performance of the bit compared with the well program. In a well

drilling efficiencies are compared against the program estimates.

Engineered Bit Programs

With our extensive bit record database, we create engineered bit
programs specifically designed to meet your drilling objectives.
We can select the right bit based on formation strength analysis,
formation abrasiveness, bit hydraulics, directional concerns and
rig capabilities. With our vast knowledge of Tricone and fixed
cutter bits, we offer an unbiased approach in designing bit
programs with the proper match of bit selection to application
need. All of this information helps you make the right decision for
your specific project.

Global Bit Record System

We have the petroleum industry's first online and fully integrated
global bit record system. After converting all our paper records,
we have maintained an electronic database since 1984. Currently
there are more than 500,000 bit records in our repository. From
planning a wildcat in an unproven territory to improving the drilling
efficiency in a mature field, our bit records are helping customers
make the right decisions.

Baker Hughes Experimental Test Area

Hughes Christensen's parent company, Baker Hughes, has a field
research facility located south of Tulsa. This site expedites the
development and commercialization of drilling systems for the
industry.

The Baker Hughes Experimental Test Area (BETA) provides a

major bridge between simulator testing and full-scale field
applications of downhole tools. Testing at BETA enables us to
evaluate systems without the costs and constraints associated
with a well drilled for production.

This one-of-a-kind facility is equipped with the latest, most

sophisticated real-time data acquisition system in the world. This
system enables our engineers to monitor virtually every variable
and also allows digital analysis of frequency-based and time-
based data.

Materials Research
We continuously improve the durability and overall performance of
roller cone and fixed cutter drill bits. From the industry's most
durable hardfacing to improved tungsten carbide matrix and
diamond components, our materials research activities have
resulted in record-setting performances worldwide.

The highly complex system of moving parts within a roller cone bit
requires our materials researchers to follow a synergistic approach
in which each component is evaluated in the context of its
relationship to other system's components. This methodology
enhances the probability that performance-limiting deficiencies are
correctly identified and addressed. This work has enabled us to
introduce improved greases, bearings and seals and to develop
improved diamond and carbide components that make our steel
tooth and TCI product lines achieve consistent, unparalleled
results.

Our analytical tools, including acoustic, electron and optical

microscopy are used for phase and fracture-surface studies.
Profilometry documents the effects of wear on bearing and seal
surfaces. We continuously monitor the material strength and
fracture toughness of our materials to deliver the products that
lower your cost-per-foot drilled.

Product Evaluation Lab

Our emphasis on continuous improvement is reflected in our
Product Evaluation Lab. We diagnose product wear and failure
modes to determine the causes for the various conditions and to
identify opportunities for performance-enhancing features. In the
lab, we literally autopsy bits that have been returned from fields
worldwide. Our engineers perform in-depth failure analysis of the
cutting structures, bearings, seals and other areas on all types of
bits. This post-mortem analysis gives us the information to help
you optimize drilling practices and conditions. By analyzing
experimental products, we are able to quickly determine the value
of new design features and if modifications are warranted to
further improve future performance. All of this work delivers the
most economical bit performance and eliminates recurrence of
performance problems in future wells.

Drilling Technology Laboratory

Many of Hughes Christensen's advances in improving penetration
rate and fine-tuning performance features of Tricone and diamond
drill bits are implemented at our high-pressure drilling test facility.
With our full-scale drilling simulator, where we bring the field to
the laboratory, the research and development cycle that once took
months in the field has been reduced to days. The drilling
simulator, which is capable of testing bits up to 12 1/4 in
diameter, reproduces the downhole environment to enable our
researchers to accurately assess and compare the performance of
new designs, as well as standard products. Drilling parameters
including weight on bit, rotary speed, rate of penetration and bit
hydraulicsare computer controlled throughout the individual
tests. After each test, the bit, borehole and bottomhole pattern
can be examined immediately to ascertain characteristics of the
test bit, providing information that would be impractical to obtain
in the field.

Complementing the high-pressure drilling simulator is the full-

scale atmospheric pressure test facility for conducting wear
studies, steerability analyses, visualization tests and dynamic
analyses of all types of full-size drill bits.

Additional test equipment includes

? two boring mills for extended wear testing of cutting elements
? a visual single-point cutter machine to closely examine cutter
and rock interactions under pressurized conditions
? a rock lathe to demonstrate retention of cutter wear
characteristics through repeated bit repair cycles
? an erosion tester to characterize PDC matrix material resistance
to erosion
? a torsion machine for testing yield torque of various
components and materials.

conventional TCI/ND gauge. Box-Up Connection (Y)
Some directional drilling applications utilizing
turbines require the smallest possible distance
between the bit face and the lower bearing
stabilizer. This can be achieved by using a pin-
down connection on the turbine.

Spiral Gauge (G6)

Maximizes borehole coverage for enhanced
stability. The spiral gauge option is one of many
chordal drop management tools that reduces
vibration severity.

BRUTE Inserts On Gauge (G10)

Patented BRUTE inserts enhance stability, reduce
vibration and protect the gauge cutters.

TSP Diamond Gauge (G7)

Thermally stable polycrystalline (TSP) diamonds
offer our highest abrasion resistance for
maximum gauge-holding.

BRUTE Cone Inserts (XC)

BRUTE inserts reduce the wear of the EZSteer
bearing surface when drilling abrasive
formations.

Longer Gauge Than Standard (G8)

The G8 option is any gauge length that is longer
than the standard gauge length for a given bit
size. In some high-rotation speed applications,
such as when using turbines, maximum bit
stabilization and durability are required.
Therefore, gauge length is increased to meet
specific application requirements.
