A Message From Your President

Greetings Friends and Supporters of Tampa Audubon! I have made the difficult decision to step down as your
President. As you will see below, I find myself overextended and with a three-year-old at home, I need to focus
more on family responsibilities. I plan to remain active on the Board as Treasurer. Your Board is seeking new
leadership and I hope you will seriously consider this opportunity. We recently held our annual elections and
your new Board of Directors is ready to serve for the 2006-2007 season.

I thought I would use this space to introduce you to your Board. Not only are our Board members leaders in
Tampa Audubon, they are leaders in the community and beyond as well.

Karl Stevens, our 1st VP, is not only a past President of Tampa Audubon, but also currently serves as President
of the International Institute for Supply Management, President of the Tampa Bay Catholic Lawyers Guild, and
Chairman of the Radio Station WBVM Board.

Ann Paul, our Immediate Past President, is Preserve Manager for Audubon’s Coastal Islands Sanctuaries. Ann
is a leader in the community and is involved in numerous environmental organizations throughout the state such
as the Citizens Environmental Advisory Committee for the Environmental Protection Commission (appointed
by Commissioner Kathy Castor); Agency on Bay Management, Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council; Florida
Institute of Phosphate Research, appointed by Governor Jeb Bush; Mosaic Fertilizer, LLC, Citizens’ Advisory
Committee; Mosaic Fertilizer, LLC, Environmental Education Center Committee; Beach-nesting Bird Protec-
tion Committee and Hillsborough County’s Environmental Lands and Acquisition Program Advisory Commit-
tee, Parks, Recreation, and Conservation Department

Rob Heath, Director, is married and has three kids aged 12, 15, and 23. He is currently working for National
Audubon as a seasonal roseate spoonbill technician, banding spoonbill chicks at two of the nesting colonies
managed by the Tampa Bay Sanctuaries office. Rob also serves as a board member of the Tampa Bay Conser-
vancy, and is the founding board member and President of Wildlife Fellowship, an organization which provides
support for the protection and management of publicly owned preservation lands in the Tampa Bay region.

A Fond Farewell
TAS Display Contest! By Stanley Kroh

Tampa Audubon says farewell to two of our shining stars

this month- Sabina Espinet-Todd and Andrea College

Sabina is relocating to Evergreen, Colorado on

August 5 and we will miss her dearly. Sabina has served
tirelessly as both Avocet editor and web master. For those
of you have been with Tampa Audubon for a while, I’m
sure you know what I’m saying when I say the Avocet and
our web site are light years ahead of what they were previ-
ously. Sabina guided us through the transition to an elec-
tronic newsletter which has allowed us to go to a full color,
expanded format; while at the same time reducing paper and

distance editor and web master!

And from the “when it rains, it pours department”,

August 12th marks Andrea College’s last day as Director of
the ARC. Andrea took over the ARC after Marilyn Kersh-
ner and Al Tweedy moved to Micanopy. Not only was the
transition seamless, but Andrea brought a fresh new vision
and came up with very creative ways to update some very
tired displays. She also organized two very successful com-
munity events- one in October and the other in May. Both
events drew crowds of more than 500 and introduced Tampa
Audubon to a new audience in a fun and exciting way. An-
drea recently accepted a position with Hillsborough County
as a Land Use Hearing Master. Between her new job
responsibilities and two young daughters, she can no longer
devote as many hours to Tampa Audubon. Andrea leaves
behind a dynamic and motivated group of volunteers ready
to continue our education programs at Lettuce Lake Park.

Good Bye Andrea and Sabina! Thanks for your hard

work and dedication.

Volunteers Needed: Backyard Habitat Campaign

The Tampa Audubon Board is planning a new Backyard Habitat
Campaign for the coming year. The goal is to increase awareness
about the importance of backyard wildlife habitat. Even if you live
in an apartment, there are steps you can take to benefit wildlife. We
are looking for volunteers to help with this initiative and for one
very special volunteer to head up this important campaign. If you
are interested or would like to learn more, please contact Stanley
Kroh at 228-4257.
