1 [5] Spring 2017 Hydraulics Dr. Mohammad N. Almasri [5] Pumps

Example
Determine the power required to li, 0.2 m3/s of water
from a lower reservoir with a water surface eleva9on of
100 m to an upper reservoir with an eleva9on of 200 m

The pump has an eciency of 0.88

The intake line to the pump is 50 m of 305-mm diameter

pipe and the discharge line is 600 m of a 254-mm
diameter pipe. Both lines have a fric9on factor (f) of 0.02

The pump is at an eleva9on of 104 m

Example

4 [5] Spring 2017 Hydraulics Dr. Mohammad N. Almasri [5] Pumps

Example

Determine the pressure at the inlet and discharge

sides of the pump. Consider an entrance loss
coecient of 0.8, a bend loss coecient of 0.5 in the
inlet line, and an exit loss coecient of 1.0 at the
upper reservoir

Example

7 [5] Spring 2017 Hydraulics Dr. Mohammad N. Almasri [5] Pumps

Example

If the atmospheric pressure is 95.5 kN/m2 and the

vapor pressure of the water is 2.3 kN/m2, determine
the net posi9ve suc9on head (NPSH) for the pump

8 [5] Spring 2017 Hydraulics Dr. Mohammad N. Almasri [5] Pumps

Example

9 [5] Spring 2017 Hydraulics Dr. Mohammad N. Almasri [5] Pumps

Example

Water (10C) is
owing at a rate
of 0.35 m3/s and
it is assumed that
hL = 2V2/2g from
the reservoir to
the gage, where V
is the velocity in
the 30-cm pipe.
What power must
the pump supply?

Example

11 [5] Spring 2017 Hydraulics Dr. Mohammad N. Almasri [5] Pumps

Example

A pump is installed in the pipeline between the two

reservoirs shown in the gure

If the head added by the pump is 50 , determine the

ow rate in the pipeline

Neglect minor losses

Example

13 [5] Spring 2017 Hydraulics Dr. Mohammad N. Almasri [5] Pumps

Example

Write the energy equa9on between A and B

Ep + ZA = hL + ZB

hL = 50 + 300 250 = 100 ,

hL = f (L/D)(V2/2g)
hL=[0.02][(4,50012)/10][V2/(29.81/0.3048)] = 100 ,

V = 7.72 ,/s
Q = A V = 0.5457.72 = 4.2 ,3/s
