Effluent Treatment Plant Philosophy

1. Method of treating wastewater :

- Biological method : the principal are carbonaceous organic material representing in BOD
removal, nitrification, denitrification and stabilization, and phosphorus removal
Aerobic

Biological

Anaerobic
The comparison between aerobic and anaerobic
Feature Aerobic Anaerobic
Organic removal efficiency High High
Effluent quality Excellent Moderate poor
Organic loading rate Moderate High
Sludge production High Low
Nutrient requirement High Low
Alkalinity requirement Low High for certain waste
Energy requirement High Low moderate
Temperature sensitivity Low High
Start up time 2 4 weeks 2 4 months
Odor Less odor Potential odor
Bio energy recovery No Yes
Mode of treatment total Essential Pretreatment

- Chemical method : this treatment can be used to removing substance through :

1. Producing insoluble solid & gas
2. Producing coagulation of a colloidal suspension
3. Producing biological degradable substance from non biodegradable
4. Destroying or deactivating chelating agents
5. Producing non objectionable substance that can be removed easily
- Physical treatment : this treatment accomplish removal of substances by use of naturally
occurring process, such as gravity, electrical attraction and van der wall forces. This method
includes sedimentation, flocculation and adsorption
Main goal of design of Industrial Waste Water Treatment is to minimize the volume and toxicity abd
the final effluent residue, since final disposal can incur significant cost and liability

Selecting treatment for industrial waste :

1. Analysis of manufacturing process
2. Pollution prevention program
3. Waste characterization study
4. Determine effluent limitation
5. Treatment objectives determination
6. Selection of candidate technologies
7. Alternatives and pilot scale
8. Preliminary design of alternatives
9. Analysis economic of alternatives
10. Select process and find design
