 Hot Artists at the Clayfolk Show

You may think it was hot in the Rogue
Valley this summer, but some of your
neighbors were working in temperatures
well over two thousand degrees. Were
speaking of clay artists from Jacksonville
and environs, who were firing work
for the 42nd annual Clayfolk Show and
Sale, scheduled for the weekend before
Thanksgiving. You may know some of
these hot ceramists:
Nancy Adams has a
national reputation for
colorful vessels adorned
with exquisitely-crafted
animal and plant figures.
She takes her inspiration
from Native American
renditions of totem objects.
Chris Usher studied
veterinary medicine
in Uruguay, but she is
renowned here for her
animal sculptures, both
large and small. Many
depict rare and unusual
creatures, such as aardvarks and condors.
Kazuko Young brings a Japanese accent
to her clay work, done in the raku style
meaning that it is pulled directly out of a
red-hot fire and plunged into an organic
bed of wood chips or leaves, producing
incandescent, shimmering colors that can
be achieved in no other fashion.
John Dodero also makes raku pots with
a Japanese design, but his colors are from
a different palettealways very intense.
John specializes in vases and urns that
seem to bulge and stretch beyond the
allowable laws of physics.
Jane Andersons palette is muted and
earthy, for she fires her work in a wood-
burning kilnwhich she built. In an
atmosphere of smoke, fire, and ash, the
vitrified clay takes on some of the organic
characteristics of the wood itself, in the
form of ash deposits that become a glaze
at white-hot temperatures.

bigger than we think! Meaning that

beyond our city limits. Did you ever
stop to think about the fact that Britt

all over the northwest, and that makes
them part of our community? The word
community can be defined as a group the Community Center, our work helps
of people with a particular characteristic
or interest in common. I have also seen
it defined as a feeling of fellowship with
others, as a result of sharing common
attitudes, interests, and goals. Therefore,

invests $300,000 in Britt/Jacksonville or an

W
hen talking about the young
and terminally-handsome Nick
Garrett-Powell, my wife quotes
Keith Carradine from the movie, Kill
Bill, remarking, I like his hair! A while engineering at The Musicians Institute
back I wandered in on Nick Garrett-
Powell who was performing solo at South
Stage Cellars, where
he periodically plays
guitar and sings. For
lack of a better word,
he is amazing. I found
myself thinking
that he should be
playing at Carnegie
Hall. He's that good.
Don't get me wrong.
South Stage Cellars
is a musician's
venue, located in a
beautiful historic
brick building that
was constructed
when Lincoln was
President. I know
from experience
it's a great place to perform, and a
great place for wine tasting, too. I'm
just saying that we're lucky to have
Nick performing here in Jacksonville.
I heard him play, Manic Depression,
available on YouTube and All Along the
Watch Tower, featuring his guitar and
vocals. Both songs were performed by
Jimi Hendrix back in the day, but given
modern effects and Nick's innate talent,
the songs were just as electrifying,
maybe even more so. His original songs,
and guitar creations, are also superb.

have a tale to tell.
Many of you know writer
William Goldman for his Academy
Award-winning screenplays to Butch
Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and All
The Presidents Men. None of his work,
however, is remembered as fondly as his
story of Buttercup

as a present to
his two young
daughters. It soon
became a present
to us all. And we,
your critics, got to
peek into a corner
of the package.
Goldman wrote
his novel in 1973.

hereread and in The Princess Bride.
loved it, and bought numerous copies for I was chosen to attend the ceremony, at
friends. Meanwhile, Goldman (unknown
to me, of course), had turned his story
into a screenplay. Several film studios,
we later learned, were interested in
producing it, but only if he eliminated the Robocop, Predator, The Witches of Eastwick,
strange scenes of a grandfather reading and the pilot to a new TV show, Star Trek:
the fantasy to his grandson. Goldman
refused, calling those scenes essential.
The screenplay floated around
Hollywood. In 1979, I (Terry again)
was working in the Columbia Pictures
Story Department (where potential
screenplays come in). One day an agent
submitted a screenplayThe Princess
Bride! I was thrilled. The delivered
copy clearly had been around. It was
bent, stained, and the cover boasted a
rejection stamp from Universal Pictures.
I raced with it to my boss, who liked it.
But the Columbia brass rejected it.
Goldman, meanwhile, wasnt giving up.
At one point, director Richard Lester
(A Hard Days Night) wanted to direct.
At another, actor Christopher Reeve
(Superman) wanted to play Westley.
Neither happened. Then Goldman
met Rob ReinerMeathead from
All in the Family. Reiner had formed
a production company. He loved the
screenplay, and managed to finance
the production. It was now early 1987,
and I (Terry again) was working as
a publicist for Twentieth Century

Atlanta, GA. Paula (she gets to enter the
story here) and I flew down, hopeful,
but aware of our serious competition:
The Next Generation.
In a ballroom filled with people, we
waited as awards were given for: Best
Novel; Best Short Story; Best Artist;
Best Editor. Then the announcer said:
The Hugo Award for Best Dramatic
Presentation goes toThe Princess
Bride. I kissed Paula, ran to the stage,
accepted the rocket ship shaped
statuette, and mumbled a spontaneous
speech. I have no idea what I said, but
Paula insists it was fine.
I carried the award, wrapped in a hotel Over the river and through the wood.
towel, back to L.A. where I delivered it to
Rob Reiners office. A secretary casually Subaru makes getting there half the fun!
accepted itand I went back to work.
Love for The Princess Bride has never
faded. The book has never gone out
of print. This month marks the 30th Test drive one today at:

asked Paula if I could tell our tale.

