3. INTRODUCTION

The E-Val Flex Thermal Validation cable system is designed for validation applications that
require compliance with FDA guidelines and international GMP standards. The ValSuite software
keeps a complete database on all aspects of validation requirementstracking thermocouples,
calibration reports, test setup, data analysis, specific user access, and final compliance reports.

The E-Val Flex Modules can be used in any combination of Master and expansion modules, but
there must always be a Master in the configuration. When using more than one E-Val Flex
module, an Ethernet switch or hub is needed. If only one E-Val Flex module is being used, the
module can be directly connected to the computer Ethernet port with a crossover cable or
alternatively via USB using the USB/LAN adaptor.

4. E-VAL FLEX MODULE

4.1 Master Module

The E-Val Flex module is a small, intelligent instrument. It is possible to configure the module
using the keyboard and display. The Master module works as a stand-alone or as network
master. Once the module has been started, it can be disconnected and used as a stand- alone
unit. The module can handle up to 16 temperature sensors and 4 external sensors via RS485
port. The external sensors are connected via the RS485 communication port. If more than one
external sensor needs to be connected, it is necessary to have an Ellab Multibox interface with
four RS485 ports. To measure according to specifications, insert the probes, power up the
module, and wait at least 1 minute before starting data collection.

6.3 Slipring contact

The slipring contact is used to facilitate temperature, rotation and deformation in rotating
retorts. The slipring contact is mounted on the drive shaft of the rotating autoclave. The
probes are introduced through the shaft via a packing gland and led into the probe sockets
of the revolving part of the contact, which has a nylon bar to prevent rotation. The
stationary part has a locking screw (8mm ) for fixing the contact to a suitable connection
piece fitted to the drive shaft. The slipring contacts accept (Cu/CuNI) Type T (NBS561)
thermocouple probes only.
The rotation sensor on the slipring contact is connected to the E-Val Flex module through
the RS485 and the R-Flex Module. Slipring contacts are available with 4, 6, 8, 12 and 16
channels.

A. A tray holding device (1) is manufactured according to the type and size of the
container, and for this purpose a sample of the container(s) has to be sent to Ellab.
See examples below for process setup.

B. The container is fixed with a stainless steel plate, and the holding device is
fastened with four screws, so it will not move around during processing.

C. The SHD stainless steel support (2) is positioned on top of the holding device so
that the clamp (3) is positioned at the measuring point wanted, and then fastened
with four screws.
For plastic trays, holding devices are available with up to three measuring points
(top, bottom and side) for establishing the most optimal process parameters.

D. The LVDT deflection transducer (4) is then introduced into the autoclave chamber
and positioned in the SHD stainless steel support tray, and the complete device is
positioned at the spot wanted. Normally the unit is placed in retort/autoclave with
a typical load. The position need to be stable during the process to avoid false
results. The transducer need to be able to move up and down. Normally the
maximum value on how much the packing will expand during the process is
important.
E. The LVDT deflection transducer cable is then connected to a D-Flex module (5)
which again is connected to the RS485 port at the E-Val Flex master module.
