Reflection Banksy lesson - 27/09/2017

The lesson was overall a real success; students understood and with reasonable efficiency could
apply the primary conceptual complexities that were introduced and discussed. There was a
cohesive momentum through each transition from one realm of thought/activity to the next, and
the knowledge attended to within the lesson fell into a nice continuum of thinking for the students.
Essentially as a learning group we moved from a globalised and convoluted view of social action and
its relevant considerations, down to a fine-grained and localised connection to those global contexts.
Accomplishing this was no mean feat on behalf of the students. The work was certainly challenging
and in parts maybe even reaching for most comprehension levels, students and teachers alike. One
challenge for me in the mechanics of the lesson was that at classes beginning I had two students, by
the end of the first hour I had nine, so the effort it tool to maintain a learning environment with the
recurring rupture of late arrivals was difficult, but I feel confident I managed to assuage any major
disruption, while simultaneously bringing latecomers up to speed so they could join in on the
learning that was taking place. This challenge highlighted the importance of keeping mobile in the
classroom and not sectioning oneself off and stagnating in some corner of the room, which is
something I am not horrible at, but I will work on further next time. Also, trying to give equal time
and attention to all students and not becoming fixed on those who are likely to be off-task. Lastly, as
aa reflection on this lesson, my effort to empower students around questioning Is beginning to show
progress, although it is well short of my ideal; but, students are beginning to feel confident
questioning the things I have said, and they have begun using questions in class as more than merely
as means-ends answer device which is my hope to construct a classroom culture of inquiry and
curiosity.
