Lesson Reflective Summary

Teacher Candidate for Science Endorsement: Jiann Yi Liu (Jenny)

Instructor: Dawn Hudson

School: Norton Park Elementary School Grade: Third Grade

Lesson Topic: Rocks and Minerals (Second Lesson-mystery rocks)

Write a brief summary of your experiences teaching this lesson, addressing the following
questions:

What went well? What did not go well? (Cite specific examples)
In this lesson, students had to guess what physical attributes the other person
decided to use to sort the rock.
What went well: The students did not make the correct guess at the beginning of
the lesson. But after several tries, most people were able to guess the physical
attribute they other person picked.
What did not go well: At the beginning of the lesson, the students were having a
hard time guessing and came out with the physical attributes the other person
was using.

How well were the lessons student performance objectives attained?

The lesson objective-whats the difference between rocks and minerals were met
with around 90% of accuracy toward the end of the lesson. The instructor had to
stop the lesson to review all the physical attributes with the class again in order
for students to successfully finish the rock sorting activity.

Did classroom activity center on science understanding, inquiry, and sense-

making by all students?
The classroom activity as centered around science understanding, inquiry, and
sense-making by all students. The students were engaged with the activity. They
had discussion among peers. Since the activity was very hands on, students had
to observe, touch the texture, and made judgement based on what they were
looking on the sorting mate.
Did your scientific content knowledge enable you to support students
construction of knowledge and understanding of important scientific concepts
and processes?
Yes, my scientific content knowledge enable me to support students
construction of knowledge and understanding of important scientific concepts
and processes. Before the lesson, I reviewed the background knowledge on
rocks and minerals. Also I reviewed the misconception on rocks and minerals.

When you have the opportunity to re-teach this lesson, what will you do
differently (strategies, teaching tools, assessments, etc.) to improve student
learning for all students?

When I have the chance to re-teach this lesson, I would put index cards with the
physical attributes on it. So the students who were in trouble making the sorting or
guess the sorting would have help to decide which physical attribute to pick, or guess
what physical attribute the other person was using.
