CATEGORY DEFINITION
Literacy An umbrella term, focused on competency and knowledge specific to reading and writing, used to identify
characteristics of content that was inclusive of both reading and writing skills (such as spelling and vocabulary) that
was not specific to one particular academic area.
Reading Disaggregated from Literacy due to articles specifying the content relating to reading (i.e., word study, reading
skills, morphology, etc.).
Writing Disaggregated from Literacy due to articles specifying content relating only to writing (i.e., writing skills, writing
strategies, etc.).
Math Inclusive to themes specifically related to math content.
Other Academic With reference to academic areas that were specifically identified as a single content area of focus in journal articles
(i.e., science, social studies).
Multiple Academic More than one academic area in addition to math and/or literacy
Non-Academic Inclusive of emotional, behavioral, social, and socio-behavioral characteristics of participants that are not specific to
academic areas.
ID Processes Identification and eligibility research.
Services Research that discussed supplementary services including: strategies, interventions, modes of instruction, and so forth
that were provided to participants in studies.
Psychometrics Measurement tools (i.e., assessments), data-based decisions, and other predictors of growth and/or performance
abilities.
Deficit Area Specific disabilities and/or deficit areas focused on in relation to a study or article topic and that were identified as
influencing academic progress.
Theory Methodology, framework, type of research design, fidelity and reliability of studies in relation to their use in studies
conducted and reported on within the articles.
Other Alternate areas of interest that were not covered by any of the other categories (i.e., demographics, parenting style,
relationships, outcomes, etc.).
