Project summary
There was concern at the site that leachate could permeate from the old dilute and disperse part of the
landfill to pollute a watercourse adjacent to the site.
It was decided that a cut-off wall should be installed together with a vertical, stone drain against the
landfill side of the wall, with a drainage pipe at the base, to collect leachate.

The geocomposite was fabricated into 5.9m wide panels (excluding geotextile joint overlaps) and fitted with GSEs
CurtainWall Interlock system. This meant that joints between adjacent panels could be formed as the panels were
lowered into the trench. A crane and lifting frame was used to install the panels.
A biodegradable polymer slurry was used to provide support to the trench during the installation phase. This was
effectively displaced by the granular drainage layer once the panels were in place.