A
s 2017 comes to a close, I wanted
to share with our Jacksonville
family what is in-store for you
in 2018. We have so many shows we are
excited about and we look forward to
presenting them to you.
To open the season, we bring to our
Jacksonville stage the classic musical
comedy "Singin in the Rain." This musical
Community Spirit, was adapted from the movie version of
the same name. As I'm
Professional Standard sure you will remember,
this movie starred Gene
Kelly, Donald O'Connor,
and Debbie Reynolds.
2018
Come support your It offers a lighthearted
depiction of Hollywood
live theater company in the late 1920s, with the
three leads portraying
performers caught up in
the transition from silent
films to "talkies."
Next up is a slick musical called "Blues
in the Night," which highlights blues
UPCOMING PRODUCTIONS music from the 20's and 30's. This musical
will not disappoint as the actors cast
in this show are top-notch singers and
performers in the valley.
Jacksonville After that, we have the highly
successful Broadway Musical, "Jekyll &

Improv Comedy Show the role first done on the Camelot stage in
2013. The story of a man trying to unlock

turn to the darkness so that he may help

Next is a wild comedy called "Black
Comedy." The play is written to be staged
under a reversed lighting scheme: the
Jacksonville play opens on a darkened stage. A few

title of the play is a pun. Action that is

Following will be the musical comedy,
"Pippin." This musical surrounds Pippin,
the firstborn son of Charlemagne who
finds his life lacking excitement so he
goes in search of fulfillment. The recent
revival on Broadway won the Tony
Award for best revival of a musical.
In the summer, productions in our
Medford location start back up with
the two person musical comedy, "Pete
& Keely." A divorced
couple who were once
the highlight of 1950's
and 1960's Las Vegas
entertainment come back
together in the 1970's to
perform for the first time
since their divorce on a
live TV show. They use
the show to work through
their "differences" and
comedy ensues.
Following that in Medford is the
comedy musical, "Disenchanted," where
"Disney" princesses tell their stories of
what life is really like for them in the
kingdom. We jump back to Jacksonville
for the thriller "Gaslight." This play
focuses on a seemingly normal couple,
the Manninghams. It turns out that
the suave Jack Manningham is slowly
torturing his wife, Bella, into insanity
under the guise of kindness.
For Halloween, for those who enjoy
a very macabre flavor, the Medford
Randall will have its October haunted
house fundraiser along with adding the
spoof musical of the horror movie, "Evil
Dead" with "Evil Dead, The Musical."
Rounding-out its season in
Jacksonville, the last production of
2018 will be, "A Christmas Carol,
The Musical," adapted from the 2014
television movie musical of the same
name. With so much to see and love, we
hope you come see us!

hen my schedule gets hectic
and my stress level increases, I
like to take a deep breath and
reflect on the good things I have to be
grateful for. And right now I am grateful
for the many folks who have been so
helpful in pulling together some of our
seasonal activities.
Haunted Trolley: For the Haunted
Trolley Tour, it takes 20
people each evening,
plus those involved in
developing the event in
advance. Denise Cascino
and Ellen Martin, all newer
residentsalong with
Connie Bishop and Arlis
Duncan, were invaluable in
developing the script and
character ideas. Dan Cascino
brought a new vitality to the
special effects with a creative mind and
technical insight.
Linda Kestner was there every
evening to check-in our guests and sell
tickets along with information center
staff and Chamber members to help
with greeting and boarding.
The Haunted Trolley narrators served
as ambassadors during the tours and
gave the tours a personal touch. They
devoted hours of their time to be very
familiar with the script and the route.
So Id like to recognize Connie Bishop,
Debbie Tollefson, Arlis Duncan, Jeanena
Whitewilson, Ellen Martin, Denise
Cascino, Tony Kilcollins and Steve
Carlson for making time to help.
And for the many people who stepped-
up to portray characters along the route
and set-up and break down special
effects. That list is too long to include
here and more are being added as I write
this, but know how much
we appreciate you. The live
characters along the route
are what make this tour so
much fun.
And, a very special call out
to my mother-in-law. Joanne
Renninger. While visiting us
from Pennsylvania, she spent
some of her time sewing
costumes. I think she was
especially proud of the fact
that she did so without any patterns.
She customized existing pieces so they
could be worn by people of various sizes
and made up new pieces from random
fabric I had collected over the years.
Some turned-out so nicely that they may
be used by the Beekman House docents,
as well. Thanks to her hard work, we are
much better prepared for future events.

Joan Longs Lifetime Goal:
Make a Difference
O
ne of the first things Joan Long
showed me in her Pioneer Village
living room was a small book by
Deidra Riggs, Every Little Thing. Joan said
the books theme, that one can make a
positive difference wherever they are, has
been her lifelong goal.
To understand how this has played
out in Joans life, it is important to start
at her beginning in 1929 in the town of
Beloit, Kansas, where her father was a
high school football and basketball coach.
Given her fathers dedication to athletics
and coaching abilities, Joan remembers,
Almost everyone in town was hoping
for a boy, but they got a cheerleader
instead. Joans small
town life in Beloit was
not to last long, for her
father left coaching
and took a job with
the US Department of
Agriculture, based in
Chicago. When Joan
was four, a sister, who
now lives in Medford,
joined the family. Joan
remembers spending
memorable summers
with her grandparents
in Topeka, Kansas
where she focused on
baby kittens, learning
to ride a bicycle,
enjoying a tire swing
and a carefree life style. Joans early
education occurred in Oak Park, Illinois,
but, during her senior year in high school,
her father was asked to head up the San
Francisco Department of Agriculture
office, and the family made the move,
resulting in Joan graduating from Palo
Alto High School in 1947.
Shortly after Joan was born, her
father and mother started investing in
an educational policy, a forerunner
of todays 529 Educational Plan. This
policy provided Joan with $100 a month
while in college. With that incentive,
she entered San Jose State, majoring in
Early Childhood Education, receiving
her Bachelor of Science degree in 1951.
She remembers her college years with
fondness and especially her Delta
Gamma sorority; she still has frequent
contact with her sorority sisters and
considers them some of her closest
friends. In addition to her sorority
memories, it was at San Jose State that
she met Charles Long. While they met
at San Jose State, soon after, Charles
transferred to UC Berkeley only to be
called up in the Army Reserves and sent
to Japan. After six months in Japan, he
was sent home and the young couple,
tired of a long-distance romance, were
married on August 12, 1951. Charles
returned to Berkeley to continue his
studies in Soil Science, while Joan took
her first teaching job. Once Charles
finished his degree, he took a position
at UC Davis, and they then started their
family; Michael coming first in 1955,
followed by Christopher in 1957 and
Jonathon in 1959.
Charles always carried with him
a sense of adventure, and in 1967
he noticed a promotion sign at UC
Davis for a research fellowship at the
University of Hawaii. He was intrigued
and flew to Hawaii to check it out.
He interviewed, was offered the job
and called Joan with these directions,
Resign your job, sell the house, pack-
up things, bring the boys and come to
Hawaii as soon as you can. Joan laughs
when remembering this time in her life
and relates, Deciding whom you marry
is the most important decision you will
ever make. I was fortunate to have made
a good decision.

