INTRODUCTION

According to Daniel Nation (2017), social media are the web-

based communication tools that enable people to interact with each

other by both sharing and consuming information. Since our

technology has begun to prosper, the use of social media such as

Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram has become prevalent to our society

nowadays. According to Statista (2017), it is estimated that there will be

around 2.46 billion social media users by the end of 2017 from 2.28

billion social media users in 2016.

According to Kallas (2017), the top 5 most popular social

networking sites as of August 2017 are, Facebook, YouTube,

Instagram, Twitter, and Reddit. These are the social networking sites

that make it easy for a lot of people to connect and share information to

their family and friends online. S

E
N
According to the recent study of Pew Research Center (2015), I
O
young adults or so what they are known today as millennials who are R

H
born from year 1990s or the generation which includes the current
I
G
students today, have consistently been the heaviest users of social H

media because 90% of them use social media. In addition, according to S

C
Opera mini (2015), with the unstoppable adoption of smartphones, H
O
O
people are spending more time accessing the Web on their mobile L
BATASAN HILLS NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 2

devices. The smartphone adoption rate in this country has

grown from 41 percent to 55 percent over the past year. Furthermore,

according to a new study of University of Nebraska-Lincoln, students

check their phones and other digital devices in class 11 more times a

day in average. In addition, its not just a quick glance to see if

someones trying to reach them. Students in the study estimated that,

on average, they spent 20 percent of their classroom time using digital

devices for activities unrelated to classmostly text messaging but also

emailing, web-surfing, checking social media and even playing games.

Another study that was conducted by Jacobsen and Renata

(2011) stated that the use of electronic devices is negatively associated

with grades. They also found out that about two-thirds of the students

were reported using electronic devices while in class, studying, or doing

homework. This multitasking likely increased distraction, something

prior research has shown to be detrimental to student performance. N

A. OBJECTIVES

Since our technology has begun to prosper, the use of social

media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram has become prevalent

to our society nowadays.

Therefore, the main objective of this study is:

To determine the effects of social media to the academic performance

of grade 11 ABM students.

Specifically, the study aims to:

1) To determine what social networking sites that students often

use.

2) To ascertain if social media have positive, negative or it doesnt

have an effect to the academic performance of the students.

3) To determine how social media help the students on their

academic performance.
S
E
B. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM N
I
Specifically, this study aims to seek answer to these following O
R
questions:
H
I
1. What are the effects of social media to the academic performance
G
H
of Grade 11- ABM Students?
S
2. What are social networking sites that students often used? C
H
3. Do social media have positive or negative effects to the academic O

performance of the grade 11-ABM students?

4. How do social media help the student to their academic

performance?

C. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

As the researchers determine the effects of social media to the

academic performance of grade 11 students, they need to consider

different topics that are relevant to their study. The following are the

related literature and studies that presents information regarding to the

effects of social media to the academic performance of students.

The study entitled The Correlation Between the Number of

Hours Spent on Social Media and the Academic Performance of the

Students conducted by Abel et al. (2017), stated that the number of

hours spent on social media and the academic performance of the

students has a strong negative correlation, which indicates that as a

S
student spends more time on social media, his/her academic E
N
performance is probably lower than the student who spends lesser time I
O
on social media. R

H
I
On the other hand, social media is like two sides of a coin
G
H
because it has negative and positive side- which was proven by the
S
results from the study of Peter (2015) entitled, Social Media and C
H
Academic Performance of Students in University of Lagos. His study O
O
L
BATASAN HILLS NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 5

stated that though Social media have negative effects on

teenagers such as lack of privacy, distracting students from their

academic work, taking most of their productive time, and such like, it

also has positive effects as well. For instance, students can form online

communities in order to plan for a project, have group discussions

about class material, or use the social networking sites as a way to

keep in contact when a student who has been absent needs to be

updated on current academic information.

