What are the four steps in the

problem-solving process?

In which step would you draw

pictures, use a variable and choose
helpful names for variables or
unknowns, solve a simpler version
of the problem, use trial and error,
look for a pattern or patterns, or
make a list?
In which step would you learn the
necessary underlying mathematical
concepts, consider the terminology
and notation used in the problem,
rephrase the problem in your own
words, and write down specific
examples of the conditions given in
the problem?
What questions would be helpful
to ask yourself while you
understand the problem?

In which step do you write the
equation?
In which step do you look back and

ACTIVITY: WRITE AND SOLVE A SYSTEM OF
LINEAR EQUATIONS
In this activity, you will use the four-step problem-solving process to write and solve a system of linear
equations algebraically. Use the space provided to show all work.

Then, you will go to Desmos to graph the solution for this linear equation. Be sure to take a screen shot
of your graph and print a copy to turn in along with this activity. After, you will reflect on the steps for
the problem you chose to answer questions about similar types of problems.

CHOOSE ONE OF THE PROBLEMS FROM THE FOLLOWING BELOW:

- Find the value of two numbers if their sum is 12 and their difference is 4. (Missing Integers)

- The state fair is a popular field trip destination. This year the senior class at High School A
and the senior class at High School B both planned trips there. The senior class at High
School A rented and filled 8 vans and 8 buses with 240 students. High School B rented and
filled 4 vans and 1 bus with 54 students. Every van had the same number of students in it as
did the buses. Find the number of students in each van and in each bus. (Missing quantity)

- Brenda's school is selling tickets to a spring musical. On the first day of ticket sales the
school sold 3 senior citizen tickets and 9 child tickets for a total of $75. The school took in
$67 on the second day by selling 8 senior citizen tickets and 5 child tickets. What is the price
each of one senior citizen ticket and one child ticket? (Missing cost)

Questions:

1. Your question is categorized at the end of the problem in parenthesis. What type of problem did
you solve?

2. Based on the category, what other types of questions could you solve using the same thought
process and steps for the problem you solved for?

3. Give an example of a similar word problem that will have two solutions. (Hint: Work backwards.
Have the answers and then write out the problem but omit either the integers, quantity, or
cost.)