Make a Holiday Wreath at the Farm

reathsa fascinating history
and beautiful holiday tradition!
The word wreath is from an
English word meaning twist, such as in
a circle. And, wreath, translated literally,
means a thing bound around, from the
Greek word diadema. In Christianity,
the wreath was used to symbolize Christ,
the circular shape, with no beginning
or end, representing eternity or life
never-ending. In ancient Rome, wreaths
were hung on doors,
representing victory.
And the Greeks and
Romans made laurel
wreaths to be worn
as headdresses to
represent ones
occupation, rank,
achievements and
status, and were
used to crown the
Olympic Games
winners. In the
early 19th century,
wreaths would be
laid on graves to
honor the dead. Over the centuries,
the wreath has evolved and is now a
traditional form of decoration during
the Yuletide Season, hung on doors as
a form of welcome, providing cheer to
visitors, both old and new, symbolizing
peace, joy and contentment.

September Community Clean-up
DayThank you to all who were able to
join us on Saturday, September 30 for our
annual fall clean-up day of the cemetery
grounds. While the turn-out was a bit
smaller than in the past, the group was
amazing and managed to fill 60 very large
bags with leaves. These annual clean-up
days continue to pay off by keeping the
cemetery looking tidy and safe for visitors
to walk about. My sincere appreciation to
the following folks: Linda Kestner, Steve
and Susan Casaleggio, Vivienne Grant,
John Welsh, Beverly Helvie, Vicki Lucus,
Lois Cartier and Kathy Garrett.
The Return of Meet the Pioneers
While I must admit that I was a little
nervous about what to expect with
bringing back Meet the Pioneers after
taking a year off in 2016, my fears quickly
disappeared after tickets went on sale on
September 6. The response was amazing
and we played to sell-out audiences on
both days. Our wonderful cast: Steve and
Mary Ann Carlson, Steve Casaleggio, Jim
Davidian, Vivienne Grant, Jois Harkness,
Robert Hight, Constance Jesser, Carolyn
Kingsnorth, Marcy McQuillan, Anne
Peugh, Lynn Ransford, David Sours, Lara
Stazdas, Seth Weintraub and Ann Wilton
presented some very interesting and
informative stories of early Pioneers and of
historic events in the Rogue Valley. Those
attending had nothing but high praise for
the performances of the cast and for this
year's stories. Our sincere appreciation to
all the Players for an outstanding job and
for all the time they spent learning their
lines and in rehearsal. The new format and
revised tour times were generally well-
received by those attending. It certainly
made for a safer operation and required
less volunteer hours to setup and cleanup.

 Pioneer Profiles: An 1854 Letter from Oregon
In the mid-1800s, the promise of gold and free land lured fortune seekers, settlers, and
merchants to the newly formed Oregon Territory. Carolyn Kingsnorth has stepped aside from
our pioneer tales this month so that you can hear from an actual pioneer. A big thank you to
historian Ben Truwe for discovering this letter from a 25-year-old lawyer named Orange Jacobs
who arrived in Oregon from Michigan in 1852. Jacobs settled in Jacksonville a year later and
opened a law practice. On October 17, 1854, he wrote the following letter to the Philadelphia
Public Ledger from Sterlingville, now a ghost town but originally located about 6 miles south

 A Few Minutes with the Mayor

D
id you know we have a town
historian? Well, we do! Hes one
of the many volunteers who serve
without pay in our community. His name
is Larry Smith and he can just about
recite the history of any event, person, or
structure within our city. Hes your man
if you want to know who did what to
whomsoever in whatsoever year.
Recently, Larry took a trip to New
York City where he visited my old digs
on the Upper West Side. I answered his
questions as well as I could about what it
was like growing up there, but realized
it was an experience we all go through,
unique to only ourselves.
We lived on the fifth floor of what is
called a tenement. In fancy buildings
with doormen, the higher your floor
the higher your rent was. In tenements,
without elevators, it was just the opposite.
But what are five flights of stairs to a
youngster taking them three at a time?
Like most people on our block, my
parents were the working poor. Around
the corner, in the buildings with elevators
and doormen, they were middle class.
The difference between these two worlds
can be illustrated by the shoes each wore.
When our shoes wore down to a point
where the soles had a hole in them, we
stuffed them with cardboard until the
money was there to repair them while
hoping it wouldnt rain. Around the
corner they simply bought new shoes.
The kids on my block had just as much
pride and got just as much out of life
as the kids in the high rent district
perhaps more, because we played in
the streets. Our favorite form of play
was called stoop ball, a game which even
the great Willie Mays grew up playing.
Income-redistribution proponents
would likely never accept the fact that
we were as happy as those kids living
in their spacious apartments with newer
shoes. Still, I would like to believe
their motives are humanitarian and are
therefore, whether they know it or not,
based on Christs dictum to, Love one
another as I have loved thee. However, I
do not believe that can be said of todays

of our President and of our country.
Sadly, their hatred has permeated every
element of our society.
Such hatred was shown after the
Las Vegas shooting tragedy when a
seemingly intelligent, well-educated
woman with a law degree from
Columbia University wrote, Im actually
not even sympathetic because country music
fans often are Republican gun-toters. With
59 people dead, and hundreds wounded
on the ground, her remark was so horrific
that even CBS, her employer, no bastion
of conservatism, fired her in less than
24 hours. Haley Geftman-Gold, the lady
in question apologized immediately,
admitting she never should have posted
such remarks on Facebook for all to
see. Perhaps, but the point is she really
believes what she said or she wouldnt
have posted them.
Each day some entertainer comes forth
to tell the rest of us that we are all doomed
with this President. Miley Cyrus was
so angry she vowed to leave the United
States forever if Donald Trump became
President. She hasnt left yet, but shes still
angry. However, as Mark Twain warned,
Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the
vessel in which it is stored than to anything on
which it is poured.
There is another entertainer who
showed the world that she is a true class
act. Taylor Swift, upon hearing that a
police officer from California died in
the Las Vegas massacre, sent dozens
of flower arrangements together with
her condolences to the officers police
department. A caring person, she also
voiced an understanding of the dangers
of anger when she once said, Red is such
an interesting color to correlate with emotion,
because its on both ends of the spectrum.
On one end you have happiness, falling in
love, infatuation with someone, passion, all
that. On the other end youve got obsession,
jealousy, danger, fear, anger and frustration.
Thats quite an observation. Im not
angry at anybody and I havent put
cardboard in my shoes for years, but if I
had to, I still wouldnt be angry.

