Capitalization for Geography

English Language Arts and Social Studies
2nd Grade

Materials: Smart Board, Me on the Map Book, Doc Cam, pencils, letter addressing practice-
worksheet (one per child).

Utah Common Core:

Language Standard 2
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and
spelling when writing.
a. Capitalize holidays, product names, and geographic names.

Essential Questions: Why do we use Maps? Why is it important to know the correct
capitalization for geographic names and punctuation for writing letters?

Personal Objectives: Engage student interest in Geography and help support their correct
capitalization and punctuation.

Introduce the lesson (Phase I):

Gather Students to the Carpet.
Together, using the doc cam to project the image of the book, read Me on the Map.
After, pull up Smart Board and Engage Students in discussion by asking if they traveled
anywhere for Spring Break. Discuss with partners. Ask volunteers to share.
Ask: why do we use maps? (i.e., for travel, when we are lost, for camping, for the
weather, they help us to understand the world around us).
Present simple, color block map of the US. Ask: where are we(state name) on the map?

Discuss the Process: (Transition to Phase II)

Tell students that I am from another state (ex: Jackson, Wyoming). Point out which
letters are capitalized and the state abbreviation.
Share some other examples of cities and states and even countries. Make use of
locations some of your students may originally be from.
Go over rules:
-Capitalize the first letter of cities, states and countries.
-Capitalize the two letters of state abbreviations.
-Place a comma after the name of city, and before the state or country name.
Together, Practice writing in the correct capitals and punctuation.
Create a bank of cities and states for them to use on their own envelope worksheets.
Explain that they will be addressing their own make-believe envelopes using the correct
capitalization and punctuation.
Ask for clarification.

Independent Writing: (Phase II)

Students will return to desks to work independently and address their own envelopes
on worksheet, addressed to their location of choice.
Teacher will move throughout the classroom, assessing students understanding of the
assignment and scaffolding as needed.

Assessment:
Assessment will be of students correct application of capitalization and punctuation on
worksheets.
