Structural Appraisal - Introduction

Although Engineers carry out the detailed structural design, it is very important that
Architects and other non-engineering professionals have the knowledge and ability at the
conceptual design stage of a project, to be able to make decisions on the type of structure,
choice of material and approximate size of structural members.

The intention of this element of Module U33524 is to build on the basic material &
structural design knowledge gain so far on the course, and develop your ability to
understand and describe the structural aspects of building design.

This will be achieved through Structural Appraisal lectures and their application to your
chosen Case Study Building.

The key elements required in a Structural Appraisal are shown below and will be covered
in the lectures:

1) Describing How Structures Behave

2) Factors Affecting the Choice of Structural Design Solution

3) Structural Sizing - "Rules of Thumb"

4) Communicating Structure

5) Structural Appraisal for Case Study Building