City Council Meeting, October 3,
2017During Public Comment, Tony
Hess urged Council to consider moving
forward with several beneficial smaller-
scale projects and adopting a 5-year
plan for implementing projects currently
under consideration. Hess list included
expansion of the Public Works facility
behind the library, which he said was
cramped due to the city now storing its
street sweeper and trolley in 2 of the 7
existing bays.
Several citizens asked that Council move
ahead on selecting a site for a proposed
Dog Park including Lonnie Ellis and Karen
Barnwell. Ellis asked that City Planner Ian
Foster provide the dog park citizens group
with a list of city-owned property that
would handle such a need should the city
decide to move in that direction.
Council approved two grants
as recommended by the Transient
Lodging Tax Committee for: Art
PresenceRepairing Damaged Walls
and Replacing Flooring in the Historic
County Jail in the amount of $ 2,200 and
$6200 for the Jacksonville Chamber of
Commerce2018 Advertising Plan.
Fire Department Service Delivery
by Fire Chief Devin Hull
When, where, and how much are the
common questions asked by administrators,
city or county council, and citizens when
it comes to determining the resources
for Fire Departments. Determining the
proper level of resources to deploy for a
fire department involves asking the same
questions as well as balancing the safety
concerns of citizens and the financial
situation of the local government.
Of the when, where, and how
questions where is the biggest question
and has the most impact on other
decisions. Some of the areas it can impact
include: how many units are needed,
how big should they be, and when
should the units be deployed. All of this
impacts overall cost.
Poorly-placed fire stations, apparatus
and personnel often results in more
resources being placed in the community
than are needed to provide the desired
level of service. The availability of land
to build on impacts the cost and the size
of a new station, which can also impact
the types of apparatus that can be located
at that station. Deciding how many
emergency response resources to deploy,
and where, is not an exact science. There
are no perfect deployment models, but
there are a lot of resources, studies and data
that support devolving these standards.
The available sources, include the
Insurance Services Office (ISO), the
National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA),
the Commission on Fire Accreditation
International (CFAI), the Occupational
Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA), American Heart Association
(AHA), and comparable departments
across the nation.
The ultimate decision is based on a
combination of risk analysis, professional
judgment, and the citys willingness to
accept more or less risk. Accepting more
risk generally means that fewer resources
are deployed, though deploying more
resources is no guarantee that loss will
be less, especially in the short term.
Obviously, there are many pieces to
consider, but there are some good sources
to draw on to help make the decisions.
Response Time Standards: Emergency
Medical ServicesOne method of
measuring and evaluating response times
is to count the number of patients who
survive to the point of being released
from a hospital. Although survival is
not solely a function of the timeliness
of care, time is crucial to a critically
injured or seriously ill patient. Guidelines
published by Basic Trauma Life Support
International (a widely known training
institute) suggest that a trauma patients
odds of survival are directly linked to the
amount of time that elapses between the
injury and definitive surgical treatment.

Council voted unanimously to no
longer consider purchasing the Spring
Air commercial site on North 5th Street
as a proposed location for a new fire
station. The location is available for sale
for $1.2 million. The site was brought
to the attention of Council as a possible
fire department location by Fire Chief
Hull in two previous meetings that
resulted in council holding a full-length
study session on the matter. Afterwards,
council voiced its concerns on moving
forward with such action without a
formal plan as to the citys long-term
needs for fire protection services.
Several councilors seemed interested in
discussing a smaller-scale fire services
program focused primarily on EMS
services. Further comments included
contracting with either Fire District 2 or 3
for services, to purchasing smaller service
vehicles, and the viability of upgrading
the existing station. Council touched
on the concept of hiring a professional
consultant to study the issue as well as
directing Chief Hull to formulate a long-
range plan for the department.
Prevention of death and disability
secondary to acute coronary syndromes is
also an issue of time. The American Heart
Association 2005 guidelines for CPR and
Emergency Cardiac Care emphasize the
importance of shortening response time to
suspected cardiac arrest patients. If brain
tissues are deprived of oxygen, they will
begin to die within four to six minutes.
For that reason, it is imperative to begin
resuscitation measures as soon as possible.
Highlights of the 2005 American
Heart Association Guidelines for
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and
Emergency Cardiovascular Care, found
that defibrillation was most effective if
it was provided within six minutes of
the patients initial collapse. The study
also found the following: Effectiveness
decreased significantly as the interval
between cardiac arrest and defibrillation
increased between 6 and 11 minutes. And
after 11 minutes, the odds of patient survival
were extremely poor. The odds of patient
survival were doubled if ALS (paramedic)
care was provided alongside BLS
(layperson/police officer/EMT) defibrillation
at all points prior to 11 minutes.
The American College of Emergency
Physicians noted that for every minute
of cardiac arrest, the chance of survival
decreases up to 10 percent. Fire
Departments and EMS systems should
attempt to achieve travel times of 3-4
minutes for medical first response and
4-6 minutes for advanced life support.
Our Fire Departments average response
time from 911 activation to units on scene
is 4 minutes for (ALS / BLS) care within
City limits of Jacksonville 24 hours a
day 365 days a year. This is something
that everyone in the community of
Jacksonville should be proud of.
Insurance Services Office (ISO)The
ISO is a national insurance engineering
service organization that assigns a
public protection classification (PPC) to
jurisdictions based on fire department
services. Insurance companies typically
establish insurance rates for individual
occupancies or groups of occupancies
based on the PPC.
PPCs are established using the ISOs Fire
Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS). Once
widely used by fire departments to evaluate
system performance, the FSRSs use is
somewhat limited in that it only evaluates
fire protection (not EMS, which most
fire departments now provide to some
degree). Also, the FSRS does not consider
efficiency (e.g., how many resources are
deployed in comparison to the number of
actual calls). Though not as widely used
now, ISO ratings are still appropriate to
consider as part of a more comprehensive
system performance review.

