1997-98 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION


Mercedes-Benz Shift Interlock System

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEMS

Steering Lock
1) Steering lock mechanism is designed to prevent ignition
key from being removed when parking lock is not engaged. When parking
lock is not engaged and brake pedal is not operated, locking pawl
rides on outer edge of detent plate. See Fig. 1. Shift and locking
valve are held in position in front of blocking cam against force of
pressure spring from control cables. Ignition switch CAN NOT be turned
to "0" position and key CAN NOT be removed.
2) To remove ignition key, move selector lever to "P"
position and operate brake pedal. Force of tension spring pulls
locking pawl under stop of detent plate and pressure spring pushes
shift and locking valve off blocking cam enabling blocking cam to
turn. See Fig. 2. Ignition switch can now turn to "0" position and key
can be removed.

Parking Lock Interlock


1) Parking lock interlock interacts with steering lock.
Parking lock interlock prevents selector lever from being moved out of
"P" position when ignition key is turned to "0" position and brake
pedal is not operated. See Fig. 2.
2) When ignition switch is turned to "1" position, blocking
cam in steering lock releases control cable. See Fig. 1. When brake
pedal is operated, locking lever is turned downward, tension spring at
brake pedal is tensioned and release lever is released. Force of
pressure spring No. 2 overrides lower spring force of pressure spring
No. 1 and pulls shift and locking valve in front of blocking cam.
Locking pawl turns and lifts off detent plate. Parking lock is now
able to be released.

ADJUSTMENTS

SHIFT INTERLOCK CABLES

Steering Lock Cable & Parking Lock Interlock Cable With


Adjusters At Brake Pedal
Turn ignition switch to "1" position. Apply brake pedal to
furthest travel and hold. Place shift selector lever in "D" position.
Adjust parking lock cable by depressing adjusting button. See Fig. 3.
With ignition switch turned to "0" position and shift selector lever
in "P" position, depress adjusting button to adjust steering lock
cable.

Adjuster At Transmission
Shift selector lever must be in "P" position and ignition
switch turned to "0" position for all adjustments. Adjust steering
lock cable first by depressing adjusting button. Adjust parking lock
interlock cable by depressing adjusting button located at rear of
transmission. See Fig. 4.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

SHIFT INTERLOCK CABLES

NOTE: Adjust both parking lock interlock and steering lock cables
after installation.

Steering Lock Cable


Remove cover below left side of instrument panel. Unhook
cable from steering lock by pressing in locking tongues and pressing
in against steering lock. See Fig. 5. Remove stoplamp switch and
unhook steering lock cable from release lever. Compress locking device
and push steering lock cable upwards and out of pedal bearing bracket.
Remove steering lock cable. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Parking Lock Interlock Cable With Adjuster At Transmission


1) Shift selector lever must be in "P" position for removal
and installation procedure. Remove cover below left side of instrument
panel. Pull off entrance strip and remove "A" pillar footwell cover.
Remove accelerator pedal from floor panel and remove driver side
flooring. Remove air duct for rear compartment heating.
2) Unhook cable from release lever. Compress locking device
and push cable upwards and out of mount on pedal bearing bracket. See
Fig. 5. Turn cable housing at transmission counterclockwise and pull
cable out of transmission. See Fig. 6. To install, reverse removal
procedure.

Parking Lock Interlock Cable With Adjuster At Brake Pedal


1) Shift selector lever must be in "P" position for removal
and installation procedure. Remove cover below left side of instrument
panel. Pull off entrance strip and remove "A" pillar footwell cover.
Remove accelerator pedal from floor panel and remove driver side
flooring. Remove air duct for rear compartment heating.
2) Unhook cable from release lever. Compress locking device
and push cable upwards and out of mount on pedal bearing bracket. See
Fig. 5. Using screwdriver, pry locking device outward on cable housing
at rear of transmission. Pull cable from transmission. See Fig. 6. To
install, reverse removal procedure.
