1.1 Biomed Welcome to the Biomed Academy Rabold

Objectives:SWBAT:

-describe course guidelines and objectives -explain safety guidelines of the classroom
-list characteristics of living things
-organize a heirarchy of order in the living world
-summarize the organization of the program

Standards: Introduction

Process:

Welcome and introductions.

Syllabus and guidelines. Discuss and answer questions.

Fire/Tornado/Emergency situations.

Safety equipment location.

Book distribution.

Room Set-up.

Speed dating

Research-Students in pairs brainstorm the Properties of Life, and the


Organization of Living Things (given list). If time discuss these.
Closure: Discussion of the above and answers to student questions will close this
lesson.

HW: Review Chapter 2 , get goggles, review book website and Biomed wiki.

Objectives:SWBAT:

-identify properties of the periodic table


-draw molecular formulas for chemical compounds
-relate formulas to bonding patterns
-bond chemical elements to form compounds
-define basic chemistry terms

Closure: Discussion of and completion of the practice problems, research protocol.

1.3, 1.4, 1.5 BioMed The Nature of Water Rabold

Objectives:SWBAT:

-describe partial charges on covalent molecules


-identify the polar nature of water
-explain characteristics of water which make it unique, important to life, and a
universal solvent-relate the ionization of water to the pH level of solutions

Standards: I4.B.1: Interactions between molecules affect their structure and


function.

Process:

Day 1-Lecture/Discussion-The nature of water.

Introduce problem- What is the affect of adding small amounts of weak acids and
bases on the pH of tap water, and liver homogenate?

Discuss Scientific Research Protocol.

Read Mini-Lab Report Information and Example in the tools section at


dcsbiomedacademy.wikispaces.com

Complete lab chapter 1,2 for the above problem in notebook and begin mini
report

Day 2- Art

Lecture-Properties of water.

pH Lab-Discussion of procedure, safety. Complete lab chapter 3.

Using Excel worksheet

Day 3-

pH Lab data collection and analysis. Complete lab chapters 3 and 4.

Work on finishing mini report.


Closure: Discussion of the lab. Student questions and answers.

HW: Study. Read Ch. 3, 4 Complete guided reading for Chapter 3, pH lab mini report
due Friday (charts and graphs in Excel embedded in mini-report).

Materials: liver, 0.1M NaOH, 0.1M HCl, distilled water, pH 7 buffer, pH meters
Consumables: liver, 0.1M NaOH, 0.1M HCl, distilled water, pH 7 buffer, paper, printer
cartridge

Safety: Goggles must be worn during lab. Review safety procedures for use of acids and
bases. Make gloves and aprons available.