 A Cup of Conversation

W
e recently watched a Netflix
production called Jerry
(before) Seinfeld. The iconic
comedian showed his genius once again
by revisiting where it all began. Aside
from initially laughing our tails off, I was
reminded of a time long forgotten but
then stopped laughing. Jerry quipped
about growing up in the 1960s, how kids
freely roamed the neighborhoods from
dusk to dawn with little or no parental
supervision. Therefore, Jerry concludes,
parents never really liked their children
back in the day. Laugh, laughchuckle,
chuckle. Seinfeld made comedic hay out of
the irony of then compared to now but the
truth is we live in a far darker time today.
Our children are not safe. No healthy-
minded parent would dream of allowing
a child to aimlessly wander unsupervised
urban, suburban even rural streets
like we used to enjoy doing. What has
changed in a generation? How is it
possible 1 in 5 girls today experience
sexual abuse? How is it possible sex
trafficking is alive and prospering in our
own backyard and up and down the
I-5 corridor? Traffickers imprison lost,
runaway girls aged eleven to seventeen
in rape houses right here in the Medford
area. The sex-slave girls are moved from
city to city insuring fresh inventory for
an established clientele. These depraved
customers are our neighbors. This too is
not a misprint. Law enforcement cant
keep up yet only narcissist pigs like
Harvey abusing Hollywood starlets make
it into the news cycle. I guess local sex-
trafficking is not sexy enough to make it
to the front pages of our awareness.
Thirty years ago, the official word out
of the White House on the subject of
drugs was just say no. Today, ask any
law enforcement officer about the war
on drugs and theyll say we lost the war
decades ago. According to the same local
enforcement agencies, White City is the
Meth Capital of the world. White City?
Again, not a misprint. State legislation
just made recreational marijuana use
legal from seed to smoke. This isnt the
same weed we saw in the 1960s, by
the way. Those thinking this law will
not negatively impact every aspect of
public and private life are high on their
own supply. From property values

Voices of the Applegate, of course! Hope
Harrison, our energetic and exciting

Sugar Plum Fairy," the concert will be a
show-stopper. In addition to some very
listenable, familiar Christmas pieces,
we will sing a soul-moving rendition of

to escalated drug use, everythings
changing and not for the better.
Gratuitous violence is the new
normal. Video games to primetime
cable and network television, shocking
violence and perversion for the sake
of entertainment is standard fare for
our youth, yet we gasp when some
psychopath in Las Vegas grabs a real gun.
My eleven-year-old nephew was a child
prodigy at Call of Duty. Before puberty
even hit, he killed tens of thousands
of virtual enemies with every weapon
known to human-kind. Each kill was
amplified by cries of wounded agony
and massive blood splatter. The carnage
became a staple in his mental diet until
the day I took him to the shooting range
and showed him the real, destructive
power of a high-power weapon. After
letting him feel the brute force hed so
casually wielded in virtually realty, he
trembled while carefully releasing the
weapon back in my hands. I didnt
know was all he could say for the rest
of the day. Call of Duty took on a whole
new meaning. Video games were never
the same for him.
So here we are reaping a poison
harvest of political and societal policy
making all things evil acceptable. We do
have some standards left like forbidding
any mention of God in schools, courts or
the publicly-funded domain. After all,
some things are sacred in the religion of
the state. What have we done?
The good news is healthy revolution
found in the American Declaration
of Independence is here. The silent,
slumbering majority of good and decent
people are rubbing the sleep from their
eyes. Its for every citizen to speak up, not
cowing into mute fear of being labeled

Farmers are busy with harvest
and preparation for next years
growing season, the leaves are busy
turning color, and the squirrels are
focused on storing away food for the
approaching winter.
Other events that occur at this
time each year involve insurance and
money, and the various time frames to
remember. Here are a few:
MedicareOctober 15-December 7:
This time frame is the Medicare Annual
Election Period. It is the window of
opportunity to enroll in, or make changes
to a Medicare Advantage Health Plan or
Medicare Prescription Plan. If you are
Medicare eligible and need guidance with
choosing a plan, or changing an existing
plan, give us a call and well help you.
Individual Health (Non-Medicare)
November 1-December 15: This time
frame is the opportunity to enroll or
change an Individual Health Insurance
Plan for those not yet eligible for
Medicare. This is part of the Affordable
Care Act, which many refer to as
ObamaCare. Take notice that the time
frame is shorter than in previous years.
Outside of this time frame, you may not
enroll in an individual health plan except
through special circumstances.

624 miles was about max but Id
sneak over 600 miles regularly. Two,
13-gallon tanks at 24 mpg said that
was how far I could drive my 1987
Ford Ranger without refueling. Once
I managed to stretch it to 640 because
I had no other option but to pray and
drive. Back then I was covering 300-500
miles a day in rural Oregon territory
that had lots of cows but not many gas
stations. That prodigious range still had
me visiting the gas station almost every
other day. At 5:30 in the morning Id run
into folks like Mike Winters, before he
was county sheriff, and wed solve the
worlds problems to the background
hum of the pumps and the clicking of the
mechanical fuel gauges. While we talked,
we gave our rigs the once over: wash the
windshield, check the engine oil, look
for a low tire. With the worlds problems
at bay, it was gas cap on and back in the
pickup with a half gallon Thermos of
coffee, a box of Snickers bars and rolls
of blueprints for the projects we were

be home by 6:30 for dinner. Other days
were why I carried the Snickers bars. As
I rolled out onto the highway, the gas
gauge pointing to full told me I was
good to go. I liked that feeling.
These days I notice how I appreciate

clean clothes in the closet. Ive got the
best friends in the world, kids that like
me most of the time, my pickup starts
every morning and I can still handle
a motorcycle. As I consider how well
cared-for and blessed I am, I cant help
but be grateful. God has truly been good
to me all these years. I hope all of you
enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving with
your families as we enter another holiday
season. Something about this time of year
just seems to help folks be mindful of
how lucky most of us are. And as for me,
well, Im really tank full.

The Sellers Side of Closing
on a Home
W
hat happens during the escrow
period after a buyer and seller
enter a purchase agreement?
As the seller, you may think you won't
have to do much during this time except
sit back and wait; however, there is
considerable work that needs to be done
before you can sell that home! Although
each transaction is unique, this article
explains the steps of what goes on in a
typical transaction for a seller.
1. Once you have come to an agreement
and all parties have signed the sales
contract, you are officially in escrow.
2. Escrow is opened with a title
company. Your broker opens escrow
by sending a copy of the sales
contract & any addendums to the
title company, as well as all parties
involved.
3. Your broker will verify the buyers
earnest money has been deposited as
per the sales contract.
4. Your broker will ensure that either
proof of funds (if this is a cash
purchase), or a pre-approval letter is
provided as per the terms of the sales
contract.
5. Your broker will keep in contact
with the other agent about any
inspections that that were requested
in the inspection addendum. This
most commonly includes a home
inspection, pest report, and in rural
areas, pumping of the septic tank
and a septic inspection, as well as a
well flow report and water-quality
testing. The buyers agent typically
attends these inspections; however,
your agent may be called upon
occasionally to open the house, if
needed.
6. Based upon the results of the
inspections, further negotiations and/
or repairs (repair addendum) may
be necessary if the buyer requests
repairs. Copies of any signed
addendums need to be provided to
the title company and buyers agent,
if applicable. Your agent may assist
you with coordinating any needed
repairs. Once the requested repairs
have been completed, your broker
typically provides receipts of the
repairs to the buyers agent.
7. A seller disclosure form, in which
the seller discloses any known issues
about the property, is provided
to the buyers agent. The buyers
typically have 5 business days to

