English 10 Romeo and Juliet Group Assignment

Each group will examine and make a presentation on a particular Act of Romeo and Juliet.

Groups will be comprised of four members each.

Each group must produce:

1. Three summaries of the Act, each from the point of view of a different character
(first person). Each summary will:
Explain what happens (plot developments) from the point of view of the particular
character
Describe the characters feelings towards the developments
Make clear the characters motivations (his or her reasons for behaving the way
he or she does)

2. A dramatization of a scene from the portion of the play the group has been assigned.
The more imaginative and striking the performance, the better. This will be performed
for the class. It should be three to five minutes in length. Groups may use props,
costumes or other devices in order to make the best presentation possible.

3. An analysis of the evolution of an important character within the Act. This character
must be different from the three examined in #1 (above). This analysis must establish:
The characters mental and physical traits
The characters state of mind at the beginning of the Act
The characters situation at the beginning of the Act
How the character and her or his situation changes throughout the Act

Please use direct references to the play (quotes) to demonstrate the characters evolution.

4. A line-by-line paraphrase (translation into modern English) of a speech of at least 10

lines from the Act the group has been assigned. Please keep in mind that a line-by-line
paraphrase is not a general translation, such as you will find on No Fear Shakespeare;
instead, it is a direct translation of every line of the speech. Try to be as precise as
possible with your paraphrase.

5. In addition, each group must compose 5 challenging comprehension questions that

relate to the Act. These questions must not be simple yes or no questions; they must
require well-thought-out responses with explanations. You will provide your own
answers to these questions.

The three Act summaries (from the first person points of view), the analysis of a characters
evolution, the line-by-line paraphrase, and the questions (with their answers) must be submitted
to the teacher.
Evaluation: 1. Act summaries (15 marks)
2. Scene presentation (15 marks)
3. Analysis of character evolution (10 marks)
4. Comprehension questions (5 marks)
5. Use of class time (5 marks)

Total: 50 marks
