KATIE ADULT DAY CENTER POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

SUBJECT: Medication Policy


Reference: 9555.9710, subpart 3; 9555.9680, subpart 2

POLICY: Medications may be self-administered, if appropriate, or administered
by a trained staff person during center hours.
PROCEDURE:
1. The RN Consultant is responsible for:
o Developing policies and monitoring procedures for participant self-
administration of medications and for training unlicensed personnel who provide
medication assistance; and

o Supervising staff distribution of medication and assistance with participant self-


administration of medication and ensuring compliance with 9555.9680, subpart
2, item C, which states: an employee, other than a physician, registered
pharmacist, RN, or LPN, who is responsible for medication assistance shall
provide a certificate verifying successful completion of a trained medication aid
program for unlicensed personnel approved by the MDH or shall be trained by a
RN to provide medication assistance in accordance with service and program
requirements.

2. Self-Administration of Medication:
o A statement from the participants physician stating that the participant is
capable of self-administration of medication is received at admission or at such
time that the participant is deemed capable.

o All medications brought into the center, including non-prescription medications


will be labeled and stored in a locked cabinet/drawer and will be made available
to the participant on request, or will be maintained on the participants person.

3. Administration of medications to participants who have not been deemed capable of


self-administration of medication or have not received a statement from their physician
indicating their capability to self-administer medications will have administration of
medication by staff while at the center. Medications will only be administered when it is
most beneficial to that participant to have medication administered during hours that
the participant is scheduled to attend the center.

4. All staff, other than a licensed physician, registered pharmacist, registered nurse, or licensed
practical nurse that is responsible for medication assistance, shall have completion of medication
training for unlicensed staff, or training from the RN Consultant.

o Medication assistance includes responsibilities for supervising participants self-


administration of medication, distributing medication to participants, and monitoring
the effects of the medication.

5. All medications being administered by medication trained staff must be in a properly labeled
pharmacy container and/or in a sealed and labeled container transported to the program directly
from the primary caregiver. Expired medication will not be given.

6. The participant or caregiver will be responsible to provide the center with the currently
prescribed medication, which includes current direction for use. The centers staff will inform
participant or caregiver when medication supply is low.

7. The participant or caregiver will be responsible to notify the centers staff of any medication
change as it occurs.

8. All staff meeting administration of medication requirements as stated in Medication Policy of the
center will record on an individual medication record in the participants chart.

9. Non-prescription medication may be administered under the guidelines written in Medication


Policy.