Joan and Chuck joined the
Jacksonville Presbyterian Church soon
after moving here, and Joan has served
as both a Deacon and an Elder for the
church in addition to volunteering
for many church activities, including
re-enacting for three summers an
old fashioned strawberry festival to
help pay off the mortgage for the
new church. In 2010 Joan lost Chuck
to Parkinsons disease and soon after
moved into Pioneer Village where

True to form, Joan has remained an

T
he Friends of the Arboretum would
like to thank all the volunteers who
spent time this October cleaning-
up the CC Beekman Arboretum. Its
amazing what a difference a couple of
dozen hands, working for a couple of
hours, can make. The transformation of
the CC Beekman Arboretum over the
past two years would not be possible
without its volunteers.
We would like to encourage walkers,
hikers, and families to go for a walk
through the CC Beekman Arboretum.
Notice the cleared creek, ready for the
seasonal rains. A fresh layer of bark dust
smooths out the deer tracks and natural
erosion. Many of the trees and shrubs
have received a trim, which will help
with new growth in the spring. Please
also think of the tasks that go unnoticed,
such as the drip irrigation that has
supported the growth of the plantings
throughout the summer. The irrigation
has been a great challenge, but thanks to
a few individuals with the knowledge
and willingness, water loss is kept to a
minimum and the plants are surviving.
The Arboretum Shelter Project is
anticipated to break-ground soon.
Community member Tony Hess has
been working closely with our co-chairs
Kandee McClain and Becka Kem, and
the City of Jacksonville to build a 12
x 16 foot shelter in the old parking
lot area up behind the waterfall. The
shelter will have a concrete floor
and room for two picnic tables and
perimeter benches. The Friends of
the Arboretum is looking forward to
community use of the space by school
groups, hiking groups, and picnickers.
All these efforts of renewal and
maintenance are to breathe new life into
the CC Beekman Arboretum and make
it a destination for residents and visitors
of Jacksonville. Our vision is to create
an Arboretum with maintained gardens
and plantings, as well as native species
growing naturally. Upcoming projects
include preparing the maintained areas
around the waterfall for the Jacksonville
Boosters bi-annual Home Tour that
will be held in May 2018. We are also
working with Kenda Swartz of Bee City
Jacksonville and Kristina Lefever of
Pollinator Project Rogue Valley to create
a pollinator garden.

ometimes its easier to begin with a
clean slate when youre embarking
on a landscape construction project,
but often there are important existing
landscape features that benefit the final
results by incorporating them into your
new outdoor space.
Existing decks, fences, pools, and
large trees are common elements in
a landscape that typically remain for
several reasons. Large trees (depending
on the species) are usually great assets
in a landscape plan. Replacing them
can take years to replace the beauty and
shade they create, making leaving them a
serious consideration.
If an existing deck or fence is in good
condition, it may be good to consider
tweaking the design and shape and or
looking into refurbishing or replacing
the deck/fence boards themselves with
a newer materials.
Blending the old with the new takes
planning and paying attention to existing
details. The overall style and architecture
of your home is important to consider,
especially here in Jacksonville. What are
the major themes inside and outside?
What are the dominate architectural lines
of the house? How will the new landscape
need to be installed, considering these
important factors, and your goals for new
outdoor living spaces?
Considering these things in the design
and planning stages will make all the
difference in the finished product.
When the project is complete, the
hope and goal is an outdoor area that
connects stylistically and architecturally
with your home and the landscape
elements that remained, and also
the new landscape areas that were
introduced. Finding the best elements
that exist in a landscape and blending
them with the new project can bring
greater aesthetic reward than simply
creating a project from a clean slate.

My dad used to say, You can have it
when I am done with it, and we knew
that meant upon his death. That is how
it is with most everyone and we respect
our parents belongings, their cherished
items, their memories, their history.
I like to stress in my articles that If
you have it, use it. I say this in order
to encourage people to make their
cherished items the familys cherished
items. Talk about what it is, where it
came from, whose it was, why you
have it and why you love it. Bring it
out, let the young ones touch it, use it,
become familiar with it, sit on it, walk
on it, eat off it, drink out of it, put
flowers in it.
What is in those drawers, the jewel
box, the closet, the attic, the garage? If
we diligently commit to cleaning out,
throwing out, and giving out, I know our
children will have an easier time of it.
Think about gifting some of the
heirlooms this holiday season; help your
family think about and plan for the who,
what, and where of it all.
Research ahead of time what can be
donated and what can be sold. Find
reputable dealers and charities to be
called upon to help with the process. You
will be pleased to find that the landfill is
not the only answer to the problem.

Jacksonvilles school campus is open

Home for the Holidays:
A Survival Guide
I
ts November, time for Thanksgiving
gatherings and the annual viewing
of one of my favorite movies, Home
for the Holidays. I love this movie not just
because of the terrific ensemble of actors,
but because it depicts family holidays
in such a realistic and comical light: the
rifts and rivalries, the tensions and love,
and the way we both know and dont
know the people we call family. If you
havent ever seen it, you really must,
particularly if you are one of those people
for whom the approach of the annual
Thanksgiving gathering generates not
gratitude but a vague sinking sort of
feeling accompanied by thoughts of a
beach somewhere in Mexico.
I know exactly one person who loves
getting together with family for the
holidays. She tells of wonderful parents and
siblings and spouses who actually like one
another and who sit around laughing and
drinking cider and playing Yahtzee. I dont
buy this story for one minute, but I nod
and smile. During one memorable family
gathering of mine, my mother looked at me
across the table and remarked, Kate, you
look just like Meg Ryan with that haircut.
And then she added, I hate Meg Ryan.
For many of us, the holidays evoke
more stress than gratitude, and for good
reason. From the pleasures of holiday
travel to the joy of being confined in a
small space with people who havent
gone to counseling, who drink too much
or not at all, who carry grudges and
have memories like elephantsits an
ordeal. And still we gather, entertaining
the vague wish that this time it might be
different. Weve had therapy. We can do
this. Were not going to let them get to us
this time and then they do.
Family is equipped like no one else on the
planet to stir up all the psychic debris you
thought youd gotten rid of. They do this by
treating you as they always have. They do it
by seeing you not as who you are, but who
you are to them. Before you know it, you
find yourself transformed into a small and
terrible person, a person you do not wish to
be, a person you arent, or are you?
Family is tough, people. It just is. And
I believe it is, in large part, because our
family is here to facilitate our spiritual
growth. Frequently they do this by being
truly dreadful. It can take some serious
spiritual jujitsu to maintain your mental
and emotional equilibrium when youre
in the middle of the madness, much less
recognize how you might learn and grow
from it.