It was supported by the study entitled, Impact of Social Media to

Students Academic Performance that was conducted by Zahid Amin et

al., where they found out that social media has a lot of positive effects

to the students because since the students spend most of their time on

these social media sites every day, therefore they have able to share

and generate new ideas and concepts related to their studies and at the
S
same time, they also use these sites for enjoyment or to have fun. In E
N
addition, the researchers found out that through these social websites, I
O
they do their academic work with enjoyment. R

H
Another research by Wang et al. entitled, The Effects of Social I
G
Media on College Students revealed that college students were likely to H

S
be affected by social media. According to them, social media is C
H
attractive, it not only provides college students another world to make O
O
L
BATASAN HILLS NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 6

friends, also provides a good way to release pressure. To some

degrees, it absolutely affects the lives of college students including the

grades. This research also indicates that an approach is needed to

better balance the relationship between social media and academic

study. Thus, the college students should think more about the balance

of social media and academics.

Furthermore, according to the study conducted by Hasnain et al.

(2015) stated that if social media is used in positive manner, it can help

the students and youth in gaining knowledge that can be used to

enhance their academic performance.

However, some researches also considered the personality traits

of the students as a factor that affects the usage of social media with

regards to the academic performance of the students like the one

that was conducted by Rouis et al. (2011). The researchers

S
investigate how Facebook usage affects the academic performance of E
N
students with different personality traits and they have found out I
O
that Facebook has strong negative impact on academic performance R

H
of extrovert students. However, factor or self-regulation among I
G
students greatly reduces this negative impact as they have high level H

S
of effective self-control while using these social media platforms. C

D. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Students, teachers, and the parents will be the beneficiaries in

this study. With this study, students will know the influence of social

media to their academic performance. As for the teachers, the teachers

can teach their students more effectively on how to balance their time

on social media and to handle more efficient and insure the

effectiveness of their students on their academics. Lastly, the parents

are also beneficiary of this study because they will be aware on the

effects of social media that might affect the academic performance of

their son/s or daughter/s.

The researchers medium for the research in descriptive

research. This method is considered appropriate and suitable because it

enables the researchers to gather data through the standardized

procedure based on the research instrument to know and study the

concepts and related variables of students when it comes to the social

media life of students. The researchers used the descriptive research to

know what the trends are now, condition of using social media and the

cause and effect that the researcher thinks as an accurate interpretation

with or without the aid of statistical treatment. The instrument that was

used by the researcher was a self-made questionnaire to gather

information that the researcher need from the selected 50 students. The

questionnaire was drawn out based on the researchers observation. In

this study, questionnaires were used to obtain data relevant to the

studys objective and research questions. The purpose of this study is to

premised on several researches that are taken from the related

literature.

B. Population and locale

The respondents of this study came from the Grade-11 ABM

students of Batasan Hills National High School. A total number of 50

students were randomly selected using the sampling method to gather

random samples from the answers of the given 50 students.

C. Data Gathering Procedure

So, the first step that the researcher made was to make a request

latter or get a permit so that theyll be able to start the data gathering.

After the first step, they can now start data gathering from the

researchers selected respondents. But before they come up to something

else they have to introduce themselves to their respondents then make

Discussion

A. Conclusion

The researchers are able to know the effects of social

media to the academic performances of students especially

Grade-11 ABM students. Most of the ABM students stated that

social media is a big help for their academic performances based

on the table shown. The objective of this study is to contribute

data to the students that can guide them to use social media as a

tool to be a more active student in class and to use social media

in a positive way.

After conducting this study, the researchers concluded

that the effects of social media to the academic performance of

Grade-11 ABM students are positive.

This will give opportunities to students that social media S

E
will find ways to help them students to better use social media in N
I
a very good manner and in a positive way. O
R
Despite of the advantages of social media to the students,
H
I
there are also disadvantages of social media based on the data G
H
gathered. And there will still be a threat to everyone that some
S
students will use social media unwisely and lead them and turn C
H
O
them into bad people.
O
L
BATASAN HILLS NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 18

In order to use social media wisely, the students should

have to think wisely first before making the move in using the

social media. They must first know the outcome of their move for

them to avoid using social media in a negative way.

B. Recommendation

This study will help the future researchers, students and

everyone to use social media positively. Also, this research has its

own gaps that the next researchers have to fill. We recommend

the future researcher to:

A. Study the perspective of students in using social media

B. Identify the pros and cons of having the social media to the life

of students.

C. Dont focus on only one track. Use all tracks as your
