LESSON PLAN

Subject: Social Studies Grade: 1 Date: March 29, 2017

Lesson: What was school like in the past? Time: 50 minutes

Materials:
- Straws
- Feathers
- Past and Present booklet
- Time Machine
- Old School Bell
- Old uniform
- School of the Past Book
- Paper
- Pictures of school life in the past

Preparation:

- Make quills
- Make past and present booklet
Adaptations:

No adaptations encourage student participation

Lesson Procedure:
1) Read 3 chapters of Junie B. Jones for storytime
2) Review concepts of Past and Present with concept cards.
a. What is the past?
b. What is the present?
3) Introduce that today we will be looking how schools have changed from
the past to the present.
4) Review School in the Past Prezi with students.
5) Discuss how school is different today versus in the past.
a. What do you think school was like?
b. Do you think children were happy?
c. What would you miss most about school if you lived in the past?

6) Bring out Time Machine, inside is an old school bell, old uniform, quills,
and paper, books, bell, dunce cap. Discuss how each of the things
represent school in the past.
a. Have student be dunce
b. Ring bell
c. Read portion of Fun With Dick and Jane

7) Instruct students that they will now try to write with quills. Students will be
instructed to write their first and last name.
a. Debrief: What was it like to write with the quill? What did you feel?

8) Students will then work on Past and Present book. Students will fill out
quill page. Discuss with students write with today. Brainstorm on board.
Students will draw picture and then sound out word.

Assessment:

Formative Assessment: Assess for understanding that school was different in the
past versus today. What connections can students make?