estled between charcoal hills, a

stars, lies Jacksonville. On a drive
like this, with no other people milling
about or cars lining the streets, I feel like a
time traveler. I ease my car through throngs
of women in skirts dusting the ground,
and through groups of men with tall hats.

This town is special, I hear one

Sharing the Role of Caregiving
S
haring caregiving with your
siblings can be simple and
fairly effortless. Or it can be
a constant challenge. While I have
taken on the caregiving of my father by myself, my
husband managed to work with his siblings to give their
mother continuous, comfortable care during the last
years of her life.
My husband started caregiving when his father was
diagnosed with cancer 25 years ago. His mom was still
in good health, and she was the main caregiver, but
Brian helped when and where he could. We lived near
his parents, whereas his siblings lived farther away, so
he was the obvious co-caregiver.
When Brians mom had her quadruple bypass five
years later, she lived near Brians sister Mary, so their

AMD is caused by a combination of genetic,
environmental and lifestyle risk factors. For example,
smoking increases the risk of AMD, while eating leafy
greens and fish, such as salmon, halibut, and tuna,
may reduce the risk. Up to the point, researchers had
identified 21 regions of the genomecalled locithat
influence the risk of AMD. The new research, published
in Nature Genetics, brings the number up to 34 loci.
The International AMD Genomics Consortium, which
includes 26 centers worldwide, collected and analyzed
the genetic data from 43,566 people of predominantly
European ancestry to systematically identify common
and rare variations in genetic codingcalled variants
associated with AMD. Common variants generally have
an indirect association with a disease. Rare variants, by
contrast, are more likely to alter protein expression or
function and therefore have a direct or causal association
with a disease. Rare variants were defined as those found
in less than 1 percent of the study population.
The researchers have now discovered a total of 52
genetic variants that are associated with AMD. These
variants are located among 34 loci, 16 of which had not
been previously associated with AMD. For the first time
the researchers also identified a variant specific to the
neovascular form of AMD, which may point to reasons
why therapy for this form of AMD is effective for some
people but not everyone.

shopping, medical emergencies, medical appointments,
household chores, laundry, meals? Who takes care of the
bills, banking, insurance?
So what happens if you want to share the
responsibility with your siblings, but theyre not
interested? Maybe they are entirely career-focused, live
far away or dont think they could handle the weight
of caregiving responsibility. Or maybe its just not
their thing and despite loving their parent, they cant
envision giving hands-on help. I suggest at least trying
to see it from your siblings point of view. Some people
just dont have the emotional skillspatience, empathy,
understanding, a nurturing temperamentor the
inclination to be a caregiver. (Even those of us who can
muster it find it extremely daunting!) Some cant bear to
see their previously able-bodied parent in a fragile state,
or are overwhelmed by their own fears of death and loss.
So even though your sibling might be extremely capable
in their own life, you may just have to trust them when
they say they know themselves well enough to recognize
that they wouldnt be able to provide the quality of care
that they want for their loved one. This does not make
them unloving, they just cant do it. Rather than giving
up on them completely, as the main caregiver, you can
explore whether they are able to assist in other ways,
possibly with handling finances, or pitching in with
hiring help so that you can get out on occasion.
Do some caregivers resent that their siblings have left
the caregiving solely to them? Many of the caregivers
Ive spoken to can answer with a resounding Yes!
But even more, they tire of their siblings questioning
their needs, and the needs of their parent. When you
are the main caregiver, and you see your parent every
day, you know intimately what their needs are. And
often when friends or siblings visit your parent, your
parent livens up, acts more capable and independent
than they are, and your siblings just dont pick up on
the small nuances that you see. Trust me, seems to be
all you can say to these siblings, while trying not to let
resentment take over.
Meanwhile, its in your best interest to have
understanding and compassion for your siblings,
whether you are co-caregiving or not, and even if
you disagree with them. Be sure to voice your needs
and listen to theirs. If the conflict persists and begins
to threaten your ability to give care, you may want
to consider bringing in a professional (meeting with
a therapist). Dont forget as a sole caregiver or co-
caregiver, your mental and physical health is crucial and
non-negotiable.

tried and true recipe for a Joy-Full Life.
At this time of year we are reminded to
cultivate one of the main ingredients for
this recipe: gratitude.
Before we start, it is important
for you to know that all the current
circumstances in your life are simply a
result of what you bring into your mind
and hold in your heart. In a time of crisis
we can be quick to judge
others and ourselves
and look for reasons and
solutions outside ourselves
for whatever is going
wrong. The statement

put in, we get out. It can
be challenging to find our
way out of the negative

up to the healing opportunity in the

1. Acceptance: What we resist persists.
Most of the pain and suffering we
experience comes from how we relate

As we let go of the resistance, blame
and judgments, we can open to healing

yourself for holding the story in your

November Rains
T
he rains return to wash the smoky
air. A sweet fragrance rises from
the heavy layer of summers
discarded madrone leaves and bark.
Dogwoods become crimson, big-
leafed maples brilliant yellow. Falls
mushrooms push upward through the
brightly carpeted forest floor and bloom
in their unique ways. The seasons cycle
through another year in our local woods.
Those dusty trails of last month
become a distant memory as the marbles
on a cookie sheet granitic soils repack
and become firmer underfoot. The
rock-hard shale soils become slick with
moisture and begin to stick to soles.
Puddles form in low spots and dormant
springs and seeps renew their life-giving
moisture. No more trail flour on the
shoes as soft areas repack.
The brilliant monkey flowers give
way to nondescript seedpods while
poison oak produces its cashew-like nut.
Madrone berries and manzanita (little
apples) fruits ripen and redden, ready
to provide fuel for robins and coyotes.
Acorns fall to be collected by squirrels
and jays, buried and forgotten, to sprout
at another time to replenish the forest.
Cones from the ponderosas litter the
forest floor to be dribbled along like so
many soccer balls.
There is a pregnant pause in the
atmosphere as Earths north axis tilts
farther away from Sols sustaining
energy. Whispering winds in the forest
canopy wait as well, not brave enough
to be blustery quite yet, knowing the
cold winter blast will arise soon enough.
Once brave reptiles flee the paths for
their winter burrows, prey scarcer now
in the shortening days. Insects complete
seasonal life-cycles, their carcasses

