STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:

I am writing this statement as a prospective Post Graduate student of University of Wollongong,

Australia for the consideration of Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

Its my pleasure to introduce myself as Muhammad Fahad Qaiser. My father is an agricultural landowner
and my mother is a housewife. I have done Secondary School Certificate at Cadet College Kohat with
89.1% in 2005 and Higher Secondary School Certificate with 81.6% in 2007. I have completed my
Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering at National University of Sciences and Technology, Pakistan (NUST)
in 2011. My purpose of application for student visa is to do Master of Professional Engineering (Major:
Mechanical Engineering) course at University of Wollongong, Australia.

After graduation from NUST in Aug-2011, I joined Gujranwala Tools Dies & Moulds Centre (GTDMC), as a
Mechanical Engineer in the Design Department, which is a manufacturing firm and also provides
consultancy to other manufacturing firms. GTDMC offers a wide range of engineering solutions for
industry like new product design, development and manufacturing. While working at this firm I analysed
the Industrial sector of Pakistan thoroughly. This industrial sector comprises of large and small-scale
Industries. According to Economic Survey of Pakistan, now from 2010-11 the large scale industries
contribute 4.4 % to the real GDP growth rate while the small scale industries contributes7.5 %.

Although small scale industries are seeing faster growth in terms of contribution to the GDP and
employment opportunities but career prospects for graduate engineers in this sector are low. Engineers
enjoy brighter career prospects in large scale industries. As the number of large industrial setups is not
very large, therefore there is a lot of competition to secure a job in this sector. To stand out from the
competition, few years of working experience along with post graduate education can put the individual
in an advantageous position. For this reason, I think it has become necessary for me to pursue Master in
Mechanical Engineering for the development of my career.

The firm where I am working right now falls in the category of small to medium scale industries. Here I
learnt about the major activities carried out at a manufacturing firm. I truly understand the basic steps
involved in the design and development phase of a product. Now I desire to step into the large scale
industrial setups like Heavy Mechanical complex, Aeronautical Complex, Pakistan Steel Mills Ltd,
Pakistan International Airlines and Cement Industry, where I will have ample opportunities to grow. My
decision to go for higher education will prove to be very beneficial to me by brightening my career
prospects and enhancing my employability in my home country.

Top most destinations for quality education in the world are the United States of America, UK, Canada
and Australia. Other European countries like Germany, France, The Netherlands and Italy are highly
industrialized countries and standard of education there is also world-class but learning a foreign
language presents a problem for me. As I am already fluent in English so naturally I had to choose
amongst the English speaking countries. America has a history of racial violence, Canada has an entirely
different climate from my home country; and due to the fact that Australian Universities offer two years
master program with one semester Industry Placement, whereas UKs Universities offer one year
professional master program, I chose Australia for my Master in Mechanical Engineering.
Pakistans Engineering Institutes are also offering Master Programs. Their main focus is on theoretical
research. No University is offering practical Work Integrated Learning because Industry has not been
able to keep pace with the courses taught and the research conducted at the educational institutions.
And this is evident from the fact that Pakistans Industrial base is far underdeveloped than any
Industrialized country.

So, I started searching for the right course at right institution. Applied at some Top Ranked Universities
in Australia and got offer of admission from below mentioned Institutions, University of Wollongong,
Deakin University and RMIT University.

I have offers from three good ranking Universities, but I am choosing University of Wollongong because
it offers a blend of courses which suits my requirements most appropriately. Master of Professional
Engineering Course at University of Wollongong provides the graduates with deep technical knowledge
and an exposure to the strategic and management environment of Australian Engineering Industry. This
understanding of Australian professional practices in Engineering is the most important thing for me
because this is what I want to bring back to Pakistan with me.

Moreover, Wollongong is a key centre for excellence in Manufacturing in Australia. Many big
manufacturing firms like David Brown Gear Industries, BlueScope Steel, MM Kembla Products, Bisalloy
Steel, and BHP Billiton are based in Wollongong. These companies are recognized industry leaders who
compete globally for business. Work placement, which is a part of the curriculum of the course, in one
of these firms will provide me with the required learning experience.

The manufacturing industry in the South Asia and Middle East is on the boom and is comparatively
similar to the already booming Australian industry. The completion of my Masters degree from a top-
notch Australian university will not only provide me a competitive edge in the Pakistan market but will
also open more global doors.

Regards,

Muhammad Fahad Qaiser.
