Weld Failures: Small errors big problems

Matthew Bell
P.Eng

ABSTRACT
Welding can be a routine activity in many workplaces. However, small errors made early in the
process can lead to big problems in service. Sometimes solving one problem can introduce other
problems. Design considerations, service considerations, weld preparation, and operation in
service are all key factors. The presentation will introduce a few illustrative failures about how
overlooking small details resulted in unreliable welds.