crews, volunteer workers, and grants
from the Schwemm Family
Foundation, BLM, and
REI, is already popular.
The first half of the trail

mile walk with spectacular
views of the valley below
and Siskiyou Mountains
beyondhas been well-
used since the trail opened
earlier this summer.
However, the half of
the trail that ends at
Highway 238, between
Longanecker and Forest
Creek roads, has seen less activity,
mostly because (1) the trail goes uphill
from the trailhead, making hiking
more difficult, and (2) parking is slim
at Highway 238, discouraging a shuttle
between trailheads.
So ATA is delighted to announce that,
thanks to a grant from Travel Oregon,
we will start building a trailhead at
Highway 238, with clearly-visible signs,
ample parking, a kiosk, and a picnic
table, this winter.
We are glad that Travel Oregon
understands that hiking, biking, and
equestrian trails can "inspire travel
that drives sustainable economic
development," as the Travel Oregon
mission statement puts it. "By supporting
these innovative projects (such as the
trailhead for the East ART)," said Travel
Oregon's CEO, Todd Davidson, "we are
better able to share the stories of Oregon's
people and places, deliver world-class
littering the leaf litter, decomposing in
turn to nourish the loamy soils where
their eggs overwinter.
Its the best time to take that leaf hike
up Jackson Creek. A favorite autumn
loop is the brown diamond hike
from parking area P3 in Forest Park.
Depending on the return route, this hike
can be 3-5 miles, (longer if started at P2
to avoid the nasty Norling Road. steep
area). Proceeding up Jackson Creek
Nature Trail, hikers encounter a trail
buried in brilliantly bright yellow maple
leaves with a few crimson dogwoods
tossed in for contrast. Meandering along
re-awakening Jackson Creek, the gentle
climb crosses a few well-placed logs left
to discourage renegade mountain bikers.
Heavy moss decorates the venerable
maples and oyster mushrooms bloom on
the decaying trunks of alders. Arriving at
the top of the trail, hikers have options.
Does one return on Jackson Creek Trail
or turn left and head up toward Jackson
Ridge? Sofies Trail bears left as one
starts to climb and traverses the slope
to rejoin Jackson Ridge Trail as it winds
down to P5, Canyon Falls Trail, and a
return to P3. Climbing to the top, Jackson
Ridge Trail follows the ridgeline down

turn takes you down through a madrone
forest to Sofies Trail, a right turn takes
you through a mixed oak woodland

concerted effort going on to create a
dog park in Jacksonville. And Sarah
Maple, one of the lead
organizers, wants
our dog park to be an
award-winning one.

is ADA accessible, the
park will be suitable for
everyone. There will be

we can train our dogs as well as let them
play. And dont forget how a place like
this can foster community spirit. People
will gather together to talk dogs or
whatever is on their mind, making new
friendships or enriching old ones. And

Few persons in the States, except
returned Californians or Oregonians,
can form any idea of a life in the mines
in the summer season. The trading
posts are the only houses, and some
of them only tents. The miners cook
for themselves (no women)cooking
utensils consist of camp kettle and
frying pan, which together with pick,
shovel and gold pan form a miner's
outfitsleep on the ground, with only
a blanket for bed and bedding. In the
rainy season they build up log houses to
cook and sleep in, and work out in the
rain and mud more than half the winter.
The goods are packed to this place,
about one hundred miles, on mules,
about three hundred [pounds] to a
mule, and from twenty to one hundred
in a train, which are never tied up and
fed, but turned loose at night to hunt
their own food.
The Indians here are very lazy, but
few of them will work. They go from
camp to camp with their children tied to
a board and hung on the squaw's back,
every day, begging for food. There are
many different tribes in Oregon, and
nearly all speak a different language.
The Chinook jargon, a language
said to be introduced amongst them
by the Hudson Bay Company, is
understood by most of them. The
whites soon learn it, and so can
readily converse with the natives, but
few of them learn our language.

with Kriselle Cellars

Call it kismet. The owner of an upscale travel company affiliated with a premier
river cruise line joins the wine club of a top-drawer Southern Oregon winery. In
casual conversation with winery management, he proposes an intriguing idea: taking
that winerys Bordeaux varietals and tasting them side-by-side with their French
counterpartsin Bordeaux.
Thats how Kriselle Cellars Director Nora Lancaster explains the genesis of a

Along with 25 cases of Kriselle vintages specifically chosen for cruise events,
Steingraber provided wine education through onboard lectures and tastings that
explored Bordeaux and Southern Oregon as distinct places with distinct terroir.
We discussed the differences in the wines while tasting side-by-side. The French
wines used for comparison werent just from the region in general but from the very
neighborhoods the ship was transitingyoud look out the lounge windows at vines
as far as the eye could seeand a few castles. Kriselles ripe characteristics showed
through slightly fuller body, richer fruit flavors and abundant natural acidity. The
French wines showed a softer expression consistent with the classic earth/mineral
highlights for which Old World wines are prized.
Besides a total immersion wine experience, the cruise featured what Lancaster
describes as food so beautifully presented you had to take a pictureI could hardly
bear to stick a fork in. The traditionally-trained French chef onboard created a wine
pairing dinner featuring Kriselle vintages. We loved the creamy brie and gruyere
soup they made to go with Ditani, our proprietary Bordeaux blend. They were kind
enough to share the recipe which we brought back for our Cellar Society.
Each day featured multiple shore excursions including hikes geared to various
exertion levels, biking or vehicular tours, and wine tastings. One stop even offered a
visit to prehistoric caves. Wine tourism is different in Bordeaux, Lancaster points
out. Its largely by appointment only, but many chateaux have a nice relationship
with AmaWaterways and would do special things and make accommodations for our
