Any set of points represent a Linear relation if they form a straight line when plotted on a graph

a) Plot the points (-2, -1), (2, 3), (5, 6) and (7, 8) in the grid given below.

Identify whether the set of points represent linear relation.

If yes, find the linear relation in the form y mx c

Rise
where m is the slope or gradient of the line =
Run

c is the y intercept, that is where the line crosses y axis.

b) Plot the points (-2, 1), (0, 4), (2, 2) and (3,-1) on the same grid above to identify whether they
form a linear relation.

The graph of the equation of the form y = mx +c is a straight line, it is called Linear
Equation.
Write the slope m and y intercept of the following Linear equations.
a) y 3 x 4

1
b) y x 3
2

c) y x 2
Re wrting the following in the form y mx c to find the slope and y intercept
d ) 2 y 6x 4

e) 3 y 4 x 1

f ) 3x 6 y 2

To draw the graph of the linear equation y x2
3

Step1.

Identify the slope m as fraction and y intercept as coordinates from the equation by comparing with
y=mx+c

Y = mx +c

1 1
y x2 m and 0, 2 as c 2.
3 3

Step 2. (We need two points to graph a line)

Plot the y intercept as the first point.

1 Rise
Use the slope m = to locate the second point. Rise 1 unit from the first point plotted then run
3 Run
3 units to the right, mark the second point. Join these points to get the graph.
a) y 3x 4
