The potential and quality of Indonesian seaweed and its derivative products is remarkable and it is also what makes it attractive to many countries in the world. Almost approximately 555 types of seaweed in Indonesia and most of the seaweed products have been exported as dried and processed seaweed. Indonesia seaweed is known for its good quality and much in demand by the industry because it contains a source of high enough jelly and alginate that suitable for use as raw material for food industry, flavor softener, ice cream prevention crystallization and medicine. In addition, seaweed in Indonesia can also be used as raw cutting material for sea cut-gut, porcelain decoration (color binder and plasticizer), cloth industry (color binder), paper industry (lackuer and booster and pelican paper) photography industry (gelatin substitute), medicinal ingredients (medicinal diseases: hyacinth / basedow, rheumatic, cancer, chronic bronchitis / emphysema, scrofula, bile / bladder disorders, kidney, gastric / gastrointestinal ulcers, blood cholesterol reduction, anti hypertension, lose weight, anti oxidants), bio fuel fuel and so forth. The good quality that seaweed has, in addition to its cultivation is done in a way that is good and true, the climate and geography of Indonesia (sunshine, flow, pressure and water quality and salinity) in accordance with the biological needs and growth of seaweed. Indonesia as an archipelagic country with a total of 17,504 islands and 81,000 km coastline length has enormous potential for seaweed commodity development, where its development activities have been carried out across Indonesian waters from Nangroe Aceh Darusalam to Papua. The indicative land area that can be utilized for the cultivation of Indonesian seaweed commodity reaches 769,452 ha. Of that amount, only about 50% or 384,733 ha is effectively utilized, and will continue to be utilized so that the 2014 production target of 10 million tons can be achieved. The increase in Indonesian seaweed exports is due to high demand from Germany, Hong Kong, Chile and the Philippines. In 2010, Indonesia's export quantity to Germany jumped 196.35%, Hongkong 135.84%, Chile 106.76% and Philippines rose 86.74%. In 2012, Indonesia's largest seaweed export destination is China which has 67% or US $ 90 million, followed by Philippines, Chile, Hong Kong and South Korea. Meanwhile, Indonesia's seaweed export destination countries with the highest trend in the period 2008 - 2012 are China, (30.72%), Hong Kong (14.51%), and Vietnam (13.64%).
