ASSIGNMENT BRIEF SCREEN WRITING 2 (MDB 111)

On completion of this course, student should be able to:

1.0 Acquire an understanding on the screenwriting process and structure.


2.0 Acquire the ability to construct effective narrative scripts that include character
development, conflict and plots.
3.0 Skilful in the new era of scriptwriting by learning how to use shots and other film
languages to represent the concept of the script.
4.0 Acquire the understanding and the skill of constructing a story based from a
concept and a single idea.
1.0 Understanding the principle of the final stage in pre-production.

ASSIGNMENT 1 (INDIVIDUAL)(10%)

TITLE: PITCHING IDEA (BASED ON ADAPTATION TEXT) FOR SHORT FILM

This is an individual assignment. Every student must prepare adaptation idea taken from any
establish/printed short story. Student must implement theory of adaptation ideas where by 80%
of storyline must adapted from original text. Therefore, student has to prepare presentation
slides for their pitching session and the outline of content are as listed below:

i. Title of story

ii. Genre

iii. Synopsis of story

iv. Diagram Plot Structure

Student must pitch all their ideas one by one and convey the plot diagram effectively to make
sure all audience and lecturer understand their story. Lecturer will select the best idea during
pitching session. Student will proceed with the idea for final project after get approval from
lecturer.

Assesment Mark (10%):

Format : 2 marks

Originality of idea : 3 marks

Content : 5 marks

Prepare 1 minutes script for tvc by using two column format scripts.

ASSIGNMENT 3(INDIVIDUAL) (10%)

TITLE: DIAGRAM OF PLOT STRUCTURE

Every student should prepare elaboration and diagram of 3 Act Structure for Film Laskar
Pelangi as screened by lecturer in tutorial class. Details explanation should include all elements
of 3 Act Structure as mentioned in the diagram below:

ASSIGNMENT 4 (INDIVIDUAL) (10%)

TITLE: INDEX CARD

Based on approved idea of short film, every student should prepare an index card. The index
card is representation of content of action in every single scene. Student should prepare the
index card according on their plot structure to make sure the flow of ideas is smooth and
interesting.

Assessment Mark:

Format: 3 marks

Arrangement of content: 5 marks

Neatness: 2 marks

TITLE: PRESENTATION OF INDEX CARD

Student should present their index card scene by scene and put effort to attract lecturer
attention. They supposed to treat lecturer as their financier where by their situation is they have
to get financer to finance their short film. Therefore, all students have to make sure their
financier interested with their story ideas. At the same time, student learnt on how to prepare
index card correctly.

PROJECT (40%)

TTITLE: SHORT FILM SCRIPT (40%)

Every student must prepare their own script for short film based on adaptation idea has been
approved by lecturer. Compulsory for students to implement three act structure of plot and
character development as they had been studies in previous class to show their understanding.

The script must contain 12 scenes to 15 scenes for 15 minutes duration related to social drama
genre with the student original approach of plot structure. The student must develop the story
which background happened in one day with help by three main characters. The script must
provide moral values which will benefits the audience. The script should be done in the correct
format of short film script as taught by lecturer. Therefore, the script that they drafted for first or
second draft of script should be finalize and submitted as final script.

Assessment Mark:

First Draft script : 10 marks

2nd draft script : 10 marks

Final script submission: 20 marks
