Tarpana is an act of offering to satisfy Gods,Sages and Ancestral manes. This video demonstrates
performing Deva Rishi and Pitru TARPANA in an easy and simple method.

Who can perform?

Anyone who wanted to appease deva, rishi and pitris can perform. No bar of caste, creed and sex.

Pitrus are our departed ancestors, irrespective of whether any of ones parents and other relations
are alive or not pitru tarpanas can be done.

Best time/days for performing Pitru tarpanas?

Ideally Every Day

Solar and Lunar Eclipses


Mahalaya Pakshas
Makara Sankramana
Mesha Sankramana
Kataka Samkramana
Tula Sankramana
When Vyatipata yoga occurs
On Akshya Tritiya
On the Month of Kartika
On 12 lunar day with Sravana Nakshatra
On all Masa Sankramana days (Day of the Sun transit to other zodiac sign)
During Pushkaras for Rivers

Exceptions-

There are some restrictions. Tarpana with water containing sesame seeds (which is needed for pitris)
should not be performed:

(1) On a Sunday that has saptami tithi (7th day of the lunar fortnight), (2) on a Friday that has a
nanda tithi (1st, 6th and 11th tithis of the lunar fortnights), (3) on a Sunday with Moon in Bharani,
Krittika or Magha nakshatra, and, (4) on ones birthday.

On these days, tarpanas not requiring water with sesame seed can be performed, but not the ones
requiring water with sesame seeds

Materials required-

Water pot, Plate/bowl to collect water, darbha twigs, pavitram, sesame seeds, akshatas,
panchapatra (tumbler and a spoon for sipping water)

Setup-

Keep a water pot and a plate or bowl to collect water in front of you. Put akshatas in water pot,
Place drabha twigs in water collecting plate/bowl.

Procedure-

Pray to Maha Ganapati for removing obstacles in this ritual.

Do Aachamana-

Wear a ring made up of darbhas on your right hand ring finger. If you do not get it please proceed
without it.

Pranayamam

Choose either a regular style of inhaling retraining and exhaling of air or a Vedic style of breathing
while reciting the mantras

Sankalpam-

Sit facing east comfortably, take askshtas in right hand and place on your left palm by closing right
palm. Take a vow by reciting the following mantra

Deva Tarpana
Hold the water pot on the right hand palm, cover it with the left hand palm and say the following to
request the presence of Devas and Rishis in the water pot.

Pour some water into the open right palm; ensure releasing the water into the plate through the tips
of your fingers as shown in Picture marked as 1 while reciting the following mantras

Rishi Tarpana
Continue facing east direction. Pour some water into the open right palm; ensure releasing the
water into the plate through the base of your little finger as shown in Picture marked as 2 while
reciting the following mantras

Pitru Tarpana
Sit facing south preferably. If you are wearing the sacred thread, change it to reverse. Fill the pot
with sufficient water and add some black sesame seeds to it,

Please note that 3 offerings are made to 3 generations of maternal and paternal ancestors, while
only one offering is made to others.

These mantras are applicable to all, irrespective of whether any ones parents and other relations
are alive or not.

Now recite the following mantra

Pour some water into the open right palm; ensure releasing the water into the plate through the
base of your index finger as shown in Picture marked as 3 while reciting the following mantras
Aum Sri Maha Ganadhipataye namaha Aum Sri Gurubhyo namah Aum Sri Rrshibhyo namah

Surrender the doer ship

Wear back the sacred thread in normal way. Sit facing the east direction. Surrender the doer ship to
Lord Krishna.

Say the following mantra

YaavadhbhUmaNDale Sanaatanadharmo vardhatu
