TACKLING BAD ODOUR FROM THE CARCASS DUMP

1. Freshen the air.

Smell inside the building can be improved by using air-freshening products, such as:
Aerosol sprays or mists
Scented candles
Essential oils in a diffuser, on cotton balls, or mixed with water or alcohol and poured into a
mister or spray bottle
Incense
Hanging air fresheners
Cloth pouches filled with potent fresh herbs, such as rosemary and lavender.
Note: Essentials oils in electrical diffusers are highly recommended. The same are commonly
used in big hotels and airports etc.

2. Deodorize the air.

There are many deodorizing products that can be helpful to neutralize and eliminate the smell
thats lingering in the building. Odours can be absorbed and eliminated by placing open
boxes of baking soda, charcoal etc. placed discretely at different places.

3. Fragrant Plants/Trees as barrier.

Fragrant plants/trees can help in neutralising the odour to a large extent but will take time to
establish. There are several plants/trees that can be used, subject to local availability and
season. Some of them are:
Champa, Kewda, Rajnigandha, Raat di Rani, Kaner, Roses, Marigold, Jasmine (Juhi),
Hyacinth, Lilac, Fragrant Wintergreen, Kadam, Amaltas, Maulsari, Chhal Mogra.
More than one type of plants/trees will have to be planted as flowering doesnt happen
throughout the year.

4. Install industrial grade odour control systems.

Several odour control systems are available in the market, like air filters with an absorbent
filter, electrostatic air cleaner, etc.

4. Dump Management
Press the Municipal Authorities to ensure scientific management of the dump by adopting
methods for neutralizing the odour at source itself. Amritsar MC is currently providing
occasional odour control treatment at Bhagtanwala garbage dump; they can do something for
the carcass dump also. In the long run, they need to be convinced to relocate the dump
elsewhere.
