meets Standards

7.1 This lesson plan I used more technology than any other lesson I have ever planned. From

start to finish I was incorporating some sort of technology. I believe the Kahoot game was the

most beneficial because it gave all students an equal opportunity to use technology and assess

what they know before starting the lesson. The power point was also crucial in sharing

information easily and smoothly. Students had an excellent opportunity to retain the information

as well as ask questions on topics they may be confused with.

7.2 The technology was aligned with the Next Generation Standards. I should have included

those standards in my lesson plan but after further evaluation they do align accordingly.

7.3 The technology was described and developmentally appropriate. Kahoot game had difficult

questions and power point had a good amount of information for students to retain as well. The

students all seemed to really enjoy using the technology because Coach Estel uses technology

daily in all his lessons. I believe this made the students more comfortable with me leading the

class.

7.4 Technology used reflected district expectations. Winfield High School encourages

technology in each of their classrooms. I believe this is an up and coming expectation school

districts will have. My lesson reflected accordingly with the views the district has on technology.

8. Data Analysis Exceeds Standards

8.1 To start off, all students played Kahoot on reading food labels. The Kahoot game was quite

difficult for them on some questions. Although they said they had a tough time, they all scored at

least 5 out of 10 on the questions. I expected them to struggle because it is a new concept to them

but the students being able to score at least 50% showed me that they have a general

understanding but providing them with more information would be greatly beneficial. I

continued in my less with a video, then power point.

During the power point I asked questions in between slides while they were writing the

information down. Some students answered but majority did not. I believe the students struggled

to answer the questions because they were too focused on copying the slide down. If I could

teach this part of my lesson again I would provide fill in the blank notes to provide more

opportunity for discussion.

My teacher made assessment was a cumulative worksheet on everything we covered in

the class. My students did well with this assessment. Overall on my assessment there were a total

of 25 questions with 33 possible points. My assessment was made up of true/false, matching, and

fill in the blank. The lowest score on the assessment was 25 out of 33 points. The students were

all successful and did well on the true/false and matching, but some students struggled with the

fill in the blank. I believe the reason they struggled on this section mainly because the food labels

were difficult to see. If I taught this lesson again I would print the labels on the worksheet

themselves so students could easily have the label directly in front of them. Students really

grasped my teaching and this showed on how well they scored on this assessment.

9. Reflection Exceeds Standards

9.1 I used this scoring rubric to score myself on the lesson I taught. I used a scoring system of

5-Exceeds Standards, 3-Meets Standards, 1-Does Not Meet Standards. This rubric had a total

amount of points at 50 points. Out of 50 points I scored 45/50 points. I believe this is a good

score for reflections.

9.2 Each section I explained all components and gave reasons as to why I did or did not meet

the standards. Each reason was explained what I did well or what I could have done different and

will do different if I teach this lesson again.

9.3 Each section was explained and I gave specific reasons on why I scored myself like I did.

9.4 In most sections I did well and would change nothing. In my data analysis, I did however

give specific examples of what went wrong or right and what I would do differently to enhance

my lesson.
9.5 In my data analysis section I added different ways I could reteach and do differently. I also

gave examples of what I could change.

10. Professional Practice Exceeds Standards

10.1 My lesson was turned in on time.

10.2 My lesson plan contained all the identified components.

10.3 I followed the new assigned lesson plan format.

10.4 Lesson plan includes the WVSU reflection form with no spelling or grammar errors.
